Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dubbed the Indiana Jones of wildlife science by The New York Times, Alan Rabinowitz has devoted—and risked—his life to protect nature’s great endangered mammals. He has journeyed to the remote corners of the earth in search of wild things, weathering treacherous terrain, plane crashes, and hostile governments. Life in the Valley of Death recounts his most ambitious and dangerous adventure yet: the creation of the world’s largest tiger preserve. The tale is set in the lush Hukaung Valley of Myanmar, formerly known as Burma. An escape route for refugees fleeing the Japanese army during World War II, this rugged stretch of land claimed the lives of thousands of children, women, and soldiers. Today it is home to one of the largest tiger populations outside of India—a population threatened by rampant poaching and the recent encroachment of gold prospectors. To save the remaining tigers, Rabinowitz must navigate not only an unforgiving landscape, but the tangled web of politics in Myanmar. Faced with a military dictatorship, an insurgent army, tribes once infamous for taking the heads of their enemies, and villagers living on less than one U.S. dollar per day, the scientist and adventurer most comfortable with animals is thrust into a diplomatic minefield. As he works to balance the interests of disparate factions and endangered wildlife, his own life is threatened by an incurable disease. The resulting story is one of destruction and loss, but also renewal. In forests reviled as the valley of death, Rabinowitz finds new life for himself, for communities haunted by poverty and violence, and for the tigers he vowed to protect.
Download or read book Burma Road 1943 44 written by Jon Diamond and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2016-01-20 with total page 100 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Myitkyina was a vital objective in the Allied re-conquest of Burma in 1943–44. Following the disastrous retreat from Burma in April 1942, China had become isolated from re-supply except for the dangerous air route for US transports over the Himalaya Mountains. The Burma Road, which ran from Lashio (south of Myitkyina) through the mountains to Kunming was closed as a supply route from Rangoon after the Japanese conquest. Without military assistance, China would be forced to surrender and Imperial Japanese Army forces could be diverted to other Pacific war zones. This is the history of the ambitious joint Allied assault led by American Lt. Gen. Joseph W Stilwell and featuring British, American and Chinese forces as they clashed with three skilled regiments of the Japanese 18th Division. Packed with first-hand accounts, specially commissioned artwork, maps and illustrations and dozens of rare photographs this book reveals the incredible Allied attack on Myitkyina.
Download or read book From Burma With Love written by Stephen W. Reiss and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2023-06-30 with total page 1644 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During World War II, the Japanese blockaded all the harbors along the coast of China and Burma. To get supplies into central China, the Americans, British, and their allies built the Burma Road which became the Epic Story of the China-Burma-India (CBI) Theater. It was 700 miles through jungles, over mountains, and crossing streams. Some 200,000 native laborers were involved. That was Irwin Reiss' job -- recruiting local tribesmen to move dirt and build bridges by hand and limited heavy help from Caterpillar tractors. Read these letters from the jungle and from the homefront and then ask yourself why is ongoing turmoil in other parts of the world.

Download or read book The Collapse of British Rule in Burma written by Michael D. Leigh and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2018-07-26 with total page 301 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In May 1942 colonial Burma was in a state of military, economic and constitutional collapse. Japanese forces controlled almost the whole country and thousands of evacuees were trapped in a huge area of no-man's-land in the north. They made their way to India through the so-called 'jungles of death', attempting to trek out of Burma amidst perilous conditions. Drawing on diverse and previously unpublished accounts, Michael D. Leigh analyses the experiences of evacuees in both Burma and India and critically examines the impact of evacuation on colonial and Burmese politics in the lead-up to independence in 1948. This study will be of particular interest to students and scholars of Burmese history, 20th-century imperialism and the global reach of the Second World War.

Book excerpt: The main body of the book is concerned with the theme that empirical political behaviour among the Kachin is a compromise response to the polarised political doctrines of gumsa and gumlao.. Nearly one-third of this book consists of Chapter V entitiled 'The Structural Categories of Kachin Gumsa Society'. It is concerned with the interpretation of a series of verbal concepts and their interconnections. This long chapter is placed between a relatively short account of a particular Kachin community directly observed (Chapter IV) and a series of chapters (VI, VII, VIII) containing secondhand ethnographic and historical evidence.

Download or read book Against State against History written by Jangkhomang Guite and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2018-11-20 with total page 448 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Life on the margins of the state is not a dark, static, and silent world. It is, in fact, a radiant world, involving multiple processes of reenactment of life, lifeways, and individual–community relations. This book is a radical reevaluation of the dominant civilizational narratives on the ‘tribes’ that normally demonize them as a ‘nuisance’ to the ‘civilized’ Northeast India. The book delves into the migration history and the conditions in Northeast India in which sections of the valley population escaped to the hills against the state. It explores how in this physical dispersion to the highland terrain, they choose an independent village polity, defended by trained warriors, fortressed at the top of hills, connected by repulsive pathways, following the jhum economy, and adopting pliable social, cultural, ethnic and gender formations. This condition of the society is understood as one of statelessness’ or ‘unstate’, the process involving disowning the state and becoming an egalitarian society where freedom of individuals is located at the core of their cultural collective.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: General Stilwell’s ad hoc force of Merrill’s Marauders, American-trained Chinese divisions, Kachin guerrillas and General Wingate’s Chindits conducted a northern Burmese offensive that led to the coup de main seizure of Myitkyina’s airfield in May 1944. In August 1944, after a protracted siege, Myitkyina town on the Irrawaddy River fell to the Allies. At the same time elements of General Slim’s 14th Army were mounting a defence of northeastern India at Imphal and Kohima against Imperial Japan’s 15th Army; Operation U-Go, led by General Mutaguchi, from March to July 1944. Thereafter, the Allies began two major campaigns. First, the northern Burmese Sino-American offensive re-opened the land supply route to China via a newly-built Burma Road, which replaced the American Air Transport Command’s ‘Hump’ airlift that had kept Generalissimo Chiang Kai-shek’s Chinese forces supplied. The second offensive was by General Bill Slim’s multi-national British 14th Army under, which advanced south-east through the Arakan. The ‘Forgotten Army’ eventually re-occupied Mandalay and Rangoon. These legendary campaigns are superbly described in words and images in this fine addition to the Images of War series.
Download or read book Exodus Burma written by Felicity Goodall and published by The History Press. This book was released on 2011-10-31 with total page 367 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Until a few weeks before the fall of Rangoon, the British had not dreamt the Japanese would invade Burma. So in early 1942, British soldiers trained for desert warfare fought a Japanese Army trained and equipped for the jungle. Those who survived this fierce fighting faced malaria, air attack, and lack of food and water, on the long walk out through the Valley of Death. Ragged groups of soldiers and civilians were forced to trek out of Burma through some of the most inhospitable terrain in the world. They hacked their way through jungle, forded rivers, and climbed steep mountainsides to escape. Many did not survive the journey. Among these incredible stories was that of Bill Williams, who led refugees out on a herd of elephants. Other civilians who had enjoyed an idyllic colonial lifestyle were ill-equipped for the journey. Setting off with the family silver and their pets, they soon had to abandon all but the essentials in order to survive. Thousands died, but many more crossed the border into India and safety.
