Book Techno Societal 2016

Download or read book Techno Societal 2016 written by Prashant M. Pawar and published by Springer. This book was released on 2017-06-16 with total page 1088 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume originates from the proceedings of a multidisciplinary conference, Techno-Societal 2016 in Maharashtra, India, that brings together faculty members of various engineering colleges to solve Indian regional relevant problems under the guidance of eminent researchers from various reputed organizations. The focus is on technologies that help develop and improve society, in particular on issues such as the betterment of differently abled people, environment impact, livelihood, rural employment, agriculture, healthcare, energy, transport, sanitation, water, education. This conference aims to help innovators to share their best practices or products developed to solve specific local problems which in turn may help the other researchers to take inspiration to solve problems in their region. On the other hand, technologies proposed by expert researchers may find applications in different regions. This back and forth process for local-global interaction will help in solving local problems by global approach and help in solving global problems by improving local conditions.

Book Management of Irrigation and Water Supply Under Climatic Extremes

Download or read book Management of Irrigation and Water Supply Under Climatic Extremes written by M. Dinesh Kumar and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2021-03-20 with total page 371 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume provides a theoretical basis for the argument that available research that analyzes the impacts of climate on hydrology, water resources, and water systems, without factoring in the effect of climate variability, are inadequate and often misleading. Also, the book empirically shows that the impacts of climate variability on hydrology and water resources, and irrigation, water supply & sanitation systems are far more pronounced than the likely impacts of future change in climate. The book discusses technological, institutional and policy alternatives for reducing these impacts on various competitive use sectors, especially, irrigation, and water supply and sanitation through case studies of river basins in different hydrological setting. To set the context, the volume first presents the long term trends in precipitation and temperature in different regions of India, and compares them against inter-annual, inter-seasonal and intra-day variations in climatic parameters, to show how their differential impacts on water resources.

Book Smallholder Irrigation Technology

Download or read book Smallholder Irrigation Technology written by Melvyn Kay and published by Food & Agriculture Org.. This book was released on 2001 with total page 52 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report is a view of irrigation technologies for smallholders in the context of improving rural livelihoods, especially in regard to the prospects for sub-Saharan Africa. The role of traditional technologies is evaluated and modern water distribution technologies, such as sprinkler and trickle irrigation, are reviewed. A broad classification has been made based on climate and the traditional agricultural background of the local people, which links technology options to specific places--to agricultural regions and to countries.

Book Pathways from irrigation to prosperity nutrition and resilience The case of smallholder irrigation in Mali

Download or read book Pathways from irrigation to prosperity nutrition and resilience The case of smallholder irrigation in Mali written by Nkonya, Ephraim M. and published by Intl Food Policy Res Inst. This book was released on 2022-07-02 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Irrigation is increasingly promoted in Africa south of the Sahara, but the benefit streams of small-scale irrigation in Mali remain largely unknown. This study collected detailed quantitative data of irrigators and non-irrigators in two regions of Mali: Mopti, which is in the Sahelian zone, and Sikasso, the southernmost region of the country, which receives more rainfall. Econometric results show that the irrigation suitability, female household headship, proximity to markets and market participation increase the propensity to irrigate. The results suggest that small-scale irrigation investments have the potential to benefit women farmers directly. We used Two-Stage Weighted treatment effects multivariate regression to identify the impact of irrigation on selected outcomes. The impact assessment results show that crop income and diversification, market participation, employment, and dietary quality were substantially higher in irrigated farms compared to non-irrigated farms. Likewise, irrigating households had higher food security and higher dietary diversity. The results show that irrigation is a key entry point for combatting climate variability and change. However, the low adoption levels of improved water-lifting technologies are a major challenge. Limited promotion of solar and motorized pumps has contributed to the low adoption of these improved water-lifting technologies. A less profitable option, lifting water with a rope-and-bucket system, remains the most common water-lifting technology in the study areas. We find that investing in effective advisory services that target agricultural water management could increase uptake of more profitable irrigation technologies.

Book Development Engineering

Download or read book Development Engineering written by William Kisaalita and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2020-08-28 with total page 307 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book details the development and evaluation of technological interventions designed to improve human and economic development within complex, low-resource settings, showing that a solution becomes an innovation when it reaches widespread use. The book shortens the time-gap between development and up-take of the intervention, especially for student solution-developers or innovators who are new to the cultural and geopolitical settings of the problem-source country or region. Technological interventions in development are sustainable if they meet a real need, are affordable by the users, fit within the cultural context and are ergonomically appropriate. Many interventions have failed because of inattentiveness to one or more of these factors. Each of the book’s points is backed up with scholarly research work, confidently guiding solution-developers confronted with issues such as acquiring intellectual property protections, among many others.
