Book Horse Racing in France

Download or read book Horse Racing in France written by Professor Emeritus of Renaissance History Robert Black and published by . This book was released on 2015-08-05 with total page 404 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Horse-Racing in France: A History Circumstances rather than natural aptitude, taste, inclination, or deliberate design have made me for more than twenty years a close student of horse-racing, both English and French. Into those circumstances there is no occasion to enter, and I have not the slightest intention of being gratuitously tedious. Suffice it to say that my first experience of horse-racing carries me back more than forty years to a day of which I have still a vivid remembrance, when I saw an animal belonging to the famous Colonel (afterwards General) Peel run at a provincial race meeting; and that I believe I can still from mere memory give that animal's name (although it achieved no great celebrity) - 'I-am-not-aware.' Since then I have witnessed a great many of the most memorable races ever run, and have had at least a bowing acquaintance with some of the most notable race horses, English, French, Austro-Hungarian, German, American, and others, that ever came to the post. Book The Global Horseracing Industry

Download or read book The Global Horseracing Industry written by Phil McManus and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013 with total page 258 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Horseracing, thoroughbred breeding and gambling on racing are global industries worth several hundred billion dollars. They are also industries facing serious challenges, from the rise of alternative forms of leisure gambling to concerns about the ethical treatment of animals in all equestrian sports. This book offers a broad-ranging examination of the contemporary horseracing industry, from geographical, economic, social, ethical and environmental perspectives. The book draws on in-depth, mixed-method research into the racing and breeding industries in the US, Australia, the UK, Canada and New Zealand, and includes comparative material on other key racing centres, such as Ireland, Singapore and Hong Kong. It explores the economic structure of the global racing business, including comparisons with other major international sport businesses and other equestrian sports. It examines the social and cultural roots of the sport through its association with, and impact on, rural places, communities and environments from Kentucky to Newmarket – highlighting racing’s particular blend of tradition and scientific and technological innovation. The book also explores the ethical issues at the heart of horseracing, from reproduction to the use of the whip, and the inescapable tension between the horse as an instrumentally valuable commodity and the horse as an intrinsically valuable animal with needs and interests. The Global Horseracing Industryconcludes by considering alternative futures for this major international sports business. The book is illuminating reading for anybody with an interest in sport, business, cultural geography, animal studies, or environmental studies.

Book excerpt: Published to commemorate the reopening of a renowned equestrian museum, this book celebrates the grandeur of the horse and its presence in Chantilly. One of France's most visited monuments, the Château de Chantilly features gardens by André Le Nôtre, a world-renowned art collection, and impressive stables that were the center of 18th-century French equestrian culture and were transformed into a captivating museum in 1982. Now, under the auspices of the Aga Khan and the Foundation for the Safeguarding and Development of the Domain of Chantilly, the Museum of the Horse has undergone an extensive renovation. In addition to detailing the contents of the museum's galleries, this beautifully illustrated volume explores the important role that Chantilly has played in horse racing and hunting. It takes readers on a tour of the historic stables and surrounding grounds and, in personal essays, looks at the close ties between horse and rider through the centuries.
