This book was released on 2015-07-04 with total page 406 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Teaching of History and Civics in the Elementary, and the Secondary School It is the aim of this book to aid teachers of history, and especially those who have not had special training in historical work, better to comprehend the nature of the subject. Until they have considered the development of history as a way of portraying the experience of mankind, and know something of the methods by which it seeks to reach the sure basis of fact, and until they have seriously studied the problems of historical instruction, they cannot feel a large interest in the subject, and consequently cannot inspire their pupils with such an interest. The first part of this book has been written to set them on the way toward a better comprehension of these aspects of history. The second part offers a review of the general field, which may guide those who require such help intelligently to study its many phases. While this review is constructed on the basis of the programme suggested in the first part, it may serve almost equally well where the programme in use includes only sections of the field, or distributes the matter in a different way. This book was released on 2018-02-02 with total page 170 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Course of Study in History, Civics, and Ethics for the Day Elementary Schools Fundamentally, history, -civics, and Geography deal with relationships or problems arising from man's efforts to live with his fellows on the earth. They are different aspects of the same social subject, rather than three closely correlated subjects as they have often been viewed. This conception of History, Civics, and Geography as a tri-une subject has exercised a controlling influence over the selection of the kind and extent of teaching material, and the recommendations of types of teaching method, made in this Course of Study. It should, therefore, be thoroughly understood and appreciated by the teacher who would achieve the aim intended in this Course. Book Socializing the Child

Download or read book Socializing the Child written by Sarah A. Dynes and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-06 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Socializing the Child: A Guide to the Teaching of History in the Primary Grades A marked characteristic of the new century in all progressive nations is the quickened interest in the child and his education. Owing to this deepened interest in both the nature and the nurture of the child, professional educators are beginning to look more earnestly to history, sociology, psychology, and ethics for guidance and help in their work. This book treats certain aspects of social education in primary grades with the greatest possible simplicity. Especial emphasis is placed upon ways and means of enlarging the child's experience so as to favor the development of the historic sense. The various solutions of the problems of procuring shelter, food, clothing; of hearing burdens, of traveling; of exchanging goods and of celebrating holidays, make an excellent background for later work in history. Because each of the various countries selected by the author for instruction in primary grades solves these problems in its own characteristic way the contrasts arc conspicuous, and serve as a stimulus to both observation and further curiosity concerning human institutions and discoveries. Because each school is a center of community life, each pupil can he trained into responsible membership in that community. He can be saturated with the spirit of service and provided with the instruments of effective self-direction suited to his stage of development. The problems there solved reflect the life of the larger society of which the school is a part. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Course of Study in Civics: Grades One to Six, for the Public Schools of Philadelphia It is the purpose of the course in civics in the first grade to lay the foundation of good citizenship by devel oping ih the child some of the fundamental civic virtues. The work in this grade is, therefore, primarily training in morals and manners. There are three conditions necessary to the develop ment of right moral conduct. The child must know what is right; he must desire to do it; but, most important of all, he must be trained, through constant practice, in the formation of goo-d habits. The knowledge of the right and the emotional basis for future action may be given by means of story, poem, song, memory gem, games, dramatization and other class or group exercises. In such instruction, care should be taken to avoid pointing the moral, as to do so is likely to Spoil the emotional reaction desired. While this instruo tion will constitute a very small part of the day's work, the doing side or practical application will be constant. In the main, the teacher's method should be one of securing results by commendation rather than by censure. Book The Teaching of Civics Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Teaching of Civics Classic Reprint written by Mabel Hill and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-07 with total page 166 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Teaching of Civics We have come at last to a sound notion of teaching civics in the schools. Long experience with traditional modes of instruction has indicated their failure, and teachers now turn to a more direct application of important principles of pedagogical procedure long urged by the practical psychologist and recently verified by careful experimental work. For a generation past the teaching of civics aimed at little more than the acquisition of knowledge about government. It was assumed that the school's function did not extend beyond an intellectual treatment of social and political welfare. The subject-matter was formal and necessarily barren, remote from ordinary human interests, and more remote still from any concerns of children. In the earlier years it consisted of a study of the mechanics of government through analysis of the fundamental law as provided by constitutions and charters. More recently the social functions of government have been given the chief place in school study, and political structure has been made secondary. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from How to Study, and Teach History: With Particular Reference to the History of the United States I am not disparaging the study of man's environment, however, but only pointing out the extremes to which the reaction against the former somewhat abstract view has led. The old theory was made by men intoxicated with the great idea of individual freedom, and as a con sequence it slighted the material factor of civilization. It was reluctant to admit the existence of such a factor. The reaction that has set in 'from the province of natural science proposes to ignore man's freedom and take ao count only of the determining circumstance, which sur round individuals and groups of men. Book excerpt: Excerpt from How to Teach American History: A Handbook for Teachers and Students This volume is intended for use as a textbook in normal schools, teacher-training classes, and teachers' institutes, and as a handbook for the teacher and stu dent in school or at home. The principles discussed are believed to be true of history in general, but the application throughout has been made to American history and to the study and teaching of history in American schools. An effort has been made to have the style simple and intelligible. Technical terms not well settled in common usage have been avoided. A rather close and logical classification by chapters has been attempted, and the book lists have been classified and distributed. It has been my aim throughout to give in the book lists and footnotes information of practical value and to place it where it can be found conveniently. It is hoped that the complete index appended will be found a useful feature. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
