Book Anna Hubbard

Download or read book Anna Hubbard written by Mia Cunningham and published by University Press of Kentucky. This book was released on 2014-07-11 with total page 275 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Anna Eikenhout (1902-1986) was an honors graduate of Ohio State University, a fine-arts librarian, a skilled pianist, and an avid reader in three languages. Harlan Hubbard (1900-1988), a little-known painter and would-be shantyboater, seemed an unlikely husband, but together they lived a life out of the pages of Thoreau's Walden. Much of what is known about the Hubbards comes from Harlan's books and journals. Concerning the seasons and the landscape, his writing was rapturous, yet he was emotionally reticent when discussing human affairs in general or Anna in particular. Yet it was through her efforts that their life on the river was truly civilized. Visitors to Payne Hollow recall Anna as a generous, gracious hostess, whose intelligence and artistry made the small house seem grander than a mansion.

Book excerpt: Hubbard traces its heritage to the historic Connecticut Western Reserve and is the living legacy of Nehemiah Hubbard Jr., a member of the Connecticut Land Company who purchased 15,274 acres and hired Samuel Tylee, Hubbards first settler, as his land agent to measure and sell lots. Hubbard remained a quiet farming community until the coal-mining boom of the early 1860s changed its future forever. Immigrants from Europe flocked here to work in the mines, and the industrialization of this small town began in earnest. Prosperity continued until the decline of the regions steel industry in the 1970s and, later, the loss of several major businesses. Along with the new millennium, however, came the formation of the Joint Economic Development District between Hubbard City and Township, which brought much-needed development to the Interstate 80, State Route 7/U.S. 62 corridor.

Book Our Beloved Kin

    Book Details:
  • Author : Lisa Brooks
  • Publisher : Yale University Press
  • Release : 2018-01-09
  • ISBN : 0300231113
  • Pages : 448 pages

Download or read book Our Beloved Kin written by Lisa Brooks and published by Yale University Press. This book was released on 2018-01-09 with total page 448 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A compelling and original recovery of Native American resistance and adaptation to colonial America With rigorous original scholarship and creative narration, Lisa Brooks recovers a complex picture of war, captivity, and Native resistance during the “First Indian War” (later named King Philip’s War) by relaying the stories of Weetamoo, a female Wampanoag leader, and James Printer, a Nipmuc scholar, whose stories converge in the captivity of Mary Rowlandson. Through both a narrow focus on Weetamoo, Printer, and their network of relations, and a far broader scope that includes vast Indigenous geographies, Brooks leads us to a new understanding of the history of colonial New England and of American origins. Brooks’s pathbreaking scholarship is grounded not just in extensive archival research but also in the land and communities of Native New England, reading the actions of actors during the seventeenth century alongside an analysis of the landscape and interpretations informed by tribal history.

Book Among the Scientologists

Download or read book Among the Scientologists written by Donald A. Westbrook and published by . This book was released on 2019 with total page 353 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Church of Scientology is one of the most recognizable American-born new religions, but perhaps the least understood. With academic and popular interest on the rise, many books have been written about Scientology and surely more will follow. Although academics have begun to pay more attention to Scientology, the subject has received remarkably little qualitative attention. Indeed, no work has systematically addressed such questions as: what do Scientologists themselves have to say about their religion's history, theology, and practices? How does Scientology act as a religion for them? What does "lived religion" look like for a Scientologist? This is not so much a book about the Church of Scientology, its leaders, or its controversies, as it is a compilation of narratives and histories based on the largely unheard or ignored perspectives of Scientologists themselves. Drawing on six years of interviews, fieldwork, and research conducted among members of the Church of Scientology, this groundbreaking work examines features of the new religion's history, theology, and praxis in ways that move discussion beyond apostate-driven and expos accounts.
