Book excerpt: From Claire C. Holland, a timely collection of poetry that follows the final girl of slasher cinema - the girl who survives until the end - on a journey of retribution and reclamation. From the white picket fences of 1970s Haddonfield to the apocalyptic end of the world, Holland confronts the role of women in relation to subjects including feminism, violence, motherhood, sexuality, and assault in the world of Trump and the MeToo movement. Each poem centers on a fictional character from horror cinema, and explores the many ways in which women find empowerment through their own perceived monstrousness.

In Havana, Cuba, a widow tries to come to terms with her husband’s death—and the truth about their marriage—in Laura van den Berg’s surreal, mystifying story of psychological reflection and metaphysical mystery. Shortly after Clare arrives in Havana, Cuba, to attend the annual Festival of New Latin American Cinema, she finds her husband, Richard, standing outside a museum. He’s wearing a white linen suit she’s never seen before, and he’s supposed to be dead. Grief-stricken and baffled, Clare tails Richard, a horror film scholar, through the newly tourist-filled streets of Havana, clocking his every move. As the distinction between reality and fantasy blurs, Clare finds grounding in memories of her childhood in Florida and of her marriage to Richard, revealing her role in his death and reappearance along the way. The Third Hotel is a propulsive, brilliantly shape-shifting novel from an inventive author at the height of her narrative powers.

Book Blue Light of the Screen

Download or read book Blue Light of the Screen written by Claire Cronin and published by Watkins Media Limited. This book was released on 2020-10-13 with total page 205 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Blue Light of the Screen is a memoir about the author's obsession with horror and the supernatural. Blue Light of the Screen is about what it means to be afraid -- about immersion, superstition, delusion, and the things that keep us up at night. A creative-critical memoir of the author's obsession with the horror genre, Blue Light of the Screen embeds its criticism of horror within a larger personal story of growing up in a devoutly Catholic family, overcoming suicidal depression, uncovering intergenerational trauma, and encountering real and imagined ghosts. As Cronin writes, she positions herself as a protagonist who is haunted by what she watches and reads, like an antiquarian in an M.R. James ghost story whose sense of reality unravels through her study of arcane texts and cursed archives. In this way, Blue Light of the Screen tells the story of the author's conversion from skepticism to faith in the supernatural. Part memoir, part ghost story, and part critical theory, Blue Light of the Screen is not just a book about horror, but a work of horror itself.

Book Women Monstrosity and Horror Film

Download or read book Women Monstrosity and Horror Film written by Erin Harrington and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-08-10 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Women occupy a privileged place in horror film. Horror is a space of entertainment and excitement, of terror and dread, and one that relishes the complexities that arise when boundaries – of taste, of bodies, of reason – are blurred and dismantled. It is also a site of expression and exploration that leverages the narrative and aesthetic horrors of the reproductive, the maternal and the sexual to expose the underpinnings of the social, political and philosophical othering of women. This book offers an in-depth analysis of women in horror films through an exploration of ‘gynaehorror’: films concerned with all aspects of female reproductive horror, from reproductive and sexual organs, to virginity, pregnancy, birth, motherhood and finally to menopause. Some of the themes explored include: the intersection of horror, monstrosity and sexual difference; the relationships between normative female (hetero)sexuality and the twin figures of the chaste virgin and the voracious vagina dentata; embodiment and subjectivity in horror films about pregnancy and abortion; reproductive technologies, monstrosity and ‘mad science’; the discursive construction and interrogation of monstrous motherhood; and the relationships between menopause, menstruation, hagsploitation and ‘abject barren’ bodies in horror. The book not only offers a feminist interrogation of gynaehorror, but also a counter-reading of the gynaehorrific, that both accounts for and opens up new spaces of productive, radical and subversive monstrosity within a mode of representation and expression that has often been accused of being misogynistic. It therefore makes a unique contribution to the study of women in horror film specifically, while also providing new insights in the broader area of popular culture, gender and film philosophy.

Book Girls Like Us

  • Publisher : Alan Squire Publishing
  • Release : 2020-03
  • ISBN : 9781942892229
  • Pages : 0 pages

Download or read book Girls Like Us written by Elizabeth Hazen and published by Alan Squire Publishing. This book was released on 2020-03 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Girls Like Us is packed with fierce, eloquent, and deeply intelligent poetry focused on female identity and the contradictory personas women are expected to embody. The women in these poems sometimes fear and sometimes knowingly provoke the male gaze. At times, they try to reconcile themselves to the violence that such attentions may bring; at others, they actively defy it. Hazen's insights into the conflict between desire and wholeness, between self and self-destruction, are harrowing and wise. The predicaments confronted in Girls Like Us are age-old and universal--but in our current era, Hazen's work has a particular weight, power, and value.

Book excerpt: The poems in Emily O'Neill's You Can't Pick Your Genre endure. They riot. These poems are shining echoes from the Scream film series, but they are also warnings, testimonials, declarations. Emily O'Neill tells us, "Watch how practiced / you are, letting him practice desire on your disinterest." O'Neill re-renders the split-open bodies of women in horror films as testimonials of survival. Each poem is a reclamation, a rebirth, pulling the audience through the horror of how it feels to be acted upon as an object at a story's center. Each howling voice tells the reader, I am still here and I can never be killed.

Book 4 30 Movie

    Book Details:
  • Author : Donna Masini
  • Publisher : National Geographic Books
  • Release : 2018-05-29
  • ISBN : 0393635503
  • Pages : 0 pages

Download or read book 4 30 Movie written by Donna Masini and published by National Geographic Books. This book was released on 2018-05-29 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In highly charged, dazzling language, 4:30 Movie explores a sister’s death and the ways movies shape our imaginations. In poems that are by turns intimate and wild, provocative and tender, award-winning poet Donna Masini explores personal loss, global violence, and the consolations of art. She brings her wit, grief, fury, and propulsive energy to bear on the preoccupations of our daily lives and our attempts to bargain with endings of every kind. Equal parts lament and praise, 4:30 Movie is fueled by despair and humor, governed by the ways in which movies enter our imaginations and frame our experiences. The movie theater becomes a presiding metaphor: part waiting room, part childhood, part underground depths where the self is a bit player, riding the subway with “its engine of extras.” Masini's exquisite wordplay shows the mind wrestling ferociously to forestall grief, as if finding the right words might somehow allow us to extend our beautiful, foreshortened run.

Book America a Prophecy

    Book Details:
  • Author : William Blake
  • Publisher : Createspace Independent Publishing Platform
  • Release : 2015-12-21
  • ISBN : 9781522823155
  • Pages : 26 pages

Download or read book America a Prophecy written by William Blake and published by Createspace Independent Publishing Platform. This book was released on 2015-12-21 with total page 26 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume of premium cosmic horror contains a high-quality facsimile edition of William Blake's original handwritten masterpiece, an introduction by Aladdin Collar, a plain-text companion of the poems, and a diagrammatic interpretation of Blake's unique pantheon of gods. Told through dense verses of symbol and esoteric cosmology, America a Prophecy details a Revolutionary War on a metaphysical plane. Heralded by thirteen colonial angels, the Christ-figure called Ore champions love and passion over the primordial Albion, and Albion's demonic aspect, the terrible Urizen. America a Prophecy is one of 12 Illuminated Prophecies by Blake, which together represent the first modern mythological system. This approach to literature (the development of a unique, fictional cosmology) was later adapted by notable authors such as Lord Dunsany, JRR Tolkein, and HP Lovecraft, before being integrated into mainstream popular entertainment.
