Book Constructing Low Rise Confined Masonry Buildings

Download or read book Constructing Low Rise Confined Masonry Buildings written by Tom Schacher and published by . This book was released on 2018-01-15 with total page 180 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "In many of the most earthquake-prone areas of the world, low-rise houses, built by masons without formal training or self-built, are vulnerable to collapse. This guide focuses on the confined masonry technique which offers excellent results of earthquake resistance in countries where it is part of the building code. They have been developed by practitioners rather than by engineers, and therefore respond well to the technical and financial capacities of small-scale contractors and self-builders. Confined masonry uses the same materials as the widely used reinforced-concrete frame technique, but in a different sequence, making the system more simple and forgiving. Constructing Low-rise Confined Masonry Buildings describes these techniques with clear and concise instructions. Punctuated regularly with illustrations and photos throughout, this guide carefully describes basic rules for the selection of safe building sites and for house layouts, whilst giving detailed instructions on the construction process. Photos include examples to highlight both safe and unsafe practices paired with clear explanations. The guide gives indications on practical detailing of confined masonry but also includes basic information on good construction practice in general. This is an essential handbook for building technicians, construction managers, architects and students of architecture and civil engineering in areas regularly affected by earthquakes or for those following practical training on confined masonry building sites"--

Book excerpt: "Across the globe, a consensus is emerging on the central importance of risk information in disaster risk management. When risks are quantified and the potential impacts of hazards are anticipated, governments, communities, and individuals are able to make more informed decisions. This publication highlights some of the influential efforts—by technical specialists, institutions, and governments around the world—to create and communicate risk information quickly and at low cost, to improve the quality and transparency of risk information, and to enable more local engagement in the production of authoritative risk information than ever before. Case studies spanning 40 countries and contributed by more than 50 institutions showcase emerging best practices, demonstrate how risk assessments are being used to inform disaster risk management and broader development, and highlight lessons learned through these efforts. Book Transcending Humanitarian Engineering Strategies for Sustainable Futures

Download or read book Transcending Humanitarian Engineering Strategies for Sustainable Futures written by Koumpouros, Yiannis and published by IGI Global. This book was released on 2023-03-13 with total page 355 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Engineering disciplines have a pivotal role to play in the solution of global humanitarian challenges, enabling our society to take steps towards sustainable human development. Engineering can be used as the catalyst for the change that the world needs; from water supply to renewable energy provision, engineering knowledge and application underpin the responses needed for us all to pursue a sustainable future. Because the issue of humanitarianism is not just engineering problems, there is a need to engage with professionals, breakdown previously siloed approaches and obdurate practices, and introduce interdisciplinary education and training to enhance combinational expertise. Transcending Humanitarian Engineering Strategies for Sustainable Futures provides relevant theoretical frameworks and the latest empirical research findings in the area of humanitarian engineering as a means for future-proofing our communities. Covering topics such as disaster mitigation, natural hazards, and land use change, this premier reference source is an excellent resource for engineers, environmentalists, sociologists, anthropologists, urban planners, government officials, students and educators of higher education, non-profit organizations, researchers, and academicians.

Book Confined Masonry for Seismically Resilient Low cost Housing in India

Download or read book Confined Masonry for Seismically Resilient Low cost Housing in India written by Christopher F. Porst and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page 94 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Confined masonry (CM) is a viable housing typology that is resilient and economical for developing countries in seismic regions. Given its suitability for low-tech environments, multiple authors have published instructions on CM construction that do not require engineering knowledge. As a result these guidelines impose constrictive design requirements. Analysis methods exist for calculating the stress demand on shear walls of a CM building under earthquake loads which may be applied to any design, but they require technical expertise to perform. A procedure for designing confined masonry buildings is presented that employs a combination of seismic analysis techniques to take into account torsional effects and allow for complex designs while requiring low computational effort. Parametric studies are performed on this procedure which show reliable, conservative structural design outputs. Confined masonry is a structural wall system, therefore its seismic resilience depends on the wall shear strength, which is related to the compressive strength of the masonry. In India bricks used to build homes are often of poor compressive strength, even lower than the minimum allowed by the Indian masonry code, which is lower than that prescribed in other international standards. Experimentation was conducted on the strength of masonry in Gujarat, India to investigate the effect of varying mortar qualities when low strength bricks are used. With average brick strengths below 2.5 MPa a mud mortar with no cement and a 1:8 cement:sand ratio mortar resulted in approximately 41% and 21% higher prism strengths, respectively, than a 1:6 cement:sand ratio mortar. This shows that a mortar with less cement would save cost and result in a more resilient structure when building with bricks of this strength. Observations and hypotheses are presented for this behavior, but larger scale testing is recommended to better understand this outcome and inform better building practices that can save lives and money.

Book Earthquake Resistant Confined Masonary Construction

Download or read book Earthquake Resistant Confined Masonary Construction written by Svetlana Brzev and published by . This book was released on 2007 with total page 81 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This monograph is written for building professionals interested in learning more about confined masonry construction and for those who would like to promote its application in countries with high earthquake risk. Confined masonry has evolved over the last hundred years through an informal process based on its satisfactory performance in past earthquakes in countries and regions of extremely high seismic risk. It is used both for non-engineered and engineered construction; its field applications range from one- and two-storey single-family dwellings to six-storey apartment buildings.

Book The Cure for Catastrophe

    Book Details:
  • Author : Robert Muir-Wood
  • Publisher : Basic Books
  • Release : 2016-09-06
  • ISBN : 0465096476
  • Pages : 370 pages

Download or read book The Cure for Catastrophe written by Robert Muir-Wood and published by Basic Books. This book was released on 2016-09-06 with total page 370 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We can't stop natural disasters but we can stop them being disastrous. One of the world's foremost risk experts tells us how. Year after year, floods wreck people's homes and livelihoods, earthquakes tear communities apart, and tornadoes uproot whole towns. Natural disasters cause destruction and despair. But does it have to be this way? In The Cure for Catastrophe, global risk expert Robert Muir-Wood argues that our natural disasters are in fact human ones: We build in the wrong places and in the wrong way, putting brick buildings in earthquake country, timber ones in fire zones, and coastal cities in the paths of hurricanes. We then blindly trust our flood walls and disaster preparations, and when they fail, catastrophes become even more deadly. No society is immune to the twin dangers of complacency and heedless development. Recognizing how disasters are manufactured gives us the power to act. From the Great Lisbon Earthquake of 1755 to Hurricane Katrina, The Cure for Catastrophe recounts the ingenious ways in which people have fought back against disaster. Muir-Wood shows the power and promise of new predictive technologies, and envisions a future where information and action come together to end the pain and destruction wrought by natural catastrophes. The decisions we make now can save millions of lives in the future. Buzzing with political plots, newfound technologies, and stories of surprising resilience, The Cure for Catastrophe will revolutionize the way we conceive of catastrophes: though natural disasters are inevitable, the death and destruction are optional. As we brace ourselves for deadlier cataclysms, the cure for catastrophe is in our hands.
