Book The Seven Principles for Making Marriage Work

Download or read book The Seven Principles for Making Marriage Work written by John Gottman, Ph.D. and published by Harmony. This book was released on 2002-02-04 with total page 306 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Just as Masters and Johnson were pioneers in the study of human sexuality, so Dr. John Gottman has revolutionized the study of marriage. As a professor of psychology at the University of Washington and the founder and director of the Seattle Marital and Family Institute, he has studied the habits of married couples in unprecedented detail over the course of many years. His findings, and his heavily attended workshops, have already turned around thousands of faltering marriages. This book is the culmination of his life's work: the seven principles that guide couples on the path toward a harmonious and long-lasting relationship. Straightforward in their approach, yet profound in their effect, these principles teach partners new and startling strategies for making their marriage work. Gottman helps couples focus on each other, on paying attention to the small day-to-day moments that, strung together, make up the heart and soul of any relationship. Being thoughtful about ordinary matters provides spouses with a solid foundation for resolving conflict when it does occur and finding strategies for living with those issues that cannot be resolved. Packed with questionnaires and exercises whose effectiveness has been proven in Dr. Gottman's workshops, The Seven Principles for Making Marriage Work is the definitive guide for anyone who wants their relationship to attain its highest potential. The Seven Principles for Making Marriage Work is the result of Dr. John Gottman's many years of closely observing thousands of marriages. This kind of longitudinal research has never been done before. Based on his findings, he has culled seven principles essential to the success of any marriage. Maintain a love map. Foster fondness and admiration. Turn toward instead of away. Accept influence. Solve solvable conflicts. Cope with conflicts you can't resolve. Create shared meaning. Dr. Gottman's unique questionnaires and exercises will guide couples on the road to revitalizing their marriage, or making a strong one even better.

Book Understanding Marriage Family and Intimate Relationships

Download or read book Understanding Marriage Family and Intimate Relationships written by Jerry D. Lehman and published by Charles C Thomas Publisher. This book was released on 2005 with total page 397 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This introductory textbook is for students who are interested in learning about and establishing healthy marriage, family, and intimate relationships. With divorce rates high and relationships fragile, books and courses are needed that help students address important issues regarding relationships. The readers of this text examine many important and relevant issues through the lens of theory and research and do so using a written format that is readable, understandable, and easy to apply to oneís life. It was written so that each chapter has information that readers will find helpful as they attempt to establish and maintain meaningful, healthy relationships. There are questions throughout each chapter that help readers focus not only on the material but also on how the material relates to their present and past relationship and family situations. The text provides material on the research of John Gottman, the object relations theory of Harville Hendrix, the solution- focused approach of Michele Weiner-Davis, and the PREP approach to conflict management of Markman, Stanley, and Blumberg. These and other topics discussed are very relevant to studentsí concerns and are addressed in greater depth than found in most other texts. The emphasis is not just on couple relationships but also on family relationships. Therefore, in this book there is extensive coverage of family systems theory and the influence of family rules and family structure on the development of families. There is also material on how change produces transitions in family life that must be assimilated into the family structureófor example, when a couple has their first child. Thus, both couple and family issues are addressed throughout the book. For instructors who want to focus their courses on marriage, family, and intimate relationships, this book would be an ideal choice. Book LADY LEADER LEAVES LASTING LEGACY

Download or read book LADY LEADER LEAVES LASTING LEGACY written by Alice Astafan and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2023-11-08 with total page 311 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is the story of my life, a lady who grew up on a small farm in the Deep South, and how I was able to reach the top of my career field, serving as a two-star general at the Pentagon. Women have served, both in and out of uniform, in defense of this country since the beginning of our nation. Serving the United States Air Force in uniform was my career choice. This book is an outgrowth of the review of publicity surrounding my military career, both active and reserves, and follow-on civilian career, and of the inventory of the more than 100 speeches I gave when I reached the top of my career field. Audiences in the 1980s and 90s were surprised to learn of the original roadblocks, both laws and policies, which precluded me, a woman, from setting goals at the beginning of my military journey in 1960 to reach the level to which I finally achieved during my career in uniform. All I had when in uniform were male mentors, because there were no females to which I could look for guidance and success stories. Indeed, my accomplishments led to the glass ceiling being opened wide for the other ladies who came after me and were recognized for their ability and talents to serve and excel at higher levels of leadership. Friends who know of my accomplishments implored me to put pen to paper to show how I, as a young girl could —with hard work, tenacity, stick-to-it-iveness and using lessons learned in early years —propel myself to the forefront, leading to success. Come with me as I take you back to the beginning, to my first role models: my mother and father who set examples for me and taught me lessons that would propel me even further than a little 1940's farm girl from Oakman, Alabama could have imagined. I hope you'll be inspired to see where my dreams took me, finding love, heartbreak, adventure and prestige along the way.

Book Making Marriage Simple

Download or read book Making Marriage Simple written by Harville Hendrix and published by Harmony. This book was released on 2014-04-01 with total page 210 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Change the relationship you have into the one you want. Welcome to the Relationship Revolution! Making Marriage Simple is the accessible, essential road map to building a strong marriage in the modern world. Bestselling authors Harville Hendrix and Helen LaKelly Hunt distill into ten essential truths what they've learned about how to create a successful and satisfying relationship—both from their decades of “R&D” in the marriage lab of their workshops, and from their own relationship journey. In each chapter, Harville and Helen introduce a simple truth—such as “a frustration is a wish in disguise,” “incompatibility is grounds for marriage,” or “conflict is growth trying to happen”—and then walk couples through easy yet effective exercises to help them apply each truth in real life, every day. Harville and Helen have spent their careers helping couples transform their marriages through research, workshops, and counseling. But marriage—even for marriage experts—is never easy, and a number of years ago they found themselves on the brink of divorce. Harville and Helen put themselves back through the exercises they’d coached so many other couples through, saving their marriage and helping them achieve a true partnership. This book is for all couples. It offers the practical tools needed to transform one’s relationship into a rewarding and joyous marriage. Written with humor, compassion, and honesty, and illustrated throughout with engaging line drawings, Making Marriage Simple is a strategic blueprint for creating a stronger, more satisfying partnership in today's world.
