Book excerpt: Human disturbance has allowed for the reduction of diversity and species richness as it has perpetuated forest fragmentation and habitat isolation. The impact of destructive human behavior whether from logging, burning or intensive agricultural practices has forever changed Indiana’s landscape. Once abundant and expansive old growth forests are now reduced to a mosaic of disturbed and dissimilar ecosystems. The differences in syrphid diversity of Hoosier National Forest (HNF) and Morgan-Monroe and Yellowwood State (YSF) forests, as highlighted in this study, reflect the consequences of such human disturbance and fragmentation. Syrphids from HNF were collected during the 2019 Indiana Forest Alliance Ecoblitz by the use of malaise traps. These were then sorted and identified down to genera in order to be compared to syrphid diversity of Morgan-Monroe and YSF forests. Through use of JACCARD similarity index it was found that HNF and Morgan-Monroe and YSF forests were dissimilar from one another despite their neighboring locations. This dissimilarity illustrates the extent disturbance has divided Indiana’s forests in addition to our own ignorance of our forests. In creating a baseline for Syrphid diversity we attempt to alleviate some of this ignorance and instead cultivate awareness.
