Book Model Code of Practice for the Welfare of Animals

Download or read book Model Code of Practice for the Welfare of Animals written by Pisc and published by CSIRO PUBLISHING. This book was released on 2002 with total page 50 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Animal welfare considerations are becoming increasingly important for the keeping and farming of animals, both in Australia and internationally. Practices that may have once been deemed acceptable are now being reassessed in light of new knowledge and changing attitudes. The minimum standards outlined in this Code are intended to help people involved in the care and management of poultry to adopt standards of husbandry that are acceptable. Special requirements for various species are given in the appendices. This Code of Practice is intended as a guide for people responsible for the welfare and husbandry of domestic poultry. It recognizes that the basic requirement for welfare of poultry is a husbandry system appropriate to their physiological and behavioral needs. The Code emphasizes that--whatever the form of husbandry--managers, employees and all others responsible for the day-to-day needs of domestic poultry have a responsibility to care for poultry under their control.

Book Alternative Systems for Poultry

Download or read book Alternative Systems for Poultry written by Victoria Sandilands and published by CABI. This book was released on 2012-01-01 with total page 359 pages. It is suitable for researchers and students in poultry science. .

Book The Welfare of Domestic Fowl and Other Captive Birds

Download or read book The Welfare of Domestic Fowl and Other Captive Birds written by Ian J. H. Duncan and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2009-12-29 with total page 310 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Animal welfare is attracting increasing interest worldwide, especially in developed countries where the knowledge and resources are available to (at least potentially) provide better management systems for farm animals, as well as companion, zoo and laboratory animals. The key requirements for adequate food, water, a suitable environment, appropriate companionship and good health are important for animals kept for all of these purposes. There has been increased attention given to farm animal welfare in many co- tries in recent years. This derives largely from the fact that the relentless pursuit of nancial reward and ef ciency, to satisfy market demands, has led to the devel- ment of intensive animal production systems that challenge the conscience of many consumers in those countries. In developing countries, human survival is still a daily uncertainty, so that p- vision for animal welfare has to be balanced against human needs. Animal welfare is usually a priority only if it supports the output of the animal, be it food, work, clothing, sport or companionship. In principle the welfare needs of both humans and animals can be provided for, in both developing and developed countries, if resources are properly husbanded. In reality, however, the inequitable division of the world’s riches creates physical and psychological poverty for humans and a- mals alike in many parts of the world.

Book Genetics and the Behavior of Domestic Animals

Download or read book Genetics and the Behavior of Domestic Animals written by William M. Muir and published by Elsevier Inc. Chapters. This book was released on 2013-04-22 with total page 51 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Many behaviors in poultry can be modified by genetic selection. Selection of laying hens for maximum egg production had the unfortunate side effect of increased rates of beak inflicted damage on other birds. Selective breeding has eliminated broodiness and has either increased or decreased other behaviors, such as hysteria, fearfulness, appetite in broilers, social dominance, ability and damage to other birds. Genetic selection can be used to reduce behaviors that cause welfare problems. However, it must be approached with caution to avoid unintended consequences that would be detrimental to welfare. A calm, docile bird that appears behaviorally calm, may take longer for its heart rate to return to normal after it is frightened. The use of group selection instead of single-bird selection can be effectively used to reduce undesirable behaviors such as feather pecking and to maintain high egg production. An entire group of birds is selected instead of selecting individuals.
