Book excerpt: Excerpt from Hope Farm Notes Mom of these notes were originally printed in the Rural N ew-y orh'er from week to week and covering a period of about 20 years. Many readers of that maga zine have expressed the desire to have a collection of them in permanent form. It has been no easy task to make a selection and I wish to acknowledge here the great help which I have received from my daughter, Ava F. Collingwood, in arranging this matter. It has been thought best to arrange the notes in chronological order. A Hepe Farm Sermon, and Grandmother were originally printed in 1902. The others follow in the order of their original publication. The reader must understand that the children alluded to represent two distinct broods, - the second brood appearing just after the sketch entitled Transplanting the Young Idea. From the very first the object of these notes has been to picture simply and truthfully the brighter, cheerful side of Farm Life. Both grain and meat animals ad vanced a trifle not much to be sure, but enough to produce a slight p'sychic effect, as the papers say. Book excerpt: WINNER OF THE 2016 BARBARA JEFFERIS AWARD SHORTLISTED FOR THE 2016 STELLA PRIZE SHORTLISTED FOR THE 2016 MILES FRANKLIN AWARD 'They were inescapable, the tensions of the adult world — the fraught and febrile aura that surrounded Ishtar and those in her orbit, that whined and creaked like a wire pulled too tight.' It is the winter of 1985. Hope Farm sticks out of the ragged landscape like a decaying tooth, its weatherboard walls sagging into the undergrowth. Silver's mother, Ishtar, has fallen for the charismatic Miller, and the three of them have moved to the rural hippie commune to make a new start. At Hope, Silver finds unexpected friendship and, at last, a place to call home. But it is also here that, at just thirteen, she is thrust into an unrelenting adult world — and the walls begin to come tumbling down, with deadly consequences. Hope Farm is the masterful second novel from award-winning author Peggy Frew, and is a devastatingly beautiful story about the broken bonds of childhood, and the enduring cost of holding back the truth. PRAISE FOR PEGGY FREW ‘In its exploration of maternal, sexual, unrequited and platonic relationships, Hope Farm is a finely calibrated study of love, loss and belonging.’ The Sunday Age ‘Frew is a gifted writer, evidenced here by finely balanced observations and atmospheric description … Silver is poised at the beginning of adult understanding and Frew handles the challenge with deftness. Silver’s insight and compassion are juxtaposed with naivety and the idealistic force of her first crushes.’ The Weekend Australian

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Bad Day on the Farm To my fellow Farmers and the Public in general I dedicate this Little Work, with a hope, though prehaps born of weakness, that it merits a share of public patronage. And as I take this tiny Craft from the work shop of my mind, as I loosen the moorings that have held it at' 'home, and push it out as it. Were upon the sea of minds, unfurl its sails to be caught by the breezes of publiczapprobation; I am well aware that the same canvas thus spread may be met with the ad verse winds of public criticism. But whether it. Shall make a success ful voyage, he waited by propitious breezes, or whether it will be swamped among the angry billows of public condemnations, now re mains with itself. As with the material ship, it remains to its con struction, the Captain and his Crew. The Sailors on board this Craft are all', Jolly Country Lads. Their duties, their pleasures, their wit, are of the Farmer kind. The Pictures hung in its State Rooms and along its Dining Hall are Home and Country scenes. Its Cabin is furnished and decorated in a rustic manner. On the center table lays God's Word untrammeled by any Sect, which I trust is the Chart by which She sails, and thus I Launch Her upon the Great Ocean of Human Minds, asking the kind forbearance of an indulgent publicq. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One of The New York Times's 100 notable books of 2021 "[George Packer's] account of America’s decline into destructive tribalism is always illuminating and often dazzling." —William Galston, The Washington Post Acclaimed National Book Award-winning author George Packer diagnoses America’s descent into a failed state, and envisions a path toward overcoming our injustices, paralyses, and divides In the year 2020, Americans suffered one rude blow after another to their health, livelihoods, and collective self-esteem. A ruthless pandemic, an inept and malign government response, polarizing protests, and an election marred by conspiracy theories left many citizens in despair about their country and its democratic experiment. With pitiless precision, the year exposed the nation’s underlying conditions—discredited elites, weakened institutions, blatant inequalities—and how difficult they are to remedy. In Last Best Hope, George Packer traces the shocks back to their sources. He explores the four narratives that now dominate American life: Free America, which imagines a nation of separate individuals and serves the interests of corporations and the wealthy; Smart America, the world view of Silicon Valley and the professional elite; Real America, the white Christian nationalism of the heartland; and Just America, which sees citizens as members of identity groups that inflict or suffer oppression. In lively and biting prose, Packer shows that none of these narratives can sustain a democracy. To point a more hopeful way forward, he looks for a common American identity and finds it in the passion for equality—the “hidden code”—that Americans of diverse persuasions have held for centuries. Today, we are challenged again to fight for equality and renew what Alexis de Tocqueville called “the art” of self-government. In its strong voice and trenchant analysis, Last Best Hope is an essential contribution to the literature of national renewal.
