Book International Service Learning

Download or read book International Service Learning written by Marianne Larsen and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2015-12-14 with total page 302 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: International service learning (ISL) programs are growing more popular with students looking to advance their skills and knowledge to become global citizens. While the benefits of these programs among students are well documented, little is known about the implications they have on host communities themselves. This volume explores the impact of ISL programs on members of host communities (e.g. host families and local partner NGOs) who are increasingly influenced by the presence of international students in their lives. Drawing upon post-colonial, feminist and other critical and decolonizing theories, it examines the complicated power relations between North American ISL students and host communities in East and West Africa, the Caribbean and Central America. It stresses the importance of developing trusting relations between ISL students, faculty and individuals in the host communities to create mutually engaging learning experiences.

Book Host Communities and Pilgrimage Tourism

Download or read book Host Communities and Pilgrimage Tourism written by Ricardo Nicolas Progano and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2023-04-25 with total page 237 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book delves into topics on pilgrimage travel and communities from a variety of perspectives through academic research based on the Middle East, Northeast Asia, the Indian subcontinent, and Europe, where sacred sites have become of great importance for both international and domestic tourism. In particular, Europe and Asia possess a high volume of world-renowned pilgrimage sites that are currently being developed as tourism destinations in their respective countries, such as Santiago de Compostela (Spain), Lourdes (France), and Koyasan (Japan). This book includes studies on these two continents that harbor both a great history of pilgrimage tradition, as well as tourism development related to religious travel. The book importantly covers the role of the community in religious tourism, as well as the impact on the locals, which is comparatively an unexplored area. Whilst pilgrimage is seen as an effective tool to revitalize local economies, this book also reveals the different challenges to achieving this goal. Realizing the importance of the interrelationship of community and pilgrimage travel, as well as the lack of studies on it, this book seeks to address this research gap through 14 chapters divided into two parts, ‘Communities and Constestation’ and ‘Pilgrimage Shaping Communities’. To ensure diverse perspectives, case studies from different Eurasian countries, written by authors with expertise in the study of pilgrimage and religious travel, are included. Readers can expect to gain new perspectives by having a deeper comprehension of the ‘community side‘ of pilgrimage travel in Eurasia, and thus an integral understanding of contemporary pilgrimage

Download or read book Practicing Oral History Among Refugees and Host Communities written by Marella Hoffman and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-11-22 with total page 225 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Practicing Oral History among Refugees and Host Communities provides a comprehensive and practical guide to applied oral history with refugees, teaching the reader how to use applied, contemporary oral history to help provide solutions to the ‘mega-problem’ that is the worldwide refugee crisis. The book surveys the history of the practice and explains its successful applications in fields from journalism, law and psychiatry to technology, the prevention of terrorism and the design of public services. It defines applied oral history with refugees as a field, teaching rigorous, accessible methodologies for doing it, as well as outlining the importance of doing the same work with host communities. The book examines important legal and ethical parameters around this complex, sensitive field, and highlights the cost-effective, sustainable benefits that are being drawn from this work at all levels. It outlines the sociopolitical and theoretical frameworks around such oral histories, and the benefits for practitioners’ future careers. Both in scope and approach, it thoroughly equips readers for doing their own oral history projects with refugees or host communities, wherever they are. Using innovative case studies from seven continents and from the author’s own work, this manual is the ideal guide for oral historians and those working with refugees or host communities.

Book Food security resilience and well being analysis of refugees and host communities in Northern Uganda

Download or read book Food security resilience and well being analysis of refugees and host communities in Northern Uganda written by Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations and published by Food & Agriculture Org.. This book was released on 2019-02-21 with total page 78 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In August 2017, FAO was asked by the Commissioner for Refugees (Office of the Prime Minister of Uganda) to support the implementation of a socio-economic analysis within the refugees’ settlements and host communities, with the aim of providing a comprehensive assessment of the current state of the refugees’ food security, well-being and resilience. Although refugees in Uganda are given land and mobility rights, their food security remains low, with a high dependency on food aid. The assumption was that by better understanding refugees’ preferences and livelihoods strategies which determine their resilience, it would be possible to unlock the development potential of the land, increase productivity and help them achieve independence and self-reliance.

