Download or read book Curse of a Devil written by Bill Lindsay and published by Page Publishing Inc. This book was released on 2017-10-24 with total page 180 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Who or what was Spring Heeled Jack? This book explores most of the major theories of possible origins of this Victorian legend. Was he a mad-genius prankster, an alien, ghost, animal, or the devil himself? With all of today’s fantastic characters, creatures, and machines, Spring Heeled Jack might not seem all that incredible. However, if you had lived in the time period that he lurked about and was misfortunate enough to encounter him, this event might have been a life-altering experience. Several people of that time were witness to this phenomenon and were affected by something that has never been explained. I have attempted to regress the reader back to when the horse was still a common mode of transportation and streets were lit by gas. While my characters are all fictional, remember that Spring Heeled Jack was the real deal.

Book Reading Early Hammett

Download or read book Reading Early Hammett written by LeRoy Lad Panek and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2004-09-08 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dashiell Hammett, like most successful writers, honed his skills in the trenches. Long before The Maltese Falcon and The Thin Man made him a household name, Hammett developed his technique writing satirical magazine pieces, then moved on to churn out tales of sex, crime and adventure for pulp magazines. Characters like Sam Spade and Nick and Nora Charles made him famous, but Hammett perfected his style--and created the first hard-boiled detective fiction--writing stories and novels about an anonymous, middle-aged detective, known as the Continental Op. This detailed examination of the early works of Dashiell Hammett takes a new look at one of the 20th century's most influential crime writers and his creation of the hard-boiled detective story. Each chapter covers an element of Hammett's early writing career--his magazine fiction; the Continental Op's development as a character; the Continental Op novels; and the last Continental Op stories. A concluding chapter provides afterthoughts on Hammett's career, style and place in the history of detective fiction. A chronology of works cited, a bibliography and an index supplement the text.

Book A Culture of Corruption

Download or read book A Culture of Corruption written by David Dixon and published by Hawkins Press. This book was released on 1999 with total page 212 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Professor John Braithwaite says of this book "distinctive insights on police corruption seen through the revealing prism of the experience of NSW .... a terrific book ... An outstanding line-up of authors have performed to their usual standard here ... a wonderful asset to the series ... the collection sustains a consistently high standard" History, regulation and culture are key aspects of policing. This book presents essays on them which are based on research papers prepared for the Royal Commission into the New South Wales Police Service by three of Australia's leading police researchers: Janet Chan, David Dixon and Mark Finnane. It concludes with a major reassessment by David Dixon of the Royal Commission and of the reform process in the period since its final Report. In providing critical analyses of history, regulation, culture, and reform, this book contributes significantly to Australian and international policing literature. The book follows a significant example of the Royal Commission on criminal procedure and on criminal justice in England and Wales, whose research papers have been highly valued as contributions to both the reform process and to the academic literature. It is intended as a resource for policy makers and professionals by providing a convenient and critical introduction to the policing literature in Australia and overseas and will be of interest to Australian and international academics, researchers, and students in policing and criminal justice, and public administration more generally. In addition, the final chapter's review of the Royal Commission's Report and of the subsequent reform process is a major contribution to the continuing debate about the future of the New South Wales Police Service.

Book Empowered Femininity

Download or read book Empowered Femininity written by Tracy Rundstrom Williams and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2013-01-14 with total page 105 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Women in the first decades of the 21st century encounter competing ideologies of femininity. This book traces the existence of two such ideologies – traditional femininity and resistant femininity – in language, in women’s magazines, and in relation to the body. The book then uses a Discourse Analysis of women’s fitness magazines to investigate how these ideologies, or discourses, are encoded and ultimately merged into a single discourse of femininity. The extremely thin female body encodes traditional femininity in that it represents social values of beauty, smallness, and others-orientation, but it also encodes resistant femininity in that it represents determination, dedication, and strength. Similarly, fitness instructional texts from women’s fitness magazines demonstrate a hybrid discourse which integrates the language of traditional femininity and the language of resistant femininity. This hybrid discourse, which the author calls empowered femininity, appears as a seamless combination of the two “parent” discourses by placing itself in the middle of a continuum between traditional femininity and resistant femininity through two themes: limited achievement and celebrating objectification. The empowered femininity discourse also supports a sociological trend of many women wanting to balance competing demands of portraying highly valued but traditionally male traits while still being seen as traditionally feminine.

Book Grappling with the Monster Or the Curse and the Cure of Strong Drink

Download or read book Grappling with the Monster Or the Curse and the Cure of Strong Drink written by T. S. Arthur and published by Good Press. This book was released on 2019-12-09 with total page 257 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In preparing this, his latest volume, the author found himself embarrassed from the beginning, because of the large amount of material which came into his hands, and the consequent difficulty of selection and condensation. The extent to which alcohol curses the whole people cannot be shown in a few pages: the sad and terrible history would fill hundreds of volumes. And the same may be said of the curse which this poisonous substance lays upon the souls and bodies of men. Fearful as is the record which will be found in the chapters devoted to the curse of drink, let the reader bear in mind that a thousandth part has not been told. In treating the means of reformation, prevention and cure, our effort has been to give to each agency the largest possible credit for what it is doing. There is no movement, organization or work, however broad or limited in its sphere, which has for its object the cure of drunkenness in the individual, or the suppression of the liquor traffic in the State, that is not contributing its measure of service to the great cause every true temperance advocate has at heart; and what we largely need is, toleration for those who do not see with us, nor act with us in our special methods. Let us never forget the Divine admonition—"Forbid him not: for he that is not against us is for us." Patience, toleration and self-repression are of vital importance in any good cause. If we cannot see with another, let us be careful that, by opposition, we do not cripple him in his work. If we can assist him by friendly counsel to clearer seeing, or, by a careful study of his methods, gain a large efficiency for our own, far more good will be done than by hard antagonism, which rarely helps, and too surely blinds and hinders. Our book treats the curse and cure of drunkenness. How much better not to come under the terrible curse! How much better to run no risks where the malady is so disastrous, and the cure so difficult!

Book Fear Itself

Download or read book Fear Itself written by Stephen Hessel and published by Rodopi. This book was released on 2010 with total page 187 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What are fear, horror, and terror? This question, central to our endeavour, cannot be answered by one unified voice. It always cracks, falters, and fades before it can fully enunciate its proclamation. We, the authors, know this and have planned accordingly. This volume presents meditations on this issue springing from the four corners of intellectual inquiry. Each author provides a distinctive approach with which to address the issue at hand. Literary theory, psychoanalysis, media studies, political science, and many more disciplines occupy the same space between the covers of this book. We hope that through the cacophony of our diversity we will fill in the inevitable gaps when our voices fall short.
