Book excerpt: From this broad GPI perspective, good education indicators should also be able to assess whether Canadians and Nova Scotians are becoming more aware of contextual situations and systems, social and economic interconnections, current world events, the processes of the natural world, and the influence of current lifestyles on population health and on the choices and quality of life of future generat [...] The most common word used in the dialogues-said by the CEA to rise effortlessly from the groups-was "wise."5 Perhaps one of the most inclusive statements concerning the goal of education comes from the United Nations: The goal of education is to make people wiser, more knowledgeable, better informed, ethical, responsible, critical and capable of continuing to learn. [...] It is one that implies the development and enlargement of human consciousness or awareness of the world, of 'seeing' or looking at the world with new and enriched perspectives that transcend the local and particular, and that enable individuals to achieve a greater meaning and sense of who they are and how they relate to the world.7 Stewart argues that social, vocational, and economic goals are se [...] In 1997, the Organisation of Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) initiated an interdisciplinary program to identify "key competencies" that contribute to a "well- functioning society" and that are "necessary for individuals to lead an overall successful life, and for society to face the challenges of the present and the future."9 Key competencies are defined by the demands of modern life [...] In sum, the long-term goal of any comprehensive and holistic education indicator program should be to track whether, and the degree to which, society is teaching and learning what is necessary to enable a better understanding of both human society and the natural world and to create the outcomes required for a sustainable society that promotes the wellbeing of present and future generations.

Book The Attack on Nova Scotia Schools

Download or read book The Attack on Nova Scotia Schools written by Grant Frost and published by Formac Publishing Company. This book was released on 2020-04-07 with total page 182 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nova Scotia's public schools and their students have faced dramatic conflict and drastic change over the past 25 years. While critics charge that schools are failing kids, teachers have been under attack from think tanks and politicians. Parents and citizens have seen power centralized after democratically-elected school boards were abolished. Grant Frost offers an insider's account of these tumultuous years and offers an explanation for the turmoil. Behind the conflict he discovers right-wing think tanks that relentlessly seek to discredit public education and teachers while pushing for changes that would benefit corporations who want willing workers. The think tanks are also promoters of the charter school movement that continues to gain ground in the US and that is promoted as a better option than public schools. Whether it's Nova Scotia's own right-wing think tank or local journalists who readily adopt the cry that our schools are failing, Grant Frost traces the path that he finds has threatened the quality of schooling in Nova Scotia. He sets out the steps for parents, teachers and other citizens to ensure that public education is championed and protected in Nova Scotia.

Book The Supreme Court of Nova Scotia 1754 2004

Download or read book The Supreme Court of Nova Scotia 1754 2004 written by Barry Cahill and published by University of Toronto Press. This book was released on 2004-12-15 with total page 562 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Prepared to coincide with the 250th anniversary of the establishment of Nova Scotia's Supreme Court, this important new volume provides a comprehensive history of the institution, Canada's oldest common law court. The thirteen essays include an account of the first meeting in 1754 of the court in Michaelmas Term, surveys of jurisprudence (the court's early federalism cases; its use of American law; attitudes to the administrative state), and chapters on the courts of Westminster Hall, on which the Supreme Court was modelled, and the various courthouses it has occupied. Anchoring the volume are two longer chapters, one on the pre-confederation period and one on the modern period. Editors Philip Girard, Jim Phillips, and Barry Cahill have put together the first complete history of any Canadian provincial superior court. All of the essays are original, and many offer new interpretations of familiar themes in Canadian legal history. They take the reader through the establishment of the one-judge court to the present day – a unique contribution to our understanding of superior courts.

  • Author : Garry Neill Kennedy
  • Publisher : MIT Press
  • Release : 2012-02-24

Download or read book The Last Art College written by Garry Neill Kennedy and published by MIT Press. This book was released on 2012-02-24 with total page 481 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The long-awaited history of the art college that became an unlikely epicenter of the art world in the 1960s and 1970s. How did a small art college in Nova Scotia become the epicenter of art education—and to a large extent of the postmimimalist and conceptual art world itself—in the 1960s and 1970s? Like the unorthodox experiments and rich human resources that made Black Mountain College an improbable center of art a generation earlier, the activities and artists at Nova Scotia College of Art and Design (aka NSCAD) in the 1970s redefined the means and methods of art education and the shape of art far beyond Halifax. A partial list of visiting artists and faculty members at NSCAD would include Joseph Beuys, Sol LeWitt, Gerhard Richter, Dan Graham, Mel Bochner, Lucy Lippard, John Baldessari, Hans Haacke, Yvonne Rainer, Robert Frank, Jenny Holzer, Robert Morris, Eric Fischl, and Dara Birnbaum. Kasper Koenig and Benjamin Buchloh ran the NSCAD Press, publishing books by Hollis Frampton, Lawrence Weiner, Donald Judd, Daniel Buren, Michael Asher, Martha Rosler, and Michael Snow, among others. The Lithography Workshop produced early works by many of today's masters, including John Baldessari, Vito Acconci, and Claes Oldenburg. With The Last Art College, Garry Kennedy, the college's visionary president at the time, gives us the long-awaited documentary history of NSCAD during a formative era. From gallery openings to dance performances to visiting lectures to exhibitions to classroom projects, the book gives a rich historical and visual account of the school's activities, supplemented by details of specific events, reminiscences by faculty and students, accounts of artists' talks, and notes on memorable controversies.
