Download or read book Cancer Care for the Whole Patient written by Institute of Medicine and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2008-03-19 with total page 455 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cancer care today often provides state-of-the-science biomedical treatment, but fails to address the psychological and social (psychosocial) problems associated with the illness. This failure can compromise the effectiveness of health care and thereby adversely affect the health of cancer patients. Psychological and social problems created or exacerbated by cancer-including depression and other emotional problems; lack of information or skills needed to manage the illness; lack of transportation or other resources; and disruptions in work, school, and family life-cause additional suffering, weaken adherence to prescribed treatments, and threaten patients' return to health. Today, it is not possible to deliver high-quality cancer care without using existing approaches, tools, and resources to address patients' psychosocial health needs. All patients with cancer and their families should expect and receive cancer care that ensures the provision of appropriate psychosocial health services. Cancer Care for the Whole Patient recommends actions that oncology providers, health policy makers, educators, health insurers, health planners, researchers and research sponsors, and consumer advocates should undertake to ensure that this standard is met.
Download or read book Notes from a Cancer Mom written by Leslie W Jermainne and published by Balboa Press. This book was released on 2015-10-19 with total page 392 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Leslies son, Brian, was shockingly diagnosed with Stage III Burkitt Lymphoma at age fifteen, the most aggressive type of lymphoma. Brian wasnt sick; he simply had a lump under his arm. Five days later, one appeared on his abdomen. PET scan results showed four tumors total. Three hours away from home and living in the hospital for seven days at a time while Brian received intensive chemotherapy, Leslie wrote an e-mail home every day to keep family and friends informed about their days fighting cancer. Writing helped to let the fear out and to keep track of the many lessons they learned about life. Many people were touched by their story, saying it helped them to find gratitude in their own lives. Leslie is sharing her e-mails in hopes of helping other parents whose children are diagnosed with cancer so they know they arent alone in what they might be experiencing, thinking, and feeling. Having your child diagnosed with cancer, their own body trying to kill them, is the absolute worst. Life comes to a screeching, glass-shattering halt while you pray that your baby just lives. The fear is intensely overwhelming, says Leslie.

Download or read book Dead Mom Walking written by Rachel Matlow and published by Penguin. This book was released on 2020-03-31 with total page 279 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: NATIONAL BESTSELLER SHORTLISTED for the 2021 Kobo Emerging Writer Prize SHORTLISTED for the 2021 Vine Award in Non-Fiction "A comedy for catastrophic times." --CBC "A hilarious memoir of effervescent misadventures." --Toronto Star "How am I laughing at someone's mother's cancer? How? We think we can't laugh about death, about cancer, about our mothers and their suffering . . . and we can't, but we can. And there's so much relief in that." --Carolyn Taylor, BARONESS VON SKETCH SHOW A whip-smart and darkly funny memoir about an unconventional family, the limits of wellness fads, and the mother of all catastrophes. Rachel Matlow’s eccentric mom, Elaine, never quite followed the script handed down to her. Her bold out-there-ness made it okay for Rachel to be their genderqueer self and live life on their own terms. But when Elaine decides to try to heal her cancer naturally, Rachel has to draw the line. What ensues is a tug of war between logical and magical thinking, an odyssey through New Age remedies ranging from herbal tinctures and juice cleanses to a countryside ayahuasca trip, and a portrait of a mother and child who’ve never been physically closer or ideologically further apart. In facing their inimitable mother’s death, Rachel has written a book bursting with life—the epic adventures and epic fails, the broken limbs and belly laughs. As hilarious as it is poignant, Dead Mom Walking is about writing the story of your life only to find out that life has other plans.
Download or read book My Parent Has Cancer and It Really Sucks written by Marc Silver and published by Sourcebooks, Inc.. This book was released on 2013-03-05 with total page 221 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Let's face it, cancer sucks. This book provides real-life advice from real-life teens designed to help teens live with a parent who is fighting cancer. One million American teenagers live with a parent who is fighting cancer. It's a hard blow for those already navigating high school, preparing for college, and becoming increasingly independent. Author Maya Silver was 15 when her mom was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2001. She and her dad, Marc, have combined their family's personal experience with advice from dozens of medical professionals and real stories from 100 teens—all going through the same thing Maya did. The topic of cancer can be difficult to approach, but in a highly designed, engaging style, this book gives practical guidance that includes: How to talk about the diagnosis (and what does diagnosis even mean, anyway?) The best outlets for stress (punching a wall is not a great one, but should it happen, there are instructions for a patch job) How to deal with friends (especially one the ones with 'pity eyes') Whether to tell the teachers and guidance counselors and what they should know (how not to get embarrassed in class) What happens in a therapy session and how to find a support group if you want one A special section for parents also gives tips on strategies for sharing the news and explaining cancer to a child, making sure your child doesn't become the parent, what to do if the outlook is grim, and tips for how to live life after cancer. My Parent Has Cancer and It Really Sucks allows teens to see that they are not alone. That no matter how rough things get, they will get through this difficult time. That everything they're feeling is ok. Essays from Gilda Radner's "Gilda's Club" annual contest are an especially poignant and moving testimony of how other teens dealt with their family's situation. Praise for My Parent Has Cancer and It Really Sucks: "Wisely crafted into a wonderfully warm, engaging and informative book that reads like a chat with a group of friends with helpful advice from the experts." —Paula K. Rauch MD, Director of the Marjorie E. Korff Parenting At a Challenging Time Program "A must read for parents, kids, teachers and medical staff who know anyone with cancer. You will learn something on every page." —Anna Gottlieb, MPA, Founder and CEO Gilda's Club Seattle "This book is a 'must have' for oncologists, cancer treatment centers and families with teenagers." —Kathleen McCue, MA, LSW, CCLS, Director of the Children's Program at The Gathering Place, Cleveland, OH "My Parent Has Cancer and It Really Sucks provides a much-needed toolkit for teens coping with a parent's cancer." —Jane Saccaro, CEO of Camp Kesem, a camp for children who have a parent with cancer