Book Socio economic Impact of Somali Refugees on the Host Community in Addis Ababa

Download or read book Socio economic Impact of Somali Refugees on the Host Community in Addis Ababa written by Kibrom Tekelwold and published by EduPedia Publications (P) Ltd. This book was released on with total page 57 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The study by Kibrom Tekelwold titled Socio-Economic Impact of Somali Refugees on the host community in Addis Ababa: a case study of Woreda 1/2 of Bole Michael (May 2013), is a timely and well constructed empirical research project using qualitative data method. The relevance of this study is that a limited amount of research has been done on the impact of large and cohesive refugee populations, who are found to be settled in host communities, with established socio-economic organisation, cultural and religious identities, and practices. The research is firmly based in relevant theoretical models which were used to construct the research tools, as well as in the analysis of the collected data. Even though the sample range is relatively small , it is reflective of the micro-district, Woreda 1/2 of Bole Michael, Addis Ababa, in which the refugee population (mainly Somali) has settled. The research study provides an empirical basis from which to understand a range of important issues related to this host community, and as a comparative research tool to be utilised within Addis Ababa, other Ethiopia cities or other urban host communities in the developing country context. Chapter 2 is based on an overview of relevant theoretical points of entry. For instance, Refugee Aid and Development Theories, and defines the empirical and methodological tools, terms and approaches to the analysis of the data. The methodological approach utilised in this research project is directed to identifying specific interest groups; for example, House and land owners, Small Business owners, and 'Chat' Sellers and other service providers. Thus, open ended questionnaire was administered to these groups with a specific focus area to collect the necessary empirical data. Chapter 3 is the analysis of the collected data, and a number of important thematic issues are revealed through the analysis of the data collected. There are specific economic cost and benefits to both refugee population and host communities. These relate to the increase in market size, but also an increase in competition for access and control over this increased market for goods and services. These cost and benefits are further stratified by the lack of, or access to resources of both the refugee and host community, the old maxim applies, "poor get poorer and the rich get richer". However, the new economic and social opportunities are being grasped by women, who had played a relatively small economic role in these substrata of Addis Ababa, and this situation is offering new economic and social opportunities to reconfigure the traditional gender roles and divides. The social and cultural effects are reflective of identity and religious profiles, and cannot be broken down to identifiable or clear patterns, as the research reflect intense integration on a micro level, to the opposite effect, the development of extreme xenophobia, dependent on individual circumstances and issues. The effects on developmental indices, for example, health, will have to be studied over a longer time frame. A possible further longitudinalstudy could be considered in this regard. Specifically, the increased use of 'Chat' over and above the population influx is indicative of behavioural change which could be problematic in the future. The study could not unpack specific patterns of social impacts, as family based interaction was shown to have taken place in some instances, but this could not be generalised. Inter-marriage in the short term was not taking place. Reasons for this were identified as mainly religious and belief differences. The handling of traditional approaches to the buying of goods and services, specifically the use of short term 'credit' prevalent in the host communities, was leading to breakdowns of trust as host communities were not finding their expectations in this regard being meet. The reasons for this were not able to be identified by the research project. In conclusion a range of negative and positive impacts on, and within, the host communities were identified. The negative impact was related to increased economic competition and the ability of the poorer elements of host community to cope with this increased cost of living and economic competition. The spread of negative social behaviour, for example, increased use of 'Chat' and the changing/ breakdown of perceived gender roles were raised as issues of concern in the host community. The different attitudes to repayment of 'credit' and problems of the collection of payment of 'rental due', were also identified as negative issue as perceived by the host community. Positive impact are also seen as the increased market size and competition, but generally by those with access to resources within the host communities, as new and greater opportunities were available to this group. The refugee populations were generally seen as peace loving and were not seen as a disruptive social group with whom the host communities are not able to coexist. The resolution of the economic, social and specifically, the problems of access to housing etc. would have to take a micro, meso and macro approach; as only a stable government in Somalia would allow the return of the refugee population to their home state. The issues of housing and the relief to the poor from the host communities would have to be resolved from the Ethiopian authorities on national, and /or municipal level with assistance from local and international NGO's and IGO's.

