Book excerpt: This is a postgraduate dissertation that attempts to understand and examine the role of intellectual capital in determining company market value and financial performance by taking a sample of UK firms listed on the London Stock Exchange. The study uses Pulic s (1998, 2000, 2002, 2004) framework of Value Added Intellectual Coefficient (VAIC) to measure intellectual capital components. The empirical results suggest that greater intellectual capital efficiency leads to better financial performance.Human capital is identified as the most significant intellectual capital contributor in a firm. In addition, the dissertation compares the findings with Zeghal and Maaloul s (2010) sample on 2005 data, and obtaines evidence that UK firms generated less value through intellectual capital components in the recession affected year 2009 than on the years before the crisis.

This apparent inability of traditional financial accounting methods to adequately explain the gap between a firm's market value and its financial performance has induced many researchers to carry out investigations on the role of intellectual capital, an element not fairly recognized in the financial statements. This book therefore examines the effect of intellectual capital on the financial performance of listed commercial banks in Kenya. The analysis is useful to investors, financial analysts or shareholders who are interested in knowing how the size of intellectual capital in a firm affects the firm's performance. It also serves as a basis for further research and discussions on intellectual capital.

The components of intellectual capital were Value Added of Capital Employee (VACA), Value Added of Human Capital (VAHU), and Structural Capital Value Added (STVA). The firm's market value was measured by Market to Book Value (MBV). The finance performances were measured by Return on Assets (ROA), Return on Equity (ROE), and Growth of Revenue (GR). To find the impact of variables, this research used linier regression analysis. The result of regression analysis showed that intellectual capital (VAIC) had not significant effect to firm's market value and Growth of Revenue; Value Added of Capital Employee (VACA) had only significant effect to Return on Equity; Value Added of Human Capital (VAHU) had not significant effect to both of firm's market value and finance performance; and Structural Capital Value Added (STVA) had significant effect to all measurement of finance performance.
