Book How Neurofeedback Saved My Son from Autism

Download or read book How Neurofeedback Saved My Son from Autism written by Ng Sun Luen and published by Partridge Publishing Singapore. This book was released on 2017-08-21 with total page 125 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is not a manual on neurofeedback. Such a manual would require a thousand-page text written by an expert therapist. Rather, it tells the story of a fathers experience with neurofeedback as he witnesses this new science being applied day by day to pull his son back inch by inch from the world of autism. It is the story of a father who refused to accept all those grim prognoses from pediatricians, child psychologists, and child psychiatrists that autism was a genetic affliction with no cure. And lastly, it is a book of hope for those parents who are not yet prepared to surrender their children to the scourge of autism without a fight.

In this guide to neurofeedback, psychologist and neurofeedback clinician Stephen Larsen examines the countless benefits of neurofeedback for diagnosing and treating many of the most debilitating and now pervasive psychological and neurological ailments, including autism, ADHD, anxiety, depression, stroke, brain injury, obsessive-compulsive disorder, and post-traumatic stress disorder. Surveying the work of neurofeedback pioneers, Larsen explains the techniques and advantages of different neurofeedback methods--from the LENS technique and HEG to Z-score training and Slow Cortical Potentials. He reveals evidence of neuroplasticity--the brain’s ability to grow new neurons—and shows how neurofeedback can nourish the aging brain and help treat degenerative conditions such as Alzheimer’s and strokes. Examining the different types of brain waves, he shows how to recognize our own dominant brainwave range and thus learn to exercise control over our mental states. He explains how to combine neurofeedback with breathwork, mindfulness, meditation, and attention-control exercises such as Open Focus. Sharing successful and almost miraculous case studies of neurofeedback patients from a broad range of backgrounds, including veterans and neglected children, this book shows how we can nurture our intimate relationship with the brain, improving emotional, cognitive, and creative flexibility as well as mental health.

Book The Thinking Moms Revolution

Download or read book The Thinking Moms Revolution written by and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2013-04-08 with total page 336 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Thinking Moms’ Revolution (TMR) is a group of twenty-three moms (and one awesome dad) from Montana to Malaysia who all have children with developmental disabilities. Initially collaborating online about therapies, biomedical intervention, alternative medicine, special diets, and doctors on the cutting edge of treatment approaches to an array of chronic and developmental disabilities, such as autism, sensory processing disorders, food allergies, ADHD, asthma, and seizures, they've come together into something far more substantial. Suspecting that some of the main causes may be overused medicines, vaccinations, environmental toxins, and processed foods, they began a mission to help reverse the effects. In the process, they became a tight-knit family dedicated to helping their kids shed their diagnoses. Here, collected by Helen Conroy and Lisa Joyce Goes, are the stories of their fights to recover their kids from autism and related disorders. With each chapter written by a different TMR member, they share how they discovered each other, what they learned from each other, and why it’s important to have close friends who understand what it's like to parent a child with special needs. You'll read about the their experiences, and learn how their determination and friendships have become a daily motivation for parents worldwide.

