Book Protecting Children Online

Download or read book Protecting Children Online written by Tijana Milosevic and published by MIT Press. This book was released on 2018-02-02 with total page 297 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A critical examination of efforts by social media companies—including Facebook, Twitter, Snapchat, and Instagram—to rein in cyberbullying by young users. High-profile cyberbullying cases often trigger exaggerated public concern about children's use of social media. Large companies like Facebook respond by pointing to their existing anti-bullying mechanisms or coordinate with nongovernmental organizations to organize anti-cyberbullying efforts. Do these attempts at self-regulation work? In this book, Tijana Milosevic examines the effectiveness of efforts by social media companies—including Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, Snapchat, and Instagram—to rein in cyberbullying by young users. Milosevic analyzes the anti-bullying policies of fourteen major social media companies, as recorded in companies' corporate documents, draws on interviews with company representatives and e-safety experts, and details the roles of nongovernmental organizations examining their ability to provide critical independent advice. She draws attention to lack of transparency in how companies handle bullying cases, emphasizing the need for a continuous independent evaluation of effectiveness of companies' mechanisms, especially from children's perspective. Milosevic argues that cyberbullying should be viewed in the context of children's rights and as part of the larger social problem of the culture of humiliation. Milosevic looks into five digital bullying cases related to suicides, examining the pressures on the social media companies involved, the nature of the public discussion, and subsequent government regulation that did not necessarily address the problem in a way that benefits children. She emphasizes the need not only for protection but also for participation and empowerment—for finding a way to protect the vulnerable while ensuring the child's right to participate in digital spaces.

Download or read book Social Media and Mental Health First Edition written by Joan Swart and published by Cognella Academic Publishing. This book was released on 2018-09-13 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Social Media and Mental Health: Depression, Predators, and Personality Disorders presents case studies and guidelines to help policymakers, parents, educators, and criminal justice experts better understand the negative effects of social media on mental health. The book examines the direct correlations between technology and the onset of significant personality and mood disorders, criminal violence, and other dysfunctional behavior, particularly in American youth. The text addresses cyberbullying, suicide, and the cycle of abuse; Internet addiction and its relation to impaired psychosocial functioning; and the narcissistic tendencies that individuals can develop as a result of too much screen time, including attention-seeking behavior, constant self-promotion, and feelings of entitlement. Chapters are dedicated to the adverse effects of social media on dating and romantic relationships, the concept of online "friends", and the dangerous fantasies that individuals can foster online. The book closes with a timely chapter about radicalization, terrorism, and new media. Scientifically rigorous in nature, Social Media and Mental Health is also an ideal textbook for college-level courses in forensic psychology, social work, juvenile crime, and communications. It can also be used as a guide for educators, employers, and administrators, including law enforcement or corrections officials who work with schools, youth groups, and at-risk populations.

Book Social Media

Download or read book Social Media written by Terence C. Ahern and published by . This book was released on 2017 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over 50 years ago, Pepsi sponsored the UNICEF pavilion at the 1964 New York World's Fair's. They worked with the Walt Disney Company to develop an attraction called the "Children of the World" which boasted a song and included a boat ride that passed by "animated figures frolicking in miniature settings of many lands of the world". This song correctly anticipated the effect communication technology has on how people interact with one another. A line in the song declares that "Though the mountains divide and the oceans are wide / It's a small world after all". Indeed, computer mediated-communication technologies, through cell phones, satellite phones, or the computer-based technologies of Skype or Facetime have trivialised the ability to connect to anyone at anytime, anywhere on the planet. Fast forward 25 years and the software phenomenon known as social media has further compressed not only time and space, but has also democratised news and information. Pundits talk about the 24/7 news cycles where news is available from anyone around the world and from around the clock. This new software has made the local global and the global local.
