Book Human Vitality and Efficiency Under Prolonged Restricted Diet Classic Reprint

Download or read book Human Vitality and Efficiency Under Prolonged Restricted Diet Classic Reprint written by Francis Gano Benedict and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-07 with total page 746 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Human Vitality and Efficiency Under Prolonged Restricted Diet It has not been the custom of the Nutrition Laboratory to direct its researches primarily for economic and sociological purposes; yet in View of its long-continued study of people with a low intake of food and conceivably low metabolism, and the not remote possibility that America might be obliged to undergo privations similar to those in Germany, although probably in less degree, it seemed eminently fitting for the Laboratory to study a question so important from the stand points of patriotism, economy, and physiology, as the effect upon the metabolism of a reduction in diet. The extensive research which is reported in this publication is, in the last analysis, a furthering of the initial problem studied by the Nutrition Laboratory, i. E., a search for conditions resulting in subnormal metabolism. It was planned in detail in the spring of 1917 and carried out during the winter of 1917 - 18 with a selected group of normal individuals whose body-weight was lowered as a result of quantitative reductions in their diet. Before giving the details and discussing the results of this research, a general history will be given of the experimental work leading up to the present study, together with brief abstracts and a critique of the work of other investigators on metabolism with a low intake of food. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Vitality, Fasting and Nutrition: A Physiological Study of the Curative Power of Fasting, Together With a New Theory of the Relation of Food to Human Vitality Most certainly, fasting will never become a popular method of cure, for the reason that it involves too much self-denial! It is all very well to live well for a number of years, and then tothinkandfeelwecanavoidtheresultsbytakingapillora powder. That, unfortunately. Is impossible. Nature does not work in that way, but always by gradual proem. As Doctor Keith 80 well remarked, Plea for a Simpler Life, p. A starving doctor would not, I fear. Have as yet a very long career as a fashionable and popular physician in London. That is but too true! About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Eating for Health and Strength Classic Reprint

Download or read book Eating for Health and Strength Classic Reprint written by Bernarr Macfadden and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-22 with total page 292 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Eating for Health and Strength We want our lives to count for something. Failure is, to a certain extent, a disgrace. And to live the life of achievement you need energy, enthusiasm, ambition. You must have strength, vitality, endurance. And the buoyant spirits that' make play of all work. If all this is valuable, then the power behind the man or the woman, in the form of food, assumes great importance. Day by day our bodies are evolved from the food we eat. We are what we are, because of food. We are hardy, vigorous and capable or devitalized and incompetent, depending largely upon the quality of nourishment that we furnish ourselves day by day. There never was a time in the history of the world when the human diet was worse than it is at the present day. Book The Adult Learner

Download or read book The Adult Learner written by Malcolm S. Knowles and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2020-12-20 with total page 407 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How do you tailor education to the learning needs of adults? Do they learn differently from children? How does their life experience inform their learning processes? These were the questions at the heart of Malcolm Knowles’ pioneering theory of andragogy which transformed education theory in the 1970s. The resulting principles of a self-directed, experiential, problem-centred approach to learning have been hugely influential and are still the basis of the learning practices we use today. Understanding these principles is the cornerstone of increasing motivation and enabling adult learners to achieve. The 9th edition of The Adult Learner has been revised to include: Updates to the book to reflect the very latest advancements in the field. The addition of two new chapters on diversity and inclusion in adult learning, and andragogy and the online adult learner. An updated supporting website. This website for the 9th edition of The Adult Learner will provide basic instructor aids including a PowerPoint presentation for each chapter. Revisions throughout to make it more readable and relevant to your practices. If you are a researcher, practitioner, or student in education, an adult learning practitioner, training manager, or involved in human resource development, this is the definitive book in adult learning you should not be without.

Book Democracy and Education

Download or read book Democracy and Education written by John Dewey and published by Createspace Independent Publishing Platform. This book was released on 1916 with total page 456 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: . Renewal of Life by Transmission. The most notable distinction between living and inanimate things is that the former maintain themselves by renewal. A stone when struck resists. If its resistance is greater than the force of the blow struck, it remains outwardly unchanged. Otherwise, it is shattered into smaller bits. Never does the stone attempt to react in such a way that it may maintain itself against the blow, much less so as to render the blow a contributing factor to its own continued action. While the living thing may easily be crushed by superior force, it none the less tries to turn the energies which act upon it into means of its own further existence. If it cannot do so, it does not just split into smaller pieces (at least in the higher forms of life), but loses its identity as a living thing. As long as it endures, it struggles to use surrounding energies in its own behalf. It uses light, air, moisture, and the material of soil. To say that it uses them is to say that it turns them into means of its own conservation. As long as it is growing, the energy it expends in thus turning the environment to account is more than compensated for by the return it gets: it grows. Understanding the word "control" in this sense, it may be said that a living being is one that subjugates and controls for its own continued activity the energies that would otherwise use it up. Life is a self-renewing process through action upon the environment.
