Book Guardians of the Brazilian Amazon Rainforest Environmental Organizations and Development

Download or read book Guardians of the Brazilian Amazon Rainforest Environmental Organizations and Development written by Luiz C. Barbosa and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2015-05-08 with total page 249 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Amazon region is the focus of intense conflict between conservationists concerned with deforestation and advocates of agro-industrial development. This book focuses on the contributions of environmental organizations to the preservation of Brazilian Amazonia. It reveals how environmental organizations such as Greenpeace, Friends of the Earth, WWF and others have fought fiercely to stop deforestation in the region. It documents how the history of frontier expansion and environmental struggle in the region is linked to Brazil’s position in an evolving capitalist world-economy. It is shown how Brazil’s effort to become a developed country has led successive Brazilian governments to devise development projects for Amazonia. The author analyses how globalization has led to the expansion of international commodity chains in the region, particularly for mineral ores, soybeans and beef. He shows how environmental organizations have politicized these commodity chains as weapons of conservation, through boycotting certain products, while other pro-development groups within Brazil claim that such organizations threaten Brazil's sovereignty over its own resources.

Book The Colonization of the Amazon

Download or read book The Colonization of the Amazon written by Anna Luiza Ozorio de Almeida and published by University of Texas Press. This book was released on 2010-07-22 with total page 398 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Deforestation in the Amazon, one of today's top environmental concerns, began during a period of rapid colonization in the 1970s. Throughout that decade, Anna Luiza Ozorio de Almeida, a Stanford-trained economist, conducted a complex and massive economic study of what was going on in the Amazon, who was investing what, what was gained, and what it cost in all its aspects. The Colonization of the Amazon, the resulting work, brings together information on the physical, demographic, institutional, and economic dimensions of directed settlement in the Amazon Basin and raises significant questions about the gains and losses of the settlers, the reasons for these outcomes, and the economic rationale behind the devastation of the rainforest. Particularly illuminating is Almeida's exploration of the role of the frontier in Brazil and her distinction between types of migrants and migrations. She concludes that the political costs avoided by not undertaking agrarian reform are being paid by devastating the Amazon, with the conflict between distribution and conservation steadily worsening. Today, it can no longer be circumvented.

Book Frontier Making in the Amazon

Download or read book Frontier Making in the Amazon written by Antonio Augusto Rossotto Ioris and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2020-01-21 with total page 233 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book discusses the outcomes of more than ten years of research in the southern tracts of the Amazon region, and addresses the expansion of the agricultural frontier, consolidation of the agribusiness-based economy, and expansion of regional infrastructure (roads, dams, urban centres, etc). It combines extensive empirical evidence with the international literature on frontier-making and regional Amazonian development, and adopts a critical politico-geographical perspective that will benefit scholars in various other disciplines. This book is intended to push the current theoretical and methodological boundaries regarding the controversies and impacts of agribusiness in the region. A new international scientific network, led by the author, is investigating the broader context of the themes analysed here.

Download or read book Book Wars written by John B. Thompson and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2021-03-04 with total page 354 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book tells the story of the turbulent decades when the book publishing industry collided with the great technological revolution of our time. From the surge of ebooks to the self-publishing explosion and the growing popularity of audiobooks, Book Wars provides a comprehensive and fine-grained account of technological disruption in one of our most important and successful creative industries. Like other sectors, publishing has been thrown into disarray by the digital revolution. The foundation on which this industry had been based for 500 years – the packaging and sale of words and images in the form of printed books – was called into question by a technological revolution that enabled symbolic content to be stored, manipulated and transmitted quickly and cheaply. Publishers and retailers found themselves facing a proliferation of new players who were offering new products and services and challenging some of their most deeply held principles and beliefs. The old industry was suddenly thrust into the limelight as bitter conflicts erupted between publishers and new entrants, including powerful new tech giants who saw the world in very different ways. The book wars had begun. While ebooks were at the heart of many of these conflicts, Thompson argues that the most fundamental consequences lie elsewhere. The print-on-paper book has proven to be a remarkably resilient cultural form, but the digital revolution has transformed the industry in other ways, spawning new players which now wield unprecedented power and giving rise to an array of new publishing forms. Most important of all, it has transformed the broader information and communication environment, creating new challenges and new opportunities for publishers as they seek to redefine their role in the digital age. This unrivalled account of the book publishing industry as it faces its greatest challenge since Gutenberg will be essential reading for anyone interested in books and their future.

South America's deforestation threatens to unleash a kind of "carbon bomb" that will add to our already deteriorating climate difficulties. As he travels across Peru and Brazil, recognized South America expert Nikolas Kozloff talks to locals, scientists and activists about the rainforest and what should be done to avert its collapse. Drawing on his expertise of South American politics, Kozloff argues that cooperation between the world's countries is essential in turning back the tide of climate change and that the fate of the planet depends on our response to environmental problems within the southern hemisphere.

Anacondas, caimans, monkeys, shamans, yucca harvests, river cruises, legends and much more come to life in this amusing yet suspenseful book. Elizabeth Long, an Anthropology professor, and her group of students travel to the Amazon jungle for a study abroad trip. In this bold adventure, they encounter life as never before imagined, living with a tribe on the world’s mightiest river. The voyage takes a sudden turn when the discovery of diamonds in the area leads to a robbery. It is an event that will cause the students’ lives to converge with two elderly British tourists and two local men who work at the diamond mine, weaving them together in a race to recover the diamonds before time runs out. The book unearths the spirit of the Amazon peoples and recreates the beauty of the rainforest - the sights, smells, tastes, sounds, and dangers of this unique place. A riveting chronicle. Most entertaining is the way in which humorous tales, changing attitudes and the straddling of two very different worlds are revealed by following the visitors and natives’ days.
