Book On which Everything Depends

Book excerpt: Horses and mules were essential to the conduct and, ultimately, the outcome of the U.S. Civil War. Horses and mules fulfilled such important duties as hauling supplies to camp, providing the means by which the artillery was maneuvered in battle, and granting cavalry units their essential mobile capabilities. While many historians have explored the importance of the cavalry, artillery, and transportation services, the appreciation shown to the equines who were essential to these units has been relatively slim, and the logistical concerns that resulted from the units' reliance on equines are often minimized or ignored. Providing a basic level of care for millions of horses and mules affected the decisions and plans of military and civilian leaders throughout the Civil War, as did the need to procure more equines; such considerations consequently had a significant impact upon the war and its outcome. The Confederacy's inability to procure a sufficient number of horses and mules for its forces in the field, as well as the fodder they needed, eventually made it impossible for some commanders to operate effectively. Finally, the study of horses and mules and the feelings of camaraderie, gratitude, and empathy that many of the soldiers who served alongside these equines felt for them is integral to gaining a more thorough understanding of the conflict and those who lived through it. It is my hope that this work will increase the readers' understanding and appreciation of the important roles that horses and mules played in the Civil War, the myriad logistical considerations that reliance upon equines entailed, and the decisions that these logistical considerations necessitated. Such details have frequently been overlooked in historical accounts of the war; appreciating the contributions made and problems posed by equines is essential to increasing understanding of this influential American conflict.

Download or read book Horses Donkeys and Mules in the Marines written by Meish Goldish and published by Bearport Publishing. This book was released on 2012-01-01 with total page 24 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the Korean War, a horse named Reckless worked alongside U.S. Marines to carry heavy ammunition to the front lines. During one battle, Reckless made 51 trips to the front lines in a single day, and even brought wounded soldiers back to the base camp. Today, horses, donkeys, and mules help Marines who are fighting in the mountains of Afghanistan. These animals can move across rough, rocky terrain that trucks and Humvees cannot negotiate. In this book, young readers will meet the pack animals that help the U.S. Marines by carrying weapons and supplies. They'll also discover the history, training, and care of these brave working animals. Full-color photos and dramatic true tales capture the stories of these animals and their critical military missions.

Book From Horses to Horsepower

Download or read book From Horses to Horsepower written by Alexander Bielakowski and published by Fonthill Media. This book was released on 2019-09-08 with total page 333 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Following World War I, horse cavalry entered a period during which it fought for its very existence against mechanized vehicles. On the Western Front, the stalemate of trench warfare became the defining image of the war throughout the world. While horse cavalry remained idle in France, the invention of the tank and its potential for success led many non-cavalry officers to accept the notion that the era of horse cavalry had passed. During the interwar period, a struggle raged within the U.S. Cavalry regarding its future role, equipment, and organization. Some cavalry officers argued that mechanized vehicles supplanted horses as the primary means of combat mobility within the cavalry, while others believed that the horse continued to occupy that role. The response of prominent cavalry officers to this struggle influenced the form and function of the U.S. Cavalry during World War II.

Book excerpt: The last great war of the horse The role of the 'war horse' particularly during its twilight years during the First World War has recently become the focus of much interest. All armies have used horses in wartime as cavalry and mounted infantry, as officers chargers, for artillery or for transport and supply. Some large nations, because the horse formed a central role in its domestic life, became more associated with horses and horsemanship in the period when mechanised transport was making its first halting appearance onto the field of conflict. Russia was famous for its Cossacks and among the countries of the British Empire and Commonwealth the accomplished riders of Australia, New Zealand and, especially noteworthy, Canada-the home of the author of this book. Naturally, the author is concerned with the activities of the Canadian Cavalry Brigade, but his book examines in detail the role of horses in every aspect of the Great War. He was not oblivious to the suffering of horses in war though, he clearly demonstrates a great affection for them in their military role. The book concludes with pictures and vignettes of individual horses of renown in the Canadian Army and a short piece on the service of dogs. Leonaur editions are newly typeset and are not facsimiles; each title is available in softcover and hardback with dustjacket.

Book Shavetails and Bell Sharps

Download or read book Shavetails and Bell Sharps written by Emmett M. Essin and published by . This book was released on 1997 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The last U.S. Army mules were formally mustered out of the service in December 1956, ending 125 years of military reliance on the virtues of this singular animal. Much less glamorous than the cavalryman’s horse, the Army pack mule was a good deal more important: from the Mexican War through World War II, mules were an indispensable adjunct to army movement. The author has exhaustively researched the ubiquitous yet nearly invisible army mule. Through his work we learn a great deal about military procurement, transport, and supply, the bedrock on which military mobility rests.

Book Sgt Reckless

Download or read book Sgt Reckless written by Robin Hutton and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2014-07-28 with total page 321 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: New York Times Bestseller! She wasn't a horse—she was a Marine. She might not have been much to look at—a small "Mongolian mare," they called her—but she came from racing stock, and had the blood of a champion. Much more than that, Reckless became a war hero—in fact, she became a combat Marine, earning staff sergeant's stripes before her retirement to Camp Pendleton. This once famous horse, recognized as late as 1997 by Life Magazine as one of America's greatest heroes—the greatest war horse in American history, in fact—has unfortunately now been largely forgotten. But author Robin Hutton is set to change all that. Not only has she been the force behind recognizing Reckless with a monument at the National Museum of the Marine Corps and at Camp Pendleton, but she has now recorded the full story of this four-legged war hero who hauled ammunition to embattled Marines and inspired them with her relentless, and reckless, courage.

Book Where Have All the Horses Gone

Download or read book Where Have All the Horses Gone written by Jonathan V. Levin and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2017-10-18 with total page 249 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A century ago, horses were ubiquitous in America. They plowed the fields, transported people and goods within and between cities and herded livestock. About a million of them were shipped overseas to serve in World War I. Equine related industries employed vast numbers of stable workers, farriers, wainwrights, harness makers and teamsters. Cities were ringed with fodder-producing farmland, and five-story stables occupied prime real estate in Manhattan. Then, in just a few decades, the horses vanished in a wave of emerging technologies. Those technologies fostered unprecedented economic growth, and with it a culture of recreation and leisure that opened a new place for the horse as an athletic teammate and social companion.