Book REFUGEES FOOD SECURITY AND RESILIENCE IN HOST COMMUNITIES

Download or read book REFUGEES FOOD SECURITY AND RESILIENCE IN HOST COMMUNITIES written by Mabiso, Athur and published by Intl Food Policy Res Inst. This book was released on with total page 41 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An emerging literature shows how the mass arrival of refugees induces both short- and long-term consequences to hosting countries. The main contribution of this paper is to conduct a selective review of this literature from a food-security and resilience perspective. First, the paper identifies a number of direct and indirect food-security consequences of hosting refugees. It provides a conceptual framework for discussing these various channels through which refugee inflows influence food security in the hosting countries. Second, the literature review finds that the impact of large-scale influxes of refugees on host communities and on their food security is unequally distributed among the local population.

Book The Syrian Refugee Crisis in Lebanon

Download or read book The Syrian Refugee Crisis in Lebanon written by Robert G. Rabil and published by Lexington Books. This book was released on 2016-07-29 with total page 151 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines the unfolding of the Syrian refugee crisis in relation to the spillover of the Syrian civil war in Lebanon and against the background of Lebanon–Syria relations and Lebanon’s socio-political, cultural, legal, and economic conditions. It surveys Lebanon’s response plans to the refugee crisis as part of the development of the international response plans to address the protection and needs of the Syrian refugees and Palestinian refugees from Syria, as well as the impacted host communities and institutions. At the same time, this book emphasizes the dramatic shift in popular and institutional attitudes towards the refugees as a response to and as a growth of the sheer magnitude of the refugee crisis, which made Lebanon the only country in modern history with the highest per capita concentration of refugees in the world. By examining these attitudes against the background of achievements and failures of the response plans, the impact of the crisis on state institutions on the local and national levels, and the collective consciousness of a nation barely surviving the scars of its civil war, this book not only underscores the deepening tragedy of Syrian and Palestinian refugees in Lebanon, but also the consequential tragedy of many Lebanese, who have been forced into poverty and whose livelihoods have been affected by insecurity and the almost complete collapse of social services. As a result, the tragedy of the Syrian refugee crisis has become an international crisis affecting vulnerable persons across nationalities, and, unless it is addressed diplomatically and its response plans sufficiently funded, the tragedy will only deepen across continents.

Book Tourism in Destination Communities

Book excerpt: Annotation. As a result of the ongoing growth in the tourism industry, many destinations around the world are undergoing transformations. New destinations are being 'discovered' in regions previously ignored, as people search for regions that are yet unspoiled by the ravages of mass tourism. At the same time, traditional destinations are experiencing rapid environmental, socio-cultural and economic modifications. These changes have the most effect on the destination community - the location where tourists spend their time and money, and influence development or degradation of the local environment.Tourism in Destination Communities describes both the positive and negative effects of tourism on the destination community. The chapters are divided into three sections which address the relationship between tourism and the destination community, the various impacts of tourism on the destination community and the challenges and opportunities for destination communities. Each chapter contains brief case studies and empirical examples.

Book High Stakes and Stakeholders

Download or read book High Stakes and Stakeholders written by Kenneth C. Omeje and published by Ashgate Publishing, Ltd.. This book was released on 2006 with total page 230 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nigeria is Africa's largest oil producing country. Oil generates enormous wealth but also extensive and devastating conflict in the country. High Stakes and Stakeholders critically explores the oil conflict in Nigeria, its evolution, dynamics and most significantly, the interplay and consequences of high stake politics for the reproduction and persistence of the conflict. It presents a conceptual anatomy of state-oil industry-society relations and demonstrates how the embedded material interests and accumulation patterns of different stakeholders underlie, shape and complicate both the oil conflict and security. In addition, the book provides key insights into comparable conflicts elsewhere in the global south, developing a logical framework for resolving the oil conflict in Nigeria and for reforming the security sector. This book is valuable reading material for courses in international political economy, social ecology, development studies, African politics, conflict and security studies, and environmental law and management. It will also be of interest to policy practitioners, civil societies and the oil industry.
