Book excerpt: North American and European ash trees are highly susceptible to emerald ash borer (EAB, Agrilus planipennis). This buprestid kills hosts via larva feeding on vascular tissue which eventually kills the host plant. Two new hosts have recently been found to support larval development of EAB. White fringetrees (Chionathus virginicus) were found attacked by EAB in 2014 and since then have been found to be attacked throughout other parts of the United States, while olive (Olea europaea) has only experimentally been found to support larvae to adulthood. Chemical profiles of these two plants were collected and analyzed to determine how their volatile emissions vary among susceptible and resistant ash trees. Additionally, larvae and adult beetles were tested for their performance on these novel plants. For white fringetree, wild populations were monitored to determine the impact of EAB during the attack wave. These studies find that white fringetree foliage supports adults, but when phloem is healthy it causes high larval morality in contrast to girdled or previously attacked by EAB where larvae survived by the end of assays. In the field, EAB began to use white fringetree quickly, within a couple of years after initial exposure. Female choice suggests white fringetree and susceptible ash are similarly preferred likely due to the similar volatile emissions. These chemicals likely caused host range expansion of EAB to this novel host. In contrast to ash, the impact of EAB on white fringetree is minimal. This plant mostly loses a branch or two from larval girdling, which in ornamentally planted fringetrees can be aesthetically displeasing. On olive, EAB is likely to be even less damaging because larvae take longer to develop than in ash and larvae die quickly in young, photosynthesizing stems. Adults did not perform well because oleuropein may cause them to compensatory feed and causing malnutrition. In North American forests, if EAB continues to destroy ash species at such high rates, EAB may be driven to use white fringetree more often. With continued use of this host, EAB is likely to adapt to better utilize white fringetree which could eventually lead to host switching.

They can modify, degrade, or destroy wildland ecosystem structure and function, and reduce native biodiversity. Landscape-level solutions are needed to address these problems. Conservation biologists seek to limit such damage and restore ecosystems using a variety of approaches. One such approach is biological control: the deliberate importation and establishment of specialized natural enemies, which can address invasive species problems and which should be considered as a possible component of restoration. Biological control can be an effective tool against many invasive insects and plants but it has rarely been successfully employed against other groups. Safety is of paramount concern and requires that the natural enemies used be specialized and that targeted pests be drivers of ecological degradation. While modern approaches allow species to be selected with a high level of security, some risks do remain. However, as in all species introductions, these should be viewed in the context of the risk of failing to reduce the impact of the invasive species. This unique book identifies the balance among these factors to show how biological control can be integrated into ecosystem restoration as practiced by conservation biologists. Since then, EAB has caused almost 100% ash mortality in the areas it has spread in North America. Despite quarantine and control measures, EAB continues to spread across the US and parts of Canada. In June 2022, EAB was found in northwest Oregon near the Washington border. Oregon ash (Fraxinus latifolia), the Pacific Northwest's (PNW) only native ash species, is highly susceptible to EAB and could experience significant mortality throughout the region. Susceptible ash species native to Europe and eastern North America are commonly used as ornamentals in Washington cities, so urban and community forests could also be significantly impacted. Book excerpt: This volume is an account of the scientific and social responses made to the discovery of an invasive forest insect -- the emerald ash borer or EAB (Agrilus planipennis Fairmaire, 1888) -- in North America, that was formally announced in July 2002. Since its recognition, this wood-boring beetle has become one of the most destructive and costly exotic species ever encountered. More than $300 million in federal USDA-APHIS funds (alone) have been devoted to battling this pest, which has killed some tens of millions of ash trees, chiefly within southeastern Michigan and surrounding states. EAB has now been found in 28 states and two Canadian provinces. But those numbers are almost certain to keep growing in coming years. While primarily a case study, this work nonetheless examines larger issues concerning invasive species as a whole, their inadvertent transport and worldwide spread through the rise of globalization, regulations that have been adopted to prevent their introduction, and the successes or failures of state and federal agencies to try and enforce those regulations. It offers the first general work of its kind to appear on the ash borer that is directed towards a broad audience including the public, entomologists and foresters, environmentalists and ecologists, researchers, regulators, and indeed anyone who wishes to learn more about this important and timely topic. No previous knowledge of EAB or invasion biology is assumed. This book covers all of the major aspects of scientific research and management that have occurred since EAB was recognized in 2002. Book excerpt: The emerald ash borer, Agrilus planipennis Fairmaire, is a serious exotic pest of ash trees in North America. One of the greatest challenges facing its successful management is the ability to accurately detect it in a tree. The within-tree distributions of A. planipennis feeding galleries were described in relation to height-above-ground, stem diameter, bark thickness and stem aspect. Gallery distributions were bounded by a minimum stem diameter of approximately 5 cm, a minimum bark thickness of approximately 2 mm and a maximum height above ground of 7 m. Galleries were found most often on the southwest side of the tree. A maximum bark thickness of approximately 4.5 mm was observed in trees that had been attacked for only one year, but not in trees that had more than one year of attack. To increase the probability of detecting new A. planipennis infestations, initial searches should be made in trunk sections and branches with diameters of approximately 7 cm.
