Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Construction of the Small House: A Simple and Useful Source of Information, on the Methods of Building Small American, Homes, for Anyone Planning to Build Immediately after the war the housing shortage made itself very evident, because the landlords discovered that it existed, and realized that they had it within their power to exact extortionate rents. Statisticians got busy and put their heads together and informed the public that within the next five years there would have to be built some 3,300,000 new homes to properly house the people. The building magazines likewise were predicting great things in construction, and all in the building industry were looking for fat years of prosperity, for here was the need and there was the pressure of the high rents. Why should not the thousands of families that had waited build now, when they saw their money going to waste in high rents? All kinds of advertisements were sent out to urge the public to build, and own-your-own-home shows sprang up in every large city, and one could find plenty of builders who would say that one should build immediately, before prices went higher. Book A Book of House Plans

Download or read book A Book of House Plans written by William Harold Butterfield and published by . This book was released on 2015-06-30 with total page 156 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Book of House Plans: Floor Plans and Cost Data of Original Designs of Various Architectural Types, of Which Full Working Drawings and Specifications Are Available To design a small country house possessing artistic and economic features, the construction of which may be accomplished for a minimum amount, is not among the simplest problems of the architectural profession. The most satisfactory solutions are arrived at by a process of elimination, resulting in a compact plan possessing the essential requirements of the average home-builder, and arranged in such a manner that the total area is proportionately divided to best suit the uses for which each unit of the plan is intended. The houses shown on the following pages have been carefully designed to meet the requirements of the average family desiring a house of moderate size and pleasing appearance. They are taken from the actual working drawings or from houses already erected. The aim of the authors has been to emphasize the really essential features and eliminate all that might be considered superfluous or not consistent in a house of moderate cost. Simplicity of plan and exterior treatment means economy but not necessarily ugliness. The success of an architectural design, in a building of any description depends principally upon its proportion, scale and fenestration, and no amount of elaboration can atone for a poorly proportioned building. Bearing all this in mind, we have planned our houses, knowing that the people who will live in them will prefer to have their rooms as large as possible for the price they pay and to have the construction and materials of the best throughout. We know that buildings cost so much per cubic foot or square foot of ground area. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Successful Houses and How to Build Them Classic Reprint

Download or read book Successful Houses and How to Build Them Classic Reprint written by Charles E. White and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-01 with total page 540 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Successful Houses and How to Build Them An inherent desire seems to be born in every one to have a home of one's own, - to posses a little place, however small, - to be one's own lord and master. This desire is natural. It betokens a healthy mind, a worthy ambition, - a lofty ideal. There are many reasons why it is not to one's best interests to rent. Recall the most responsible men and women of any town and you will find they are the property owners. The man who does not own his home is looked upon by others as an underling or weakling. He is regarded in the eyes of his neighbors as lacking in initiative, in the eyes of his family he is considered unfortunate, in his own mind he realizes that he has never quite achieved success. Look about and see the men on small salaries who own their homes. They have toiled no harder than others, but rigid economy has made it possible to squeeze out a few dollars a month to apply to their house contract, and in after years they have something to show for the money expended. Why should we help to support our landlord? If a small amount of capital invested each month by those who have not the ready cash to pay for a house and lot will in the end provide a home, why not use these sums in that way instead of handling them to the landlord, enriching him at our own expense? Book The Grammar of House Planning

Download or read book The Grammar of House Planning written by Robert Scott Burn and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-10 with total page 204 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Grammar of House Planning: Hints on Arranging and Modifying Plans of Cottages, Street-Houses, Farm-Houses, Villas, Mansions, and Out-Buildings Still further to render the work practically useful in all departments, brief Essays are given on several important departments of Arrangement, Construction, and Internal Conveniences, as arrangement of Apartments, Ventilation, Lighting, Drainage, Aspect, Soil, and Site, 850. In these, it is believed, some hints of a useful and novel character will be found worthy the attention of the Reader. The work is not designed exclusively for the purpose of conveying the opinions of the Compiler on the various points of which its pages treat, but as a medium also for giving the opinions of others, whose position in the world of Science and Art entitles them to be considered as authorities. To embody this idea the Compiler has, therefore, carefully selected from a wide range of authorities, Opinions which cannot fail to be otherwise than useful to the practical man. The sources of these being generally acknowledged in the body of the work, it is unnecessary here to give them in full; the Compiler cannot, however, omit here noting his special obligations to the pages of the Builder, the Building News, and to various papers read before the Professional Societies. If the Reader will derive as much profit and pleasure from their perusal as the Compiler has done while selecting them for republication in the pages of his little work, his labour will not have been in vain. At the same time, while reproducing these opinions of others, the Compiler has not refrained from giving those of his own on the various subjects discussed in its pages. These will easily be distinguished from the other portions of selected matter; and for what they are worth the Reader must take them. It is right here, however, to say, that much of the matter embodying these opinions of the Compiler, formed part of a series of Lectures delivered by him to the members of an important public educational institution. Book Building and Furnishing a Home Classic Reprint

Download or read book Building and Furnishing a Home Classic Reprint written by Elizabeth Chesley Baity and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-27 with total page 48 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Building and Furnishing a Home The first thing that an architect tells you is that the last thing to think about when you go to plan a house is how the outside will look. For a good many years Dorothy Dix and other philosophers have been telling us much the same thing in regard to the selection Of husbands. But in spite Of this good advice as to the comparative unimportance of the facade, for a good many years to come women are going to go right on falling in, love with a man because of the way his hair and eye-lashes grow and buying houses because of their roof-lines, window-shutters, and cornice trim. In view of this natural fact Of feminine logic, we will begin our study of houses with a survey of architectural style. Instead of be ginning at the beginning in the best scholastic fashions, we will select several of the most popular styles and inquire into the causes for their being as they are. If we began our study with the earliest American houses we would encounter some very primitive structures - perhaps nothing more than windbreaks made by sticking branches into the ground. The first Americans, arriving here from Asia by way of the Behring Straits perhaps as long as years ago, did not bring much of an architectural heritage with them. Except for their babies and spears and dogs they brought very little indeed. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
