Book Holding Their Ground

Download or read book Holding Their Ground written by Alain Durand-Lasserve and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2012-05-23 with total page 277 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Security of land tenure for the urban poor is now a major problem for developing cities in Africa, Asia and Latin America. This book presents and analyzes the main conclusions of a comparative research programme on land tenure issues. It looks at how solutions can be found and implemented to respond to the demands and needs of the majority of squatters and informal settlements, and analyzes how urban stakeholders, with different social, legal and economic constraints, find innovative and flexible solutions. The book is intended to fill a gap in the literature on comparative research on tenure policies and should be useful to researchers and professionals involved in defining and instigating tenure upgrading policies and programmes.

Book Housing for the Urban Poor in Developing Countries

Download or read book Housing for the Urban Poor in Developing Countries written by Brian C. Aldrich and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The majority of the world's population is now living in urban areas, and the urban population is growing at a higher rate than the rural population. In developing countries, large scale urbanization continues to support squatting and informal settlements in large cities. While some urban regimes have been able to halt or reverse this process, it is ongoing in most countries. The case studies examined in this book illustrate the extent of the problem and the variety of efforts being made to mitigate it. Slums and informal settlements in most cities suffer from extreme inequality and are deprived of basic services which are essential for human existence. For the urban poor, housing is a basic problem. If sustainable policies with respect to housing can be derived and implemented, the poor in the developing world will experience a significant improvement in their living standards. The book illustrates the profound but varied transformation taking place in the social organization of societies with regard to housing. It reviews myriad case studies from developing societies across continents, and it further compares several societies at once in terms of their strategies and cultural orientations towards providing housing for the poor. [Subject: Sociology, Poverty Studies, Urban Studies, Development Studies]

Book Housing the Poor in the Developing World

Download or read book Housing the Poor in the Developing World written by Graham Tipple and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2003-10-04 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First Published in 2004. Housing policies and programmes tend to result from political expediency, rather than a rational and informed analysis of the situation and the demands of individual households for housing. Housing the Poor in the Developing World aims to show how methods of analysis can be used to improve efficacy and equity in housing projects and policies, with analysis designed for local circumstances. This book is aimed at satisfying the need to bring together methods of analysis from several disciplines which can be applied to housing. Each method is presented and illustrated with a case study to show how it can be used to inform housing policy in a wide range of countries in all parts of the developing world.

Book excerpt: Research Paper (undergraduate) from the year 2010 in the subject Sociology - Habitation and Urban Sociology, grade: 1,3 (Germany), University of Cologne (Institute for Technology and Resources Management in the Tropics and Subtropics (ITT)), course: Master_TERMA, language: English, abstract: The problem of urban poverty, and precarious habitability has increased in the last decades. Such a growth of urban poor population has overwhelmed the local institutions and international development agencies. The scale and velocity of urban population growth suppose nowadays a major challenge. Many housing policies have been undertaken though many papers discuss their efficiency. This paper reviews part of the last years literature concerning the challenges of housing shortage in several countries in the Tropics and Subtropics. It makes an approach on the urban planning strategies undertaken in the last decades, most common housing policies and their implementation and results. Then it focused on grassroots organizations capabilities and in the possible strategies to support them. Finally the paper reviews some proposals for poverty understanding as a basis for new possible strategies for fighting urban poverty

Book Urban Policy and Economic Development

Download or read book Urban Policy and Economic Development written by and published by World Bank Publications. This book was released on 1991 with total page 100 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Rapid demographic growth will add 600 million people to cities and towns in developing countries during the 1990s, about two-thirds of the expected total population increase. Of the world's 21 megacities, which will expand to have more than 10 million people, 17 will be in developing countries. With urban economic activities making up an increasing share of GDP in all countries, the productivity of the urban economy will heavily influence economic growth. This paper analyzes the fiscal, financial, and real sector linkages between urban economic activities andmacroeconomic performance. It builds on this analysis to propose a policy framework and strategy that willredefine the urban challenge in developing countries. ISBN10: 0-8213-1816-0 ISBN13: 978-0-8213-1816-4

This book was released on 2015-10-28 with total page 221 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over the past two decades it has become widely recognized that housing issues have to be placed in a broader framework recognizing that civil society in the form of Community Based Organizations (CBOs) and their allies are increasingly networking and emerging as strong players that cannot easily be overlooked. This book brings together different perspectives on multi-scalar approaches within the housing field and on grassroots’ engagement with formal agencies including local government, higher levels of government and international agencies. By moving away from romanticizing local self-initiatives, it focuses on understanding the emerging potential once local initiatives are interlinked and scaled-up to transnational networks.

Book Access to Basic Infrastructure by the Urban Poor

Download or read book Access to Basic Infrastructure by the Urban Poor written by Aurelio Menéndez and published by World Bank Publications. This book was released on 1991 with total page 94 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report documents discussions on urban poverty issues in the developing countries of Latin America, Africa, and Asia related to the urban poor's access to basic infrastructure services. Basic infrastructure services are services that allow the urban poor to live under conditions that facilitate their income-generating activities so they can maintain a good nutritional level and participate in the normal activities of society. Services include housing, transportation, water, sanitation, solid waste disposal, and energy for cooking and lighting. In addition to discussing ways to improve the conditions of the poor in urban areas through the provision of basic infrastructure services, the workshop also laid the groundwork for follow-up regional senior policy seminars in Latin America, Africa, and Asia. While workshop participants did not attempt to conclude with formal policy recommendations, they did develop general areas of consensus. The focus of the workshop discussions were on the following concerns: financial issues; the role of nongovernmental organizations; the role of governments; and the relationship between nongovernmental organizations and the governments.
