Usually, these changes allows for the adolescent to explore and establish an identity, also known as identity achievement (Kroger & Marcia, 2011). In addition, they are also experiencing dopaminergic changes leading to an increase in sensation seeking, as well as forming their prefrontal cortex (Steingberg, 2008 and Romer, 2010). Overall, these changes can make adolescents susceptible to risk-taking behaviors. Religion and spirituality provide the adolescent with different ways to connect with the sacred and help them discover their sense of meaning in the world (Hill et al., 2000 and Benson & Roehlkepartian, 2008). Overall, positively affecting the well-being of an adolescent. Thus, the purpose of this systematic literature review is to investigate how religion and/or spirituality can prevent adolescents from engaging in risky behaviors, specifically delinquency, substance use, suicide, and sexual risky behaviors. This systematic literature review consisted of 22 studies that focused on how religion and/or spirituality can prevent adolescents from engaging in risky behaviors. In conclusion, the literature review found that the level of importance of religion to the adolescent, attending religious services, and religious activities (e.g. youth groups) decreased the effect of engaging in risky behaviors (Adamczyk, 2012; Chu, 2007; Fletcher & Kumar, 2014; Desmond, Kikuchi, & Budd, 2010; Desmond, Ulmer, & Bader, 2013; Longest & Vaisey, 2008; Salas-Wright, Vaughn, Hodge, & Perron, 2012; Sinha, Cnann & Gelles, 2007; Ulmer, Desmond, Jang & Johnson, 2012). Other factors of significance were found to be the perceived importance of spiritual believes, spiritual and existential well-being, attending spiritual events, and having spiritual experiences (e.g. meditation or prayer) (Cotton, Larkin, Hoopes, Cromer, & Rosenthal, 2005; Sussman et a., 2005).

Very few such efforts pay serious attention to the role of religion and spirituality in the lives of American adolescents. But many teenagers are very involved in religion. Surveys reveal that 35% attend religious services weekly and another 15% attend at least monthly. 60% say that religious faith is important in their lives. 40% report that they pray daily. 25% say that they have been "born again." Teenagers feel good about the congregations they belong to. Some say that faith provides them with guidance and resources for knowing how to live well. What is going on in the religious and spiritual lives of American teenagers? What do they actually believe? What religious practices do they engage in? Do they expect to remain loyal to the faith of their parents? Or are they abandoning traditional religious institutions in search of a new, more authentic "spirituality"? This book attempts to answer these and related questions as definitively as possible. It reports the findings of The National Study of Youth and Religion, the largest and most detailed such study ever undertaken. The NYSR conducted a nationwide telephone survey of teens and significant caregivers, as well as nearly 300 in-depth face-to-face interviews with a sample of the population that was surveyed. The results show that religion and spirituality are indeed very significant in the lives of many American teenagers. Among many other discoveries, they find that teenagers are far more influenced by the religious beliefs and practices of their parents and caregivers than commonly thought. They refute the conventional wisdom that teens are "spiritual but not religious." And they confirm that greater religiosity is significantly associated with more positive adolescent life outcomes. This eagerly-awaited volume not only provides an unprecedented understanding of adolescent religion and spirituality but, because teenagers serve as bellwethers for possible future trends, it affords an important and distinctive window through which to observe and assess the current state and future direction of American religion as a whole.

Book excerpt: This paper examines how personal factors such as religion, future goals, and perceived social support impact behavioral risks in Latino youth from Washington, DC, based on the Adelante study. This population faces challenges including barriers to healthcare access, limited community resources, and an increased exposure to violence, making it vital to understand resilience and protective factors in this group. Using data from the second wave Adelante community-level survey of youth (N=723), we analyzed the influence of positive youth development (PYD) constructs, social support, religiosity, and future aspirations on risk outcomes such as substance use, sexual behaviors, and violence. Religiosity and future aspirations were independent variables, social support was a moderator, and the PYD constructs confidence, connection, competence, and contribution were mediators. Regression models examined the influence of independent variables on risky behaviors, while mediation analysis investigated how PYD constructs impact these relationships, with Sobel's test assessing mediation significance. Moderation analysis examined how varying social support levels affected these relationships, and path analysis and moderated mediation tested the theoretical model's fit using statistics such as chi-square, CFI, and RMSEA. Results indicated that higher religiosity and aspirations correlated with fewer risky behaviors and household structure modestly influenced social support. PYD constructs both partially and fully mediated the relationships between religiosity, aspirations, and risk behaviors, and social support moderated these effects, mostly strengthening protective influences in contexts of lower support. The study suggests promoting PYD and enhancing personal factors such as religiosity and social support to reduce risks among Latino youth. These findings support the development of culturally informed public health strategies and interventions to foster resilience and prevent risky behaviors in this demographic.
