Download or read book The Master Plan written by Chris Wilson and published by Penguin. This book was released on 2019-02-05 with total page 434 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The inspiring, instructive, and ultimately triumphant memoir of a man who used hard work and a Master Plan to turn a life sentence into a second chance. Growing up in a tough Washington, D.C., neighborhood, Chris Wilson was so afraid for his life he wouldn't leave the house without a gun. One night, defending himself, he killed a man. At eighteen, he was sentenced to life in prison with no hope of parole. But what should have been the end of his story became the beginning. Deciding to make something of his life, Chris embarked on a journey of self-improvement--reading, working out, learning languages, even starting a business. He wrote his Master Plan: a list of all he expected to accomplish or acquire. He worked his plan every day for years, and in his mid-thirties he did the impossible: he convinced a judge to reduce his sentence and became a free man. Today Chris is a successful social entrepreneur who employs returning citizens; a mentor; and a public speaker. He is the embodiment of second chances, and this is his unforgettable story.

Download or read book Strategic Security written by Jean Perois and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2019-05-08 with total page 223 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Strategic Security will help security managers, and those aspiring to the position, to think strategically about their job, the culture of their workplace, and the nature of security planning and implementation. Security professionals tend to focus on the immediate (the urgent) rather than the important and essential—too often serving as "firefighters" rather than strategists. This book will help professionals consider their roles, and structure their tasks through a strategic approach without neglecting their career objectives. Few security management books for professionals in the field focus on corporate or industrial security from a strategic perspective. Books on the market normally provide "recipes," methods or guidelines to develop, plans, policies or procedures. However, many do so without taking into account the personal element that is supposed to apply these methods. In this book, the authors helps readers to consider their own career development in parallel with establishing their organisation security programme. This is fundamental to becoming, and serving as, a quality, effective manager. The element of considering career objectives as part-and-parcel to this is both unique to only this book and vital for long-term career success. The author delineates what makes strategic thinking different in a corporate and security environment. While strategy is crucial in the running of a company, the traditional attitude towards security is that it has to fix issues quickly and at low cost. This is an attitude that no other department would tolerate, but because of its image, security departments sometimes have major issues with buy-in and from top-management. The book covers the necessary level of strategic thinking to put their ideas into practice. Once this is achieved, the strategic process is explained, including the need to build the different steps into this process—and into the overarching business goals of the organisation—will be demonstrated. The book provides numerous hand-on examples of how to formulate and execute the strategic master plan for the organization. The authors draws on his extensive experience and successes to serve as a valuable resource to all security professionals looking to advance their careers in the field.
Download or read book Risk Management Series Incremental Protection for Existing Commercial Buildings from Terrorist Attack written by Federal Emergency Agency and published by FEMA. This book was released on 2013-01-27 with total page 170 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) developed FEMA 459, Incremental Protection for Existing Commercial Buildings from Terrorist Attack, to provide guidance to owners of existing commercial buildings and their architects and engineers on security and operational enhancements to address vulnerabilities to explosive blasts and chemical, biological, and radiological hazards. It also addresses how to integrate these enhancements into the ongoing building maintenance and capital improvement programs. These enhancements are intended to mitigate or eliminate long-term risk to people and property. FEMA's Risk Management Series publications addressing security risks are based on two core documents: FEMA 426, Reference Manual to Mitigate Potential Terrorist Attacks Against buildings, and FEMA 452, Risk Assessment: A How-To Guide to Mitigate Potential Terrorist Attacks Against Buildings. FEMA 426 provides guidance to the building science community of architects and engineers on reducing physical damage caused by terrorist assaults to buildings, related infrastructure, and people. FEMA 452 outlines methods for identifying the critical assets and functions within buildings, determining the potential threats to those assets, and assessing the building's vulnerabilities to those threats. This assessment of risks facilitates hazard mitigation decision-making. Specifically, the document addresses methods for reducing physical damage to structural and nonstructural components of buildings and related infrastructure and reducing resultant casualties during conventional bomb attacks, as well as attacks involving chemical, biological, and radiological agents. FEMA 459 can be used in conjunction with FEMA 452. This manual presents an integrated, incremental rehabilitation approach to implementing the outcomes of a risk assessment completed in accordance with FEMA 452, Risk Assessment: A How-To Guide to Mitigate Potential Terrorist Attacks Against Building. This approach is intended to minimize disruption to building operations and control costs for existing commercial buildings. The integrated incremental approach to risk reduction in buildings was initially developed in relation to seismic risk and was first articulated in FEMA's Risk Management Series in the widely disseminated FEMA 395, Incremental Seismic Rehabilitation of School Buildings (K-12), published in June 2003. In 2004 and 2005, FEMA also published Incremental Seismic Rehabilitation manuals (FEMA 396-400) for hospitals, office buildings, multifamily apartments, retail buildings, and hotels and motels. This manual outlines an approach to incremental security enhancement in four types of existing commercial buildings: office buildings, retail buildings, multifamily apartment buildings, and hotel and motel buildings. It addresses both physical and operational enhancements that reduce building vulnerabilities to blasts and chemical, biological, and radiological attacks, within the constraints of the existing site conditions and building configurations.

Download or read book Addressing Uncertainty about Future Airport Activity Levels in Airport Decision Making written by Ian S. Kincaid and published by Transportation Research Board. This book was released on 2012 with total page 147 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report provides a guidebook on how to develop air traffic forecasts in the face of a broad range of uncertainties. It is targeted at airport operators, planners, designers, and other stakeholders involved in planning, managing, and financing of airports, and it provides a systems analysis methodology that augments standard master planning and strategic planning approaches. This methodology includes a set of tools for improving the understanding and application of risk and uncertainty in air traffic forecasts as well as for increasing overall effectiveness of airport planning and decision making. In developing the guidebook, the research team studied existing methods used in traditional master planning as well as methods that directly address risk and uncertainty, and based on that fundamental research, they created a straightforward and transparent systems analysis methodology for expanding and improving traditional planning practices, applicable through a wide range of airport sizes. The methods presented were tested through a series of case study applications that also helped to identify additional opportunities for future research and long-term enhancements.
