Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from How to Play the Infield and the Outfield, Vol. 5: A Practical Description and Explanation of Methods for Basemen, Shortstop and Outfielders, With Team Work as the Principal Factor in Winning Games; Each Individual Must Work in Conjunction With Fellow Players Base ball playing by the infielders has changed so much within the last quarter of a century that it is better now for all beginners to be informed as to how all the infield positions should be played, and then devote themselves specially to the position which they personally decide upon. Two of the positions of the infield, namely, second base and shortstop, have so many plays alike that the only right way is to know everything possible about both places. Part of the time the shortstop acts as second baseman, and when he is acting as second baseman the latter is usually playing in a position that might be called the right field shortstop. First base is unlike any of the infield positions because so many of the players on the side at bat are put out at first base. Third base is unlike the other infield positions because so few runners get there as compared with the other bases, and also for the reason that most of the fielding plays at third base are difficult. The beginner who plays second base can play it better, however, if he knows what the fellow has to do who plays first base, shortstop and third base, and that is why all this valuable information has been placed in one volume. In fact, it is the only up-to-date manner in which the subject can be treated intelligently. Every reader is, therefore, urged to study carefully the instructions given for other positions, whether infield or outfield, as it is the best way by which he can improve the general quality of his play in his own special position. Book The Cultural Encyclopedia of Baseball 2d ed

Download or read book The Cultural Encyclopedia of Baseball 2d ed written by Jonathan Fraser Light and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2016-03-25 with total page 1112 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: More than any other sport, baseball has developed its own niche in America's culture and psyche. Some researchers spend years on detailed statistical analyses of minute parts of the game, while others wax poetic about its players and plays. Many trace the beginnings of the civil rights movement in part to the Major Leagues' decision to integrate, and the words and phrases of the game (for example, pinch-hitter and out in left field) have become common in our everyday language. From AARON, HENRY onward, this book covers all of what might be called the cultural aspects of baseball (as opposed to the number-rich statistical information so widely available elsewhere). Biographical sketches of all Hall of Fame players, owners, executives and umpires, as well as many of the sportswriters and broadcasters who have won the Spink and Frick awards, join entries for teams, owners, commissioners and league presidents. Advertising, agents, drafts, illegal substances, minor leagues, oldest players, perfect games, retired uniform numbers, superstitions, tripleheaders, and youngest players are among the thousands of entries herein. Most entries open with a topical quote and conclude with a brief bibliography of sources for further research. The whole work is exhaustively indexed and includes 119 photographs.

The first inductees were some of the greatest names of the dugout, including Ty Cobb and Babe Ruth. Less than ten years later, in 1945, the Hockey Hall of Fame inducted its first members. The Soccer Hall of Fame was established in 1950, followed by the Basketball Hall of Fame in 1959, and the Football Hall of Fame in 1963. In all, more than 1,400 inductees—players, teams, and behind the scenes personnel—have been enshrined in these five halls of fame. The Sports Hall of Fame Encyclopedia is a comprehensive listing of each inductee elected into one or more of these major sports halls of fame. From Hank Aaron to Fred Zollner, this book contains biographical information, sport and position(s) played, and career statistics (when applicable) of each of the more than 1,400 honorees. The book also includes specific appendixes for each shrine, in which inductees are listed alphabetically and by year of induction. Also included are appendixes briefly describing the history of each hall of fame.
