This book was released on 2018-10-04 with total page 598 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Lectures on the Science of Human Life, Vol. 1 of 2 I have endeavored, as far as I could in such awork as this, to follow the plan of Euclid's Elements of Geometryz - that is, by referring con tinuall y to previously ascertained principles, or established facts and con elusions, whenever they are involved or illustrated or alluded to in any process of reasoning, I have made one part explain and corroborate anoth er, and by this means, I have put it in the power of every individual of suitable age and ordinary intelligence, by a proper degree of application, to attain to a very clear and full understanding of my work, not only in its particular, practical bearings, but in its general system of principles as a science - I hardly need remark however, that a work of this kind, cannot be read as an amusing novel, nor as an entertaining narrative or history; but it must be studied, attentively, and perhaps at first, with considerable labor, or few will be the wiser or the better for the time they devote to it. It is not possible that such a work as this, which has required the intense mental labor of many years to produce it, can be fully comprehended, from a single hasty perusal, even by a well disci i plined, and much improved mind; and still less, by minds destitute of Scientific education and habits of close and connected thinking. Book A Foray into the Worlds of Animals and Humans

Download or read book A Foray into the Worlds of Animals and Humans written by Jakob von Uexküll and published by U of Minnesota Press. This book was released on 2013-11-30 with total page 280 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “Is the tick a machine or a machine operator? Is it a mere object or a subject?” With these questions, the pioneering biophilosopher Jakob von Uexküll embarks on a remarkable exploration of the unique social and physical environments that individual animal species, as well as individuals within species, build and inhabit. This concept of the umwelt has become enormously important within posthumanist philosophy, influencing such figures as Heidegger, Merleau-Ponty, Deleuze and Guattari, and, most recently, Giorgio Agamben, who has called Uexküll “a high point of modern antihumanism.” A key document in the genealogy of posthumanist thought, A Foray into the Worlds of Animals and Humans advances Uexküll’s revolutionary belief that nonhuman perceptions must be accounted for in any biology worth its name; it also contains his arguments against natural selection as an adequate explanation for the present orientation of a species’ morphology and behavior. A Theory of Meaning extends his thinking on the umwelt, while also identifying an overarching and perceptible unity in nature. Those coming to Uexküll’s work for the first time will find that his concept of the umwelt holds new possibilities for the terms of animality, life, and the framework of biopolitics.

It is, indeed, true that abundant leisure aftera busy life, and the necessity of seeking a diversion of thoughtifrom reflections prompted by long and severe illness, and still more severe domestic cala mities, may be deemed a fair excuse for committing these ebullitions to paper; but the excuse stops here, and will not justify the sending them into the world. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Human Life In reviewing the facts concerning humanity, which are well authenticated at the present date, with the object of getting a composite view of the greatest of all "world riddles" - "Life" - possibly nothing tends so largely to expand our mental horizon as a study of the earth itself or man's place of abode. The ideas of the educated and cultured mind, at the beginning of the twentieth century, upon cosmogony, are necessarily of such a character that man's heretofore undisputed boast of being the objective and acme of creation or evolution is forced into that great mass of theories which science has proven to be absolutely untenable. My air which we breathe; of sugar and vinegar; otcha1coal and diamond. And thus again, by differently arranging the same molecules of matter, red, orange, yellow, green, blue, and other colors and tints are produced; and in like manner, are formed the most flagrant and most offensive odor; and the different qualities of sweet and sour and bitter, etc. And there are reasons for believing that light and heat, and electricity and magnetism, instead of being essentially different substances, are but the results of particular aggregations or arrangements and conditions of the same primary atoms of matter. This book was released on 2017-09-17 with total page 562 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Life and Letters of Thomas Henry Huxley, Vol. 1 of 2 The American edition of the Life and Letters of Thomas H mm: Huxley calls for a few words by way of preface, for there existed a particular relationship between the English writer and his transatlantic readers. From the time that his Lay Sermons was published his essays found in the United States an eager audience, who appreciated above all things his directness and honesty of purpose and the unflinching spirit in which he pursued the truth. Whether or not, as some affirm, the American public discovered Mr. Herbert Spencer, they responded at once to the influence of the younger evolutionary writer, whose wide and exact knowledge of nature was but a stepping - stone to his interest in human life and its prob lems. And when, a few years later, after more than one invitation, he came to lecture in the United States and made himself personally known to his many readers, it was this widespread response to his influence which made his wel come comparable, as was said at the time, to a royal progress.
