Book Cities and Growth

Download or read book Cities and Growth written by Desmond Beckstead and published by . This book was released on 2010 with total page 40 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Using 2001 Census data, this paper investigates the extent to which the urban-rural gap in the earnings of employed workers is associated with human capital composition and agglomeration economies. Both factors have been theoretically and empirically linked to urban-rural earnings differences. Agglomeration economies--the productivity enhancing effects of the geographic concentration of workers and firms--may underlie these differences as they may be stronger in larger urban centres. But human capital composition may also drive the urban-rural earnings gap if workers with higher levels of education and/or experience are more prevalent in cities. The analysis finds that up to one-half of urban-rural earnings differences are related to human capital composition. It also demonstrates that agglomeration economies related to city size are associated with earnings levels, but their influence is significantly reduced by the inclusion of controls for human capital.

Book A Canadian Priorities Agenda

Download or read book A Canadian Priorities Agenda written by France St-Hilaire and published by IRPP. This book was released on 2007 with total page 592 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Rising income inequality has been at the forefront of public debate in Canada in recent years, yet there is still much to learn about the economic forces driving the distribution of earnings and income in this country and how they might evolve in the future. With research showing that the tax-and-transfer system is losing the ability to counteract income disparity, the need for policy-makers to understand the factors at play is all the more urgent. Income Inequality provides a comprehensive review of Canadian inequality trends, including changing earnings and income dynamics among the middle class and top earners, wage and job polarization across provinces, and persistent poverty among vulnerable groups. The Institute for Research on Public Policy (IRPP), in collaboration with the Canadian Labour Market and Skills Researcher Network (CLSRN), presents new evidence by some of the country’s leading experts on the impact of skills and education, unionization and labour relations laws, as well as the complex interplay of redistributive policies and politics over time. Amid growing anxieties about the economic prospects of the middle class, Income Inequality will serve to inform the public discourse on inequality, an issue that ultimately concerns all Canadians.

Book Contribution of Human Capital Accumulation to Canadian Economic Growth

Download or read book Contribution of Human Capital Accumulation to Canadian Economic Growth written by Audra J. Bowlus and published by . This book was released on 2022 with total page 21 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper quantifies the contribution of human capital accumulation to the growth of real gross domestic product (GDP) in Canada. GDP growth is decomposed into contributions from physical capital, hours worked, human capital supplied per hour and total factor productivity. Using a "flat spot" identification strategy, we separately estimate the price and quantity of human capital using wage data from the Labour Force Survey. We find that growth in human capital supplied per hour explains around one-fifth of GDP growth and two-thirds of the Solow residual over the period from 1997 to 2018. While growth in hours worked is expected to slow down in the near future, human capital supplied per hour is expected to continue to be an important driver of GDP growth.

Book Commerce International Le Commerce Interprovincial Et la Croissance Des Provinces Canadiennes

Download or read book Commerce International Le Commerce Interprovincial Et la Croissance Des Provinces Canadiennes written by Serge Coulombe and published by Canadian Museum of Civilization/Musee Canadien Des Civilisations. This book was released on 2003 with total page 106 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper provides an empirical analysis of the comparative evolution of interprovincial & international trade and their effects on regional growth for the Canadian provinces since 1981. It first establishes the trend in the relationship between the ratios of interprovincial & international trade to gross domestic product, revealing a sharp break that occurred around 1991. The analysis casts doubt on the pure diversion model often used in trade modelling. The second part uses a conditional convergence-growth model to estimate the respective long-run effects of interprovincial & international trade on Canadian regional economies, specifically in relation to productivity, relative gross domestic product per capita, and job creation. The final chapter discusses implications of the results for regional economies & economic policy issues.

Book Cities and Growth

Download or read book Cities and Growth written by Desmond Beckstead and published by . This book was released on 2008 with total page 38 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "University degree holders in large cities are more prevalent and are growing at a more rapid pace than in smaller cities and rural areas. This relatively high rate of growth stems from net migratory flows and/or higher rates of degree attainment in cities. Using data from the 1996 and 2001 Censuses, this paper tests the relative importance of these two sources of human capital growth by decomposing degree-holder growth across cities into net migratory flows (domestic and foreign) and in situ growth: that is, growth resulting from higher rates of degree attainment among the resident populations of cities."--Document.

This integrating perspective will be organized around the concept of competitiveness and how that concept can be understood and operationalized in various ways; • Introduces students to a range of techniques essential to success in economic development planning. In addition to a wealth of case studies and pedagogical features in the book, this text is also complemented by online resources. In offering a full toolkit of economic development knowledge, techniques and strategies, this text will thoroughly prepare students for a career in urban planning, transport planning, human geography, applied economic analysis, geographic information systems, or work as an economic development practitioner.

Book Cities and Growth Human Capital Location Choice

Download or read book Cities and Growth Human Capital Location Choice written by William Mark Brown and published by . This book was released on 2012 with total page 35 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A growing literature has found a positive association between human capital and long-run employment growth across cities. These studies have increased interest in understanding the location choices of university degree-holders, a group often used as a proxy measure of human capital. Based on data from the 2001 Canadian Census of Population, this paper investigates determinants of the location choices of degree- and non-degree-holders. With a multinomial logit model, it tests a series of hypotheses about the differential effects of thick labor markets and amenities on the location choice of these groups across metropolitan and non-metropolitan areas in Canada.--Publisher's website.