Book Up from Autism the Cause and the Cure

Download or read book Up from Autism the Cause and the Cure written by Mary Alyce Carlisle and published by Mary Carlisle. This book was released on 2008-03-01 with total page 284 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the story of the freedom and the sunshine that now permeates my very being I am the mother of a communicating actualized autistic boy child who has consumed my every thought for almost thirteen years. I diagnosed him myself silently. I have a degree in special education that equipped me with the familiarity to diagnose my son from birth although I did not ever actively work in the field. I recognized the symptoms and I knew immediately that I was in for the run for my son's and my life. I understood that the help out there in nineteen ninety four was very bleak. I did not want to discuss his condition with anyone because I did not want to hear their diagnosis nor prognosis. Things were being offered like early intervention which was and is most important. At the time there was not much promise and experience behind it. I could not tolerate the uncertain future, so I decided to free my son myself. I am now so thankful and grateful that I took this approach myself because I now know the cause of his condition for certain. I don't know the real prevention in most cases, but I do know why he could not speak and develop intellectually in a normal and regular manner. I observed him as if he were on a respirator for his life. He is a combination of my husband and myself and I could and did diagnose him properly & correctly. I am sure of this because my own brain has recording issues. A person not having this might find it impossible to discover this. I have not met anyone who has exactly described their brain as I describe mine. My son's brain earlier in life did not record in a lot of important areas. His brain stem however seemed to be functioning well. Please forgive me. I want to try to discuss a bit of science with you. Bear with me I'm trying to simplify this hard, heart felt subject. I lived and observed my son as my heart was screaming for understanding. The big! big question is why are there so many differences between autistic children. It appears that most all brains in human beings are basically structurally alike. When things appear differently, we compare it to what we call a normal functioning brain pattern. That is how we conclude that there is damage. My observation is that the brain of my child is made up of the basic DNA-pool of my husband and my family's DNA. Your child's brain is made up of the basic DNA of your two parents' families too. I'll say DNA has traits and talents that are particular and peculiar to those two families for the most part for analytical purposes. Yet, we say and see that the basic components of all brains are theoretically and basically the same. The basic structure via DNA makes up the explanation of why each autistic child performs at different levels at different times and demonstrates different abilities. Many parents proclaim their child does this and others proclaim their child does that. They proclaim that they are so different, yet they have so many similarities. This suggests to me, as a parent who has observed my child as if he was on a resipirator for life support, the damage is not done to the DNA structure that is germane for familiar traits. The damage is done to the part of the brain that is located in the cerebrum. The cerebrum performs these important services or functions: (1) the five senses, (2) thinking, (3) memory and (4) speech. The central area here to autism is memory. The memory has severe damage. All of the surrounding components cannot work because the memory is not recording anything of significance permanently. The memory is the component that has to be rehabilitated and brought up to a level that can record, so that the five senses can be normal. (1) The hearing can be so loud to the child's ears that it literally hurts from the noise. (2) The softest touch can startle the child because each time it is a new experience. This makes the child hate and reject touch. (3) Eating and the pleasure of food come from a sense of smell. The memo

Book excerpt: Thriving with Autism through Neurofeedback Therapy Are you looking for a tool that will get you faster and further results? In the beginning, an autism diagnosis can feel devastating. Some moments are brilliant, while others are a confusing tangle of meltdowns that may even include violence. In those moments, void of hope, you would do almost anything to make it stop. Sometimes it simply comes down to how you use-and diffuse-a situation. Louloua Smadi understands this desperation well. Her brother, Milo, was diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) at two and a half years of age. Today, he is training to become a professional pastry chef. It's the years in between that she shares in her book, From Client to Clinician: The Transformative Power of Neurofeedback Therapy for Families Living with Autism and Other Special Needs. Everything began to change when the family met Dr. Lynette Louise. Her integrative approach using neurofeedback and play was the catalyst that helped Milo to thrive and grow. Louloua even used the therapy herself to overcome poor concentration and focus. Greatly impressed with her own improvements, she was inspired to become a practitioner herself. Her path from client to clinician illustrates the different approaches to healing using neurofeedback and highlights the gap between the research and clinical worlds. Whether you are a parent, caregiver, therapist, or potential client, this book will help you gain a clear understanding of neurofeedback therapy and how this personal and holistic therapy can help you or your loved ones overcome a challenging diagnosis.

Book The Boy Who Felt Too Much

Download or read book The Boy Who Felt Too Much written by Lorenz Wagner and published by Allen & Unwin. This book was released on 2019-12-03 with total page 204 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The human story behind Henry Markram's Intense World Theory of autism. How a renowned neuroscientist and his son changed our view of autism forever THE INTERNATIONAL BESTSELLER 'Extraordinary . . . A tale of love, constancy and groundbreaking research.' -RON SUSKIND, Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist and author of Life, Animated Henry Markram is the Elon Musk of neuroscience, the man behind the billion-dollar Blue Brain Project to build a supercomputer model of the brain. He has set the goal of decoding all disturbances of the mind within a generation. This quest is personal for him. The driving force behind his grand ambition has been his son Kai, who suffers from autism. Raising Kai made Henry Markram question all that he thought he knew about neuroscience, and then inspired his groundbreaking research that would upend the conventional wisdom about autism, expressed in his now famous theory of Intense World Syndrome. When Kai was first diagnosed, his father consulted studies and experts. He knew as much about the human brain as almost anyone but still felt as helpless as any parent confronted with this condition in his child. What's more, the scientific consensus that autism was a deficit of empathy didn't mesh with Markram's experience of his son. He became convinced that the disorder, which has seen a 657 per cent increase in diagnoses over the past decade, was fundamentally misunderstood. Bringing his worldclass research to bear on the problem, he devised a radical new theory of the disorder: People like Kai don't feel too little; they feel too much. Their senses are too delicate for this world. The theory of Intense World Syndrome could change the way we see autism forever, and it's thanks to Kai, the boy who changed everything.
