Book excerpt: Written by experienced process improvement professionals who have developed and implemented systems in organizations around the world, Interpreting the CMMI®: A Process Improvement Approach provides you with specific techniques for performing process improvement using the CMMI® and the family of CMM models. Kulpa and Johnson describe the fundamental concepts of the CMMI® model - goals, practices, architecture, and definitions - in everyday language, give real-world examples, and provide a structured approach for implementing the concepts of the CMMI® into any organization. They walk you through the myriad charts and graphs involved in statistical process control and offer recommendations for which tools to use. The book covers roles and responsibilities, people issues, how to generate meaningful documentation, how to overcome resistance to change, and how to track the success of your efforts. It provides examples of plans, policies, processes, procedures, and team charters. The appendices include matrices summarizing the different assessment techniques that have now been approved by the SEI for use, "pros and cons" associated with this model, some of the myths that have arisen from the marketing of the CMMI® effort, and forms and templates. The book comes with a CD-ROM that contains forms and templates that can be downloaded and customized. The authors distill the knowledge gained in their combined 60 years of experience in project management, software engineering, systems engineering, metrics, quality assurance, configuration management, training, documentation, process improvement, and team building. Whether you are new to process improvement or an experienced professional, Interpreting the CMMI®: A Process Improvement Approach saves you time wasted on false starts, false promises by marketers, and failed deadlines.

Book Implementing the Capability Maturity Model

Download or read book Implementing the Capability Maturity Model written by James R. Persse and published by Wiley. This book was released on 2001-08-27 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Practical guidelines for an effective implementation of software development processes Designed to ensure effective software development processes, the Capability Maturity Model (CMM)--North America's leading standard for software development--requires companies to complete five steps, or levels, in the development process. But while it is widely adopted by Fortune 500 companies, many others get stuck at the initial planning stage. Focusing on Levels 2 and 3 of the CMM, this book helps readers to get over the hurdle of the two most problematic areas in this process--the project management and software development steps. It offers clear, step-by-step guidance on how to establish basic project management processes to track costs, schedules, and functionality; how to document, standardize, and integrate software processes; and how to improve software quality.

Book Coordinated Management of Meaning CMM

Download or read book Coordinated Management of Meaning CMM written by Natasha a Rascon and published by . This book was released on 2017-08-31 with total page 82 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Coordinated Management of Meaning (CMM): A Research Manual consists of the work of Barnett Pearce, Vernon Cronen, and their colleagues over the past 40 years. The theory offers a rich set of ideas for understanding communication processes. Still dedicated to ways in which people coordinate interaction and construct meaning, the theory offers fresh ways of examining human social life. This manual provides a brief, clear, and useful set of tools for CMM research. Although this booklet does provide a short introduction to the theory, it assumes some background in CMM theory and is designed for CMMers who want a clearer picture of how to conduct research in this tradition. Of particular importance in this endeavor is maintaining a communication perspective to ensure that researchers focus on the communication processes, rather than look through it to something else. To achieve this goal, researchers can describe the process, interpret communication events, provide critique, and assert action plans. The framing of research questions is especially important in maintaining a communication perspective. Research tools are organized into the categories of description, interpretation, critique and action. In addition, the CMM consulting method known as SEAVA is translated into research processes that involve storyboarding, enriching stories, analyzing interaction, visioning, and acting.

