Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'A must-have for anyone interested in working with straw and an astonishing contribution to the preservation of this endangered craft.' Jay Blades MBE, Co-Chair of Heritage Crafts An engaging makers' guide to the history and craft of straw plaiting, brimming with helpful step-by-step diagrams. Straw plaiting has been used to make accessories from hats and baskets to handbags, trimmings and homewares around the world for centuries. Once employing tens of thousands of people in the UK alone, the craft is now listed as Critically Endangered on Heritage Crafts' Red List. This book aims to change that, drawing on more than 50 previously unpublished patterns and techniques from around the world that will help you to unlock the history and preserve the skills of straw plaiting. For each pattern, follow the step-by-step diagrams and instructions and discover how they were developed whilst learning about materials, tools and preparation. Once familiar with the plaiting techniques – using straw as well as other materials – you will be able to develop your own skills, possibly blending in recycled materials, which are increasingly being used to produce beautiful and unique pieces.

Download or read book Media Hot and Cold written by Nicole Starosielski and published by Duke University Press. This book was released on 2021-10-04 with total page 171 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Media Hot and Cold Nicole Starosielski examines the cultural dimensions of temperature to theorize the ways heat and cold can be used as a means of communication, subjugation, and control. Diving into the history of thermal media, from infrared cameras to thermostats to torture sweatboxes, Starosielski explores the many meanings and messages of temperature. During the twentieth century, heat and cold were broadcast through mass thermal media. Today, digital thermal media such as bodily air conditioners offer personalized forms of thermal communication and comfort. Although these new media promise to help mitigate the uneven effects of climate change, Starosielski shows how they can operate as a form of biopower by determining who has the ability to control their own thermal environment. In this way, thermal media can enact thermal violence in ways that reinforce racialized, colonial, gendered, and sexualized hierarchies. By outlining how the control of temperature reveals power relations, Starosielski offers a framework to better understand the dramatic transformations of hot and cold media in the twenty-first century.

Download or read book Sustainable Homes written by James Grayson Trulove and published by Harper Collins. This book was released on 2004-03-30 with total page 210 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sustainable Homes puts to rest the stigma that "green architecture" is unattractive and unsuitable for residential architecture. For the houses shown in this volume represent design equal to or superior to most conventional houses. Each of these "eco" houses is unique. Some tread lightly on the site by nestling into the land. Others are designed to be extremely well suited to the climactic zones in which they are built. Many use materials that do no harm to the environment—materials that are recycled, salvaged, or harvested. The houses featured in Sustainable Homes are designed by today's top architects such as Obie Bowman, Fernau and Hartman, Hanrahan and Meyers, and Lake/Flato. They reveal how much the parameters of ecological design have expanded in just a few short years. Over two dozen individual houses are featured -- from locations as diverse as a Canadian cove to the Arizona desert, from Kansas plains to the Norwegian coast, from California bluffs to South Carolina wetlands -- each described through descriptions, photographs, plans, drawings, and schematics.

Download or read book The Blue Sky in the Heart written by Darlene Wu Anderson and published by WestBow Press. This book was released on 2014-02-19 with total page 148 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: My book is a description of the only thing I can see clearly without my vision: my past. This document reflects the tribulations I suffered in my childhood and how I lived my life with my disability. For almost five decades, my parents kept secret the truth of how the horrible accident happened when I was an infant. Although discovering the truth is important, the real value of my story is that it is a testimony of Gods greatness and power, for He has done amazing work in my life. This book is also intended to be a special tribute to Arval and Maysel Anderson, the two most remarkable individuals in my life. Their unselfish love has brought light to my darkness. I am not a writer but I hope this simple memoir will touch you in a special way.
