Book Horses Guns and Dogs Classic Reprint

Download or read book Horses Guns and Dogs Classic Reprint written by J. Otho Paget and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-02 with total page 270 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Horses, Guns and Dogs If your parents can afford to keep horses, they can probably also afford to pay men to look after them, and therefore the whole Of your holidays need not be spent in the stable. You can, however, get a rudimentary idea of the way things should be done if you ask your father's head man to give you a little instruction - how to groom a pony, how to put a saddle and bridle on, &c., for there IS a knack in performing these operations. If you are born to wealth, you may not be obliged to saddle a horse more than two or three times in your life, but, when the occasion does come, you would like to be able to do it properly. Knowledge Of all kinds is always worth acquiring, and you can never tell when it will be useful. Take the head Of the bridle in the right hand, the bit in the palm of the left, then slip your thumb in the corner Of the horse's mouth, when you will find he will open it, and the thing is done. When you take your pony out yourself, you should make a practice of trying all four feet to see if any shoes are loose, and if there are any clinches up that he might possibly cut himself with. The clinches are the ends of the nails that have been hammered down, but which work up as the shoe wears thin. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Horse and Hound The indulgence of the reader is solicited for the crudeness of style, and plain method of writ ing. No attempt having been made to make this a technical text - book, scientific or classical treat ise, but to make it as clear to the novice and be ginner as to the expert; I trust my efforts in this line may not cause the average reader to say that much more might have been entertainingly and instructively told in half as many pages. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Shire Horse: In Peace and War By those who take an interest in the world's heaviest breed of horses, as well as war news, this book may be tolerated, seeing that it deals with the old War Horse of Britain, many true descendants being actively engaged in moving tons and guns at the present time. I make no claim to having written anything new, but as a kind of pocket record of what Shire breeders, and exhibitors, have hitherto accomplished with their animals the facts herein contained may be useful, and I hope that all readers, as well as Shire breeders, will forgive any inaccuracies in my figures and all the imperfections in this my first attempt at book-writing. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Hunters Considering the large number of works in connection with horses, and the important position occupied by the hunter, it is somewhat surprising that up to the present time, so far as the author is aware, no writer has specially devoted his attention, excluding other varieties, to a description of the hunter, unless that of old-time literature, of which a great deal appeared on hunting matters, probably much more than at the present time. Other varieties of live-stock, from cattle down to poultry, have received recognition in monograph form, some pretentious, others less so, but none of them can claim a greater right to individual recognition than the subject of this treatise. As a commercial asset, the hunter ranks high, for the simple reason that its sphere of utility is linked with the most manly, as well as the most costly, form of field sports, namely, that of hunting the fox. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Horse and His Ways: Stories of Man and His Best Friend Courage and unshrinking firmness have ever been attributes of the horse. The magnificent description given in the Book of Job must be familiar to every one: - "Hast thou given the horse strength? hast thou clothed his neck with thunder? canst thou make him afraid as a grasshopper? - the glory of his strength is terrible. He paweth in the valley, and rejoiceth in his strength; he goeth on to meet the armed men. He mocketh at fear, and is not affrighted; neither turneth he back from the sword; the quiver rattleth against him - the glittering spear and the shield.
