Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A History of Sculpture Much that might properly occur in the preface of this book will be found in its opening chapter. I there set out. The ground to be covered, and define the point of view from which I have treated my facts. These few remarks will, accordingly, be addressed to any who may think that a work bearing the title A History of Sculpture requires a word of introduction. My justification for the title and, indeed, for the work as a whole, is that I have not attempted to write a new text-book. In my view, all great art is essentially national art. It can therefore only be understood in the light of national and international history. For this reason, I have given much more attention to the artistic interpreta tion of historical events and social circumstances than most historians of the arts have deemed necessary. Throughout I have written from the standpoint of one who believes that the great schools of sculpture were created, not by individuals of genius, but by the peoples to whom they appealed. A work written on these lines can fairly claim to be A History of Sculpture. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. This book was released on 2018-03-21 with total page 468 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A History of Ancient Sculpture, Vol. 1 Following, then, the guidance of the band of scholars who have so gloriously commenced this task, I have attempted in the present work to treat the sculptural monuments of the different nations of antiquity, and to build up some semblance of the stately fabric of old. Many, alas! Are the blocks still lacking to complete the structure of an exhaustive history of ancient sculpture; but if we surround the mute monuments existing, with the faiths out of which they Sprung, and pour upon them the light of national custom and thought, they will become eloquent witnesses to the art-life of those remote ages. Book A History of Ancient Sculpture Classic Reprint

Download or read book A History of Ancient Sculpture Classic Reprint written by Lucy Myers Mitchell and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-07-16 with total page 802 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A History of Ancient Sculpture Fragments of a great artistic past have come down to us, now torn from their original surroundings, and wrapped in mystery to our changed modern world. For centuries these monuments have lain buried beneath the soil, or, when visible, have too often suffered sadly from neglect. Sundering from this vast treasure what belongs to the plastic art, we find the sculptural monuments widely scattered, and often hopelessly isolated, so that a feeling of discouragement will sometimes come over one attempting to solve the riddles propounded. Here it is that the archaeologist comes to our aid, with his new-born science, which dates hardly farther back than the days of Winckelmann; and bringing to bear upon his subject the patient labor of the excavator and of the conscientious collector, the resources of profound learn ing and of a comparative spirit, and the breadth of a scientific vision which is able to classify and group the sundered fragments, he makes the dis jointed members more and more parts of an organic whole. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Primer of Sculpture The term classical, for instance, which is used to denote a school of itself in opposition to Gothic art, or to work of a realistic character, is a very misleading term, and used always in a loose and vague way. In literature the use of the word is more limited and its sense better defined but nevertheless even here there is in some sense a vagueness about its application. Book Technique of Sculpture Classic Reprint

Download or read book Technique of Sculpture Classic Reprint written by William Ordway Partridge and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-21 with total page 132 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Technique of Sculpture In his book Art for America the author has attempted to show that sculpture is not declining, that so far from being a lost art, it is one that we have only now thoroughly discovered, and that the American people are actually on the threshold of an art era that may, if properly evolved, prove as beautiful, expressive, and inspiring as is the sublime sculpture of Greece. More nonsense is taught and written to-day about sculpture than about any other of the arts. It is full time we gave to this subject the serious consideration it merits. It has been the aim, in this book, to speak of the art as it really is, and the work is given forth with the hope that it may result in the creation, to some extent, of a fresh interest in sculpture. Download or read book Historical Handbook of Italian Sculpture Classic Reprint written by Charles C. Perkins and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03-15 with total page 506 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Historical Handbook of Italian Sculpture In preparing this volume for the press from materials already made use of in a larger work on the same subject, and from those which have been added to the common stock of informa tion since its publication, I have thought it best to speak of Pre-revival sculpture throughout Italy in an introductory chapter, and to begin the work - proper with the Revival. After that era, as the personality of the sculptor becomes more and more pronounced, biographical materials increase, until in the case of such representative men as Michelangelo little remains to be discovered. Modern research is however constantly active in the pursuit of fresh information, so that we can never con sider what we know at any given time as final, but the historian can do no more than avail himself of present acquisitions, and this I have endeavoured to do.
