Download or read book Dynamics of Human Rights in the US Foreign Policy written by Sanjay Gupta and published by Northern Book Centre. This book was released on 1998 with total page 300 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book revolves around the role of the US federal government in the protection and promotion of human rights at the global level. A comparative analysis of human rights policy of different US Presidencies toward various regions of the world is analysed. The book discusses the broad theoretical perspectives on human rights and goes on to trace the growth and development of human rights in the US foreign policy from the time of American Declaration of Independence of 1776. In particular, it assesses the role of Jimmy Carter and Ronald Reagan in addressing the global human rights issues. Besides, the US policy toward the former Soviet Union, China and Latin America has also been elaborately examined. The US Declaration of Independence of 1776 together with the Bill of Rights of 1791 constitutes the bedrock of US commitment and dedication to human rights. The great American statesmen—Jefferson, Lincoln, Roosevelt and Carter rendered yeomen service to the cause of human rights, both at home and the world at large. However, in practice, the concern for human rights during the successive US administrations has not been consistent as there were occasions when the US gave greater weightage to strategic-military relations and economic considerations than to human rights. Besides, there were instances when the US became a passive collaborator to human rights abuses committed by several of its allies, particularly in Latin America and Asia. Also, there were certain Presidencies as Nixon and Reagan that gave more rhetorical speeches and statements on human rights with little follow-up action. On the whole, the US human rights policy has been active, assertive and dynamic, and its application been region and situation specific.

Download or read book Human Rights written by Arthur V. Carrington and published by Nova Biomedical Books. This book was released on 2000 with total page 450 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: To the consternation of the haves, some humans continue to insist that they are entitled to live as humans. While it is perhaps a question of philosophy what constitutes a human right, it is more clear what constitutes an abuse of human rights. The world has never been short on abusers and is surely not now. Only the names and faces have changed over time. The powerful tend to be the abusers and the weak the abused. Being aware of the abuses can at least focus light on them and perhaps serve as a proactive response. This bibliography presents hundreds of citations of human right violations under the categories: Basic Human Rights; North America; Latin America; Europe; Asia; Middle East and Africa. Access is provided via Title, Author and Subject Indexes.

Download or read book New Perspectives on the End of the Cold War written by Bernhard Blumenau and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-02-02 with total page 279 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This collection of essays makes a significant contribution to the historiography of the end of the Cold War. Research on the causes and consequences of the end of the Cold War is constantly growing. Initially, it was dominated by fairly simplistic, and often politically motivated, debates revolving around the role played by major "winners" and "losers". This volume addresses a number of diverse issues and seeks to challenge several "common wisdoms" about the end of the Cold War. Together, the contributions provide insights on the role of personalities as well as the impact of transnational movements and forces on the unexpected political transformations of the late 1980s and early 1990s. Geographically, the chapters largely focus on the United States, Europe, with special emphasis on Germany, and the Soviet Union. The individual chapters are drawn together by the overarching theme relating to a particular "common wisdom": were the transformations that occurred truly "unexpected"? This collection of essays will make an important contribution to the growing literature on the developments that produced the collapse of the Iron Curtain, the demise of the Soviet Union and the end of the Cold War. This volume will be of much interest to students of Cold War Studies, International History, European Politics and International Relations in general.
