Download or read book Trails to Gold written by Branwen Christine Patenaude and published by Heritage House Publishing Co. This book was released on 1995 with total page 292 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The pioneer roadhouses between Clinton and Barkerville provide a living heritage of the colourful era of the Cariboo gold rush. While thousands plodded toward Barkerville dreaming of pay dirt on Williams Creek, always seeking a faster route to the motherlode, a separate breed of settlers created the shelters that would ease their journey. The trail was everchanging, and when the rush was over the Cariboo-Chilcotin was left with a mosaic of roadhouses and a legacy to build on. These structures had their own stories, tales of wild nights and human heartbreak, sagas of sin and sincerity. In the first volume of Trails to Gold, the author described the early inns, primarily south of Clinton, which preceded the construction of the Cariboo Road between 1862 and 1865. This volume completes the story of the peak years of a gold rush that British Columbia will never forget.

Download or read book Hiroshima Immigrants in Canada 1891 1941 written by Michiko Midge Ayukawa and published by University of British Columbia Press. This book was released on 2008 with total page 216 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hiroshima Immigrants in Canada, 1891-1941 is a fascinating investigation of Japanese migration to Canada prior to the Second World War. It makes Japanese-language scholarship on the subject available for the first time, and also draws on interviews, diaries, community histories, biographies, and the author’s own family history. Starting with the history of the feudal fiefs of Aki and Bingo, which were merged into Hiroshima prefecture, Ayukawa describes the political, economic, and social circumstances that precipitated emigration between 1891 and 1941. She then examines the lives and experiences of those migrants who settled in western Canada. Interviews with three generations of community members, as well as with those who never emigrated, supplement research on immigrant labour, the central role of women, and the challenges Canadian-born children faced as they navigated life between two cultures. This book is a must-read for scholars of migrations, diaspora, and transnationalism, and will also be of great interest to general readers who wish to learn more about the lives and experiences of Japanese Canadians.

This book was released on 1951 with total page 108 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The recently discovered redwood of China, "Metasequoia glyptostroboides" Hu & Cheng, shows close relationship to two North American trees, the coast redwood, "Sequoia sempervirens" Endlicher of the western U.S., & the swamp cypress, "Taxodium distichum" Richard of the Southeastern U.S. Foliage & cones of these living trees provide characters by which the three genera may be readily distinguished. But for nearly a century there has been confusion in the recognition of fossil specimens. The author is now able to distinguish the fossil foliage & cones of all three genera, & to assign to Metasequoia many specimens which have previously been identified as Sequoia & Taxodium.
