Download or read book Eileen written by Sylvia Topp and published by Unbound Publishing. This book was released on 2020-03-05 with total page 514 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the never-before-told story of George Orwell's first wife, Eileen, a woman who shaped, supported, and even saved the life of one of the twentieth century's greatest writers. In 1934, Eileen O'Shaughnessy's futuristic poem, 'End of the Century, 1984', was published. The next year, she would meet George Orwell, then known as Eric Blair, at a party. 'Now that is the kind of girl I would like to marry!' he remarked that night. Years later, Orwell would name his greatest work, Nineteen Eighty-Four, in homage to the memory of Eileen, the woman who shaped his life and his art in ways that have never been acknowledged by history, until now. From the time they spent in a tiny village tending goats and chickens, through the Spanish Civil War, to the couple's narrow escape from the destruction of their London flat during a German bombing raid, and their adoption of a baby boy, Eileen is the first account of the Blairs' nine-year marriage. It is also a vivid picture of bohemianism, political engagement, and sexual freedom in the 1930s and '40s. Through impressive depth of research, illustrated throughout with photos and images from the time, this captivating and inspiring biography offers a completely new perspective on Orwell himself, and most importantly tells the life story of an exceptional woman who has been unjustly overlooked.

Download or read book Freedom and the Cage written by Leslie Topp and published by Penn State Press. This book was released on 2017-03-28 with total page 642 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Spurred by ideals of individual liberty that took hold in the Western world in the late nineteenth century, psychiatrists and public officials sought to reinvent asylums as large-scale, totally designed institutions that offered a level of freedom and normality impossible in the outside world. This volume explores the “caged freedom” that this new psychiatric ethos represented by analyzing seven such buildings established in the Austro-Hungarian monarchy between the late 1890s and World War I. In the last two decades of the Habsburg Empire, architects of asylums began to abandon traditional corridor-based plans in favor of looser formations of connected villas, echoing through design the urban- and freedom-oriented impulse of the progressive architecture of the time. Leslie Topp considers the paradoxical position of designs that promoted an illusion of freedom even as they exercised careful social and spatial control over patients. In addition to discussing the physical and social aspects of these institutions, Topp shows how the commissioned buildings were symptomatic of larger cultural changes and of the modern asylum’s straining against its ideological anchorage in a premodern past of “unenlightened” restraint on human liberty. Working at the intersection of the history of architecture and the history of psychiatry, Freedom and the Cage broadens our understanding of the complexity and fluidity of modern architecture’s engagement with the state, with social and medical projects, and with mental health, psychiatry, and psychology.

Download or read book The Odyssey of a U boat Commander written by Erich Topp and published by Praeger. This book was released on 1992-07-13 with total page 270 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Admiral Topp's memoirs reflect the faith, hopes, errors, and transformations in a man's life, indeed those of a whole generation whose understanding of history and ideology were held captive by the myth of power. The terrible annihilation in World War II and, even more so, the unimaginable destructive potential of nuclear weapons, have resulted in a change in the use of power. The author's diaries and journals, along with their contemporary interpretation, illustrate the political dimension of this change. Topp wrote this book to illuminate a segment of twentieth century history which can only be portrayed truthfully by those who themselves have lived and suffered through it. Topp also describes freely the era of the Third Reich. Even today, after long years of occupying positions of leadership, the author feels the burden of historical responsibility. In this sense his book is a statement about the ambivalence of human existence. It provides answers to the question of why a whole generation of Germans followed the mesmerizing siren song of a totalitarian regime, an experience which still looms like a shadow over the living.

This book was released on 2004-06-21 with total page 250 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Leslie Topp investigates how "truth" in Viennese architecture at the turn of the twentieth century could be interpreted in a variety of ways, including "truth" to purpose, symbolist or ideal "truth", and ethical notions of authenticity. Drawing on newly uncovered archival materials, Topp offers a new interpretation of familiar buildings, demonstrating how they encompass utopianism, hyper-rationality, and subjectivism. She also explores the relationship between Viennese modern architecture and contemporary painting, psychiatry, fashion, labor issues, and anti-Semitic politics.
Download or read book Letters from Lee written by Larayne M. Topp and published by CreateSpace. This book was released on 2014-07-30 with total page 176 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A soldier's experiences in times of war are as varied and filled with impact as the cause he or she fights to defend. The collection of soldier memories in Letters from Lee: One Man's Story of Vietnam are those of one man, Lee Heckman, who took up arms during the Vietnam War. It's been more than 40 years since Lee Heckman was called upon to fight that war. Although he has spent the years since in a peace-filled Nebraska town, his nights have been anything but. The effects of posttraumatic stress disorder have brought the war back to him in waves as deep as the South China Sea, couched in dreaded nightmares, panic attacks and flashbacks. The letters from Lee contained in this book were written to a girlfriend back home during the days of a young man's life when all he longed for were a fast car, a girl on his arm and a cold beer. These dreams were crushed by an Army ticket to a tropical country in Southeast Asia. Lee's letters, written from the viewpoint of an H-13 Loach helicopter during the terror of war, are mix with Heckman's memories in a look back at the war from a perspective of four decades. Whether you are a seasoned veteran or can't locate Vietnam on a world map, you'll find Letters from Lee to be a sometimes irreverent but always honest story of Vietnam.