Book The Capability Maturity Model

Download or read book The Capability Maturity Model written by Mark C. Paulk and published by Addison-Wesley Professional. This book was released on 1995 with total page 472 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Principal Contributors and Editors: Mark C. Paulk, Charles V. Weber, Bill Curtis, Mary Beth Chrissis "In every sense, the CMM represents the best thinking in the field today... this book is targeted at anyone involved in improving the software process, including members of assessment or evaluation teams, members of software engineering process groups, software managers, and software practitioners..." From the Foreword by Watts Humphrey The Capability Maturity Model for Software (CMM) is a framework that demonstrates the key elements of an effective software process. The CMM describes an evolutionary improvement path for software development from an ad hoc, immature process to a mature, disciplined process, in a path laid out in five levels. When using the CMM, software professionals in government and industry can develop and improve their ability to identify, adopt, and use sound management and technical practices for delivering quality software on schedule and at a reasonable cost. This book provides a description and technical overview of the CMM, along with guidelines for improving software process management overall. It is a sequel to Watts Humphrey's important work, Managing the Software Process, in that it structures the maturity framework presented in that book more formally. Features: Compares the CMM with ISO 9001 Provides an overview of ISO's SPICE project, which is developing international standards for software process improvement and capability determination Presents a case study of IBM Houston's Space Shuttle project, which is frequently referred to as being at Level 5 0201546647B04062001

Book Process Improvement in Quality Management Systems

Download or read book Process Improvement in Quality Management Systems written by Walter R. McCollum and published by Trafford Publishing. This book was released on 2004 with total page 115 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Foreword After more than two decades since the advent of Total Quality Management, one might think there was nothing left to say regarding its application, but Walter Ray McCollum shows that one would be wrong. Process Improvement in Quality Management Systems: Case Study of Carnegie Mellon's Capability Maturity Model (CMM) explores how a company can obtain Level 3 compliance where an organization's processes for management and engineering activities are formally defined, documented, and integrated into a standard process that is understood and followed by the organization's staff in the development and maintenance of software. Once an organization has reached this level, it has a foundation for continuing progress. New processes and tools can be added with minimal disruption, and new staff members can be easily trained to adapt to the organization's practices. Numerous case studies have been enacted across industries to describe successful, and unsuccessful, implementation of quality management systems and programs. Several generic frameworks for quality management implementation have been proposed to help organizations achieve quality, productivity, and gain a competitive edge. However, few attempts have been made to synthesize frameworks for measuring quality management practices, especially with regard to managing software quality. Phan (2001) found the best-known work concerned with process improvement was the Software Engineering Institute Capability Maturity Model (CMM). However, very few studies have examined the effects of process improvement on quality management systems, and no studies have addressed the variables that impact the effective use of SW-CMM. McCollom mitigates these gaps to offer software development professionals, and developers of quality management systems, the information they need to enhance their effective use of SW-CMM. This book empowers projects, teams, and organizations by giving them the foundation to support reasoned choice, and identify fi ndings relative to the effects of process improvement in quality management systems using SW-CMM, process focus, and risk management training. Book Mixed Mode Modelling Mixing Methodologies For Organisational Intervention

Download or read book Mixed Mode Modelling Mixing Methodologies For Organisational Intervention written by M.G. Nicholls and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2001-10-31 with total page 346 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The 1980s and 1990s have seen a growing interest in research and practice in the use of methodologies within problem contexts characterised by a primary focus on technology, human issues, or power. During the last five to ten years, this has given rise to challenges regarding the ability of a single methodology to address all such contexts, and the consequent development of approaches which aim to mix methodologies within a single problem situation. This has been particularly so where the situation has called for a mix of technological (the so-called 'hard') and human centred (so-called 'soft') methods. The approach developed has been termed mixed-mode modelling. The area of mixed-mode modelling is relatively new, with the phrase being coined approximately four years ago by Brian Lehaney in a keynote paper published at the 1996 Annual Conference of the UK Operational Research Society. Mixed-mode modelling, as suggested above, is a new way of considering problem situations faced by organisations. Traditional technological approaches used in management science have suffered criticisms relating to their adequacy in the past few decades, and these hard approaches have been replaced by soft methods, which consider process more relevant than outcome. However, the sole use of human centred approaches to organisational problems has also proved to be inadequate. Mixed-mode modelling accepts the importance of both process and outcome, and provides enabling mechanisms for hard and soft investigation to be undertaken.
