Book Television broadcasting in Northern Ireland

Download or read book Television broadcasting in Northern Ireland written by Great Britain: Parliament: House of Commons: Northern Ireland Affairs Committee and published by The Stationery Office. This book was released on 2010-01-26 with total page 146 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It has become apparent that Northern Ireland feels left behind in UK broadcasting terms. Levels of production are comparatively low. Northern Ireland producers find it difficult to win commissions from the UK's major broadcast organisations. Digital switchover, already under way in some parts of the UK will not occur in Northern Ireland until 2012. Nor, since UTV remains strong enough to provide news in competition with the BBC, will Northern Ireland benefit from public money proposed for new independently funded news consortia. The evidence the Committee received confirms and demonstrates that Northern Ireland is the least well served of the UK's four nations in terms of network production that reflects and portrays its life and in the amount of network programming produced there. The Committee makes a number of recommendations to remedy this.

Book The Irish Language in Northern Ireland

Download or read book The Irish Language in Northern Ireland written by Camille C. O'Reilly and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-07-27 with total page 228 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A topical and authoritative investigation of the Irish language and identity in Northern Ireland. The phrase 'our own language' has come to symbolize the importance of the Irish language to Irish identity for many Nationalists in Northern Ireland. However, different interests compete to have their version of the meaning and importance of the Irish language accepted. This book investigates the role of the Irish language movement in the social construction of competing versions of Irish political and cultural identity in Northern Ireland, arguing that for some Nationalists, the Irish language has become an alternative point of political access and expression.

Book New View of the Irish Language

Download or read book New View of the Irish Language written by Caoilfhionn Nic Phaidin and published by Cois Life. This book was released on 2008-04-01 with total page 287 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The 1871 census came to the stark conclusion that 'within relatively few years' Irish would cease to exist. Yet, over a century later, Irish became the twenty-third officially recognized language of the European Union in 2007. To believe the census returns of recent years, Irish is in a state of rude health. But is this true when half a million people claim to speak Irish, but seldom actually speak it? In the traditional Gaeltacht areas, Irish is in peril - whilst it flourishes in Gaelscoileanna, in urban areas and in cyberspace. What do these dramatic shifts mean for the language's future?A New View of the Irish Language covers issues such as language and national identity; the impact of emigration and immigration; music, literature and the media; the importance of place-names; teaching and learning Irish; attitudes towards Irish; and the state of the Gaeltacht - and probes beyond the statistics and rhetoric to explore the true situation of Irish in the contemporary world.Contributors: Ruair hUiginn, Pdraig Riagin, Liam Mac Mathna, Mirn Nic Eoin, Liam Muirthile, Gearid Tuathaigh, John Harris, Breandn Delap, Conchr Giollagin & Seosamh Mac Donnacha, Caoilfhionn Nic Phidn, Pdraig Laighin, Lillis Laoire, Anna N Ghallachair, Ciarn Mac Murchaidh, Brian Conchubhair, Aidan Doyle, Aidan Punch, Suzanne Romaine, Dnall Mac Giolla Easpaig and Iarfhlaith Watson.

Book Irish Media

Download or read book Irish Media written by John Horgan and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2012-11-12 with total page 228 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Irish Media: A Critical History maps the landscape of media in Ireland from the foundation of the modern state in 1922 to the present. Covering all principal media forms, print and electronic, in the Republic and in Northern Ireland, John Horgan shows how Irish history and politics have shaped the media of Ireland and, in turn, have been shaped by them. Beginning in a country ravaged by civil war, it traces the complexities of wartime censorship and details the history of media technology, from the development of radio to the inauguration of television in the 1950s and 1960s. It covers the birth, development and - sometimes - the death of major Irish media during this period, examining the reasons for failure and success, and government attempts to regulate and respond to change. Finally, it addresses questions of media globalisation, ownership and control, and looks at issues of key significance for the future. Horgan demonstrates why, in a country whose political divisions and economic development have given it a place on the world stage out of all proportion to its size, the media have been and remain key players in Irish history.

Book Language and Education in Multilingual Settings

Download or read book Language and Education in Multilingual Settings written by Bernard Spolsky and published by Multilingual Matters. This book was released on 1986 with total page 212 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The difference between languages that children learn in the home (their mother tongues) and the languages valued by society and established as the medium of instruction in schools is an almost universal problem in educational systems. Proposals for mother tongue education, for bilingual programmes of various kinds, or for more effective teaching of literary or standard languages all depend on an understanding of the underlying problem of language education in multilingual settings. The writers of Language and Education in Multilingual Settings do not have a single view of the issues, for they are international in background and experience, and interdisciplinary in training and approach; moreover, as will be clear, they differ in political and philosophical beliefs, in scholarly rhetoric, in research paradigms and in personal circumstances. In this book, researchers from India, Yugoslavia, the USSR, the USA, New Zealand, Zambia, Denmark, Australia, and Israel discuss practice and theory in various parts of the world.