There could be times when we might feel like sitting beside our Mother or giving her a tight hug, but still something holds us back. And then one day she takes an exit from this world with the empty yet heavy vessel yet to be filled with unwavering love and care. This uninvited disease knocked at our door and entered into my Mother’s life; it was only then I realized that so many people are suffering from cancer. This is the story of my Mother who fought cancer. This is my journey with my Mother – a year that changed everything in my life. That 1 year made me realize the true meaning of the words Maa, Mother, Mom. I was fortunate to have interviewed top-notch gynecologists and oncologists of the country and learned more about this disease. In my quest to scuba dive into the ‘whys’ and ‘hows’ of cancer, I asked them the questions that every patient and their family members might have during the treatment. I have shared all those questions and answers at the end of this book. This book explains all possible treatment procedures, surgeries, chemotherapies, side-effects, medication, cost, pain, mental situation and strength of a cancer patient. Reviews: This book is very unique. The author has written his heart out, sharing his mother’s brave journey in fighting against cancer. As he gives a detailed description of his personal experiences, one can truly empathize with the author all the way through reading the book. The author not only shares his story but also sends a message to the readers to value their loved ones and take care of them, no matter what. -HARSHDEEP KAUR (Bollywood playback singer) What a lovely story! This book actually puts together my real-life chapter and fears that I have in my head, collectively! Thank you for writing this and making us aware even more of how important it is to express our love to our loved ones before we realise it’s too late! -DJ PAROMA

It relies on the accuracy of a microscope to trace and ensure removal of skin cancer down to its roots. This procedure allows dermatologists trained in Mohs Surgery to see beyond the visible disease and to precisely identify and remove the entire tumor, leaving healthy tissue unharmed. This procedure is most often used in treating two of the most common forms of skin cancer: basal cell carcinoma and squamous cell carcinoma. The cure rate for Mohs Micrographic Surgery is the highest of all treatments for skin cancer--up to 99 percent even if other forms of treatment have failed. This procedure, the most exact and precise method of tumor removal, minimizes the chance of regrowth and lessens the potential for scarring or disfigurement

Download or read book Cancer Is What I Had Not Who I Am written by Katina S. Acker and published by Christian Faith Publishing, Inc.. This book was released on 2022-08-01 with total page 115 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cancer is What I Had, Not Who I AM is a book that chronicles the life of a family struggles and victories before and after the diagnoses of cancer. The book was written to share Katina's personal testimony of her experiences with cancer with men and women across the world that have encountered similar experiences. The book was ordained to help bring awareness, restore hope, and shatter the strongholds and lies that the enemy (Satan) has purposed in the lives of God's children. Katina states she wrote the book to remind the world that we still serve the same God that heal and raises the dead. Katina's prayer is that her personal testimonies will open the eyes of our understanding and will enlighten the world so we may know the hope and inheritance of the saints of God. Her goal is to remind the people that we must walk by faith and not by sight and that the same God that raised Lazarus from the grave (John 12:1), healed the woman with the blood issues (Mark 9:20-22), has also healed her of cancer. Katina states she wants to also bring awareness of the importance of staying on top of our health and learning how to listen to our bodies. She reminds the readers that cancer doesn't care what your ethnicity is, how much money you have, or what your plans were. Cancer usually shows up with no warning or invites and demands a presence in your life, and you must make the decision to fight or not. Each of us have a testimony or story of how we overcame, so we should never allow our current circumstances or situations to dictate our future. You're more than your diagnosis. You're more than your battle scars. You are victorious, and that makes you a survivor.
