Book Legalized Gambling

Download or read book Legalized Gambling written by Rod L. Evans and published by Open Court Publishing. This book was released on 1998 with total page 482 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Forty-eight states now permit legalized gambling in some form, thirty-seven states run lotteries, forty-seven allow bingo houses, and more than a dozen states permit betting on dog races. American gamblers wager over $300 billion yearly in legal gambling. Although many Americans enjoy gambling and see it as harmless recreation and a fairly painless way to generate revenue without levying direct taxes, many social conservatives see gambling as a socially destructive temptation that ought notto be indulged by private citizens, much less sponsored by government. Recently, economic pressures resulting from less federal revenue and Americans' growing aversion to tax increases have led many state governments to liberalize gambling laws or sponsor gambling, sparking a lively debate. Legalized Gambling contains twenty articles focusing on different aspects of gambling policy by experts in the fields of public policy, law, psychiatry, rhetoric, religion, economics, and politics. The contributors address all areas of the debate, including the following: -- What moral issues are at the center of the debate? -- What are the true economic costs and benefits of legalized gambling? How are they often hidden or misconstrued in order to support either prohibition or legalization? -- How has the history of gambling in America shaped our current policies? -- Is governmental regulation an invasion of personal privacy? -- What are the legitimate uses of laws? -- Is "pathological gambling" a justifiable medical diagnosis? -- Do gambling establishments run by Native Americans deserve special consideration or regulation? "(In a lottery) ... the tax is laid on the willing only, that is to say, on those who can risk the price of a ticket without sensible injury for the possibility of a higher prize". -- Thomas Jefferson

This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 345 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As a foreword, here we publish an email letter of Late Professor Herb Simon, Nobel Laureate, that he wrote on the occasion ofthe death of the fatherofa friend. This letterofcondolence, more than any other wisdom, tells about the essence of the process of scientific creation, which is so important for both, the specific subject being covered by this book, and for the general science. When asked to address an SSGRR conference in Italy, prior to his death, Professor Herb Simon agreed that these lines be presented to all those who are interested in understanding the real essence oftheir own scientific struggle. Dear Professor Milutinovic: I want to extend my deepest sympathy to you and your family on the death of your father. His career was a very distinguished one, and his life spanned a most complex and difficult sequence of epochs in your country's history. Our generation (I am just a year younger than he was), like all its predecessors, leaves many tasks - hopefully no more than it inherited - for the next generation to take up; but even knowing that it must be so does not remove one's senseofloss in the parting.

Book The Business Director Army General

Download or read book The Business Director Army General written by John B. Daniels and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2011-02-23 with total page 220 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: I own up. My greatest fantasy is to look at things in the light of others. These things may not be identical, complementing, or overly related. I believe to do a comparison or two is quite enlightening; it keeps the mind alert and focused all the time. That is the sharpness I encourage in the business practice of today to become a multimillionaire. When am on the highway and a sleek, smart car zooms past, I do not hesitate to cut short whatever conversation to comment to my travel mate, What a cute car! Isnt the finish deadly, the color superb? I would be smiling the moment he retorts, Its cool, deadly, marvelous! Then I look back via the side mirror only to see a better-looking limousine overtaking. This is the greatness of the immeasurable mans ability going all the way, utilizing all the intellect and resources to come up with a superb product. Though it may sound quite awkward, I strongly advocate for giving credit where it deserves. No harm in that. To wonder whether that car five minutes ago was American, English, or Japanese made would assure I do not doze behind the steering.
