Book Hong Kong in the Shadow of China

Download or read book Hong Kong in the Shadow of China written by Richard C. Bush and published by Brookings Institution Press. This book was released on 2016-10-11 with total page 395 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A close-up look at the struggle for democracy in Hong Kong. Hong Kong in the Shadow of China is a reflection on the recent political turmoil in Hong Kong during which the Chinese government insisted on gradual movement toward electoral democracy and hundreds of thousands of protesters occupied major thoroughfares to push for full democracy now. Fueling this struggle is deep public resentment over growing inequality and how the political system—established by China and dominated by the local business community—reinforces the divide been those who have profited immensely and those who struggle for basics such as housing. Richard Bush, director of the Brookings Institution’s Center on East Asia Policy Studies, takes us inside the demonstrations and the demands of the demonstrators and then pulls back to critically explore what Hong Kong and China must do to ensure both economic competitiveness and good governance and the implications of Hong Kong developments for United States policy.

Book A Concise History of Hong Kong

Download or read book A Concise History of Hong Kong written by John M. Carroll and published by Rowman & Littlefield Publishers. This book was released on 2007-06-07 with total page 283 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When the British occupied the tiny island of Hong Kong during the First Opium War, the Chinese empire was well into its decline, while Great Britain was already in the second decade of its legendary "Imperial Century." From this collision of empires arose a city that continues to intrigue observers. Melding Chinese and Western influences, Hong Kong has long defied easy categorization. John M. Carroll's engrossing and accessible narrative explores the remarkable history of Hong Kong from the early 1800s through the post-1997 handover, when this former colony became a Special Administrative Region of the People's Republic of China. The book explores Hong Kong as a place with a unique identity, yet also a crossroads where Chinese history, British colonial history, and world history intersect. Carroll concludes by exploring the legacies of colonial rule, the consequences of Hong Kong's reintegration with China, and significant developments and challenges since 1997.

Book The Last Governor

Download or read book The Last Governor written by Jonathan Dimbleby and published by Pen and Sword. This book was released on 2017-08-30 with total page 664 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “Interesting conclusions about the conduct of British foreign policy on Hong Kong . . . an extraordinary diplomatic, political and personal drama.”—Julian Stockwin, author of To the Eastern Seas 1 July 1997 marked the end of British rule of Hong Kong, whereby this territory was passed into the hands of the People’s Republic of China. In 1992, Chris Patten, former chairman of the Conservative Party, was appointed Hong Kong’s last governor, and was the man to oversee the handover ceremony of this former British colony. Within the last five years of British rule, acclaimed journalist Jonathan Dimbleby was given unique access to the governor which enabled him to document the twists and turns of this extraordinary historical moment. As Governor, Patten encouraged the necessary expansion of Hong Kong’s social welfare system, striving to reconcile the basic rights and freedom of over 6 million people with the unpredictable imperatives of Beijing. With “bracing narrative energy,” the author draws on the insights of a host of senior figures to place the crisis in both its human and historical contexts and presents some startling arguments about the conduct of British foreign policy on Hong Kong before and during Patten’s tenure (The Globe and Mail).

Book The Dynamics of Beijing Hong Kong Relations

Download or read book The Dynamics of Beijing Hong Kong Relations written by Sonny Shiu-hing Lo and published by Hong Kong University Press. This book was released on 2008-04-01 with total page 352 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book critically assesses the implementation of the "one country, two systems" in the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR) from the political, judicial, legal, economic and societal dimensions. The author contends that there has been a gradual process of mainlandization of the HKSAR, meaning that Hong Kong is increasingly economically dependent on the People's Republic of China (PRC), politically deferent to the central government on the scope and pace of democratic reforms, socially more patriotic toward the motherland and more prone to media self-censorship, and judicially more vulnerable to the interpretation of the Basic Law by the National People's Congress. This book aims to achieve a breakthrough in relating the development of Hong Kong politics to the future of mainland China and Taiwan. By broadening the focus of the "one country, two systems" from governance to the process of Sino-British negotiations and their thrust-building efforts, this book argues that the diplomats from mainland China and Taiwan can learn from the ways in which Hong Kong's political future was settled in 1982–1984. This is a book for students, researchers, scholars, diplomats and lay people.

Book excerpt: When Britain agreed to hand over Hong Kong to the People's Republic of China come 1997, officials explained that the colony had nothing to worry about: China was reforming and would allow Hong Kong to continue its dynamic capitalist ways; besides, Britain was going to leave its prize possession with a representative government up and working well beforehand. But the brain drain that started shortly thereafter--only compounded by the brutal crackdown in Tiananmen Square--makes it clear that Hong Kong people trust in neither Chinese nor British promises.

Book Congressional Policymaking in Sino U S Relations during the Post Cold War Era

Download or read book Congressional Policymaking in Sino U S Relations during the Post Cold War Era written by Joseph A Gagliano and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-09-15 with total page 201 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Conventional wisdom holds that the President enjoys the preponderance of foreign policy power, however Congress has influenced China policymaking more than is generally recognized. The legislature has demonstrated consistent interests in the realm of China policy, and it has invariably pursued those interests through law-making. During the post-Cold War period in particular, the Sino-U.S. relationship has evolved in a radically changing international environment, marked by a power transition inherent in China's rise. The development of official relations between Washington and Beijing during the Cold War occurred in the shadow of an assertive Soviet power, when the United States and China were able to find common geopolitical ground in opposing Soviet expansion while overlooking longstanding political disagreements. The dissolution of the Soviet empire, however, put the United States and China on a new geostrategic footing. Political disagreements were no longer exempted in light of a counter-Soviet strategy, and the reduction in concern for the Soviet threat allowed policymakers in Washington to more aggressively pursue trade interests that conflicted with those of China. Given this international context, this book aims to discern how Congress reconciled competing Sino-U.S. interests in a post-Cold War era, when external threats no longer dictated an apparent hierarchy that favored China over the Soviet Union. This work will be of interest to students and scholars of US foreign policy, China Studies and international relations in general.
