Book Honeybees and Honey Production in the United States Classic Reprint

Download or read book Honeybees and Honey Production in the United States Classic Reprint written by Samuel Augustus Jones and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-01-30 with total page 66 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Honeybees and Honey Production in the United States The large number of bees indicated in the Southeastern States and particularly in the Appalachian section, while reflecting an undoubted fact, carries an impression stronger than the facts warrant, partially because the territory, is predominantly rural, but more because in that region the colonies are, to a greater extent than elsewhere, kept in small boxes, kegs, and similar receptacles which limit the size of the colony and cause heavy swarming. This latter fact tended to further exaggeration because at the time the census was taken swarming was well advanced in the South though hardly begun in the North. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Beekeeping: A Discussion of the Life of the Honeybee and of the Production of Honey It has seemed desirable in the early chapters to discuss bees as they exist without man's interference, thus giving the foun dation on which the practice of. Beekeeping rests. The bee keeper is not especially interested in the anatomy of the bee and, while it is necessary to use illustrations of various organs and to describe them briefly, an effort has been made to treat the bee as a living animal and to have the discussion deal with physiology and especially with activities, in so far as investi gations have thrown light on these processes. In the prepara tion of the chapters devoted to the management of the apiary, an effort has been made to present the various systems of manipulations in such a way that the underlying principles shall be evident, rather than to attempt to describe each sys tem as if it were separate. This book was released on 2017-12-11 with total page 68 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Honey and Pollen Plants of the United States There are probably few places where some surplus honey cannot be obtained if the bees are properly managed. Greater profit might result if beekeepers gave more attention to the honey flow in the vicinity of their apiaries, since locations only a few miles apart have been found to produce honey crops varying considerably in size. The value of a new location may be determined by placing a few colonies there and observing the results for 2 or 3 years. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Book of the Honey Bee Beekeeping is also a centre, a starting point, from which many delightful roads radiate; and creates a stimulus for increased knowledge, not only of the habits and life history of the little creatures who so delightfully minister both to our pleasure and profit, but also of the truly marvellous part they (with other allied insects) play in the economy of nature. Probably no other pursuit is calculated to bring one into intimate touch with nature at so many points as is beekeeping. To the gardener, the fruit-grower especially, bees are an absolute necessity. This book was released on 2017-12-07 with total page 22 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Heat Production of Honeybees in Winter In considering the circumstances on this last day-of the experi ment with bees it is interesting to recall observations made in the study Of the effect Of ventilation on men, that the sensations produced by bad 7air are not experienced when the air is stirred. If this indicates an actual cliflerence in physiological conditions in the di mer ent circumstances, then it is not inconceivable that something analo gous to this was true Of the bees on this day. The stirring Of the air when the circulation was resumed may have served to remove some cause Of depression that was e mective when the circulation was stopped.' Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The American Bee Journal, 1884, Vol. 20: Devoted to Scientific Bee-Culture and Honey Production The Cure sung vespers while I rested myself, and then the old horse and chariot was brought out. Seated in it, I found the Cure wished to speed me on my return journey all he could, and at the same time show me a sight never to be forgotten. He drove me through a forest where the heather was in full bloom, and, in a secluded hidden spot, he showed me some half dozen lar e straw hives (certainly the largest I ave ever seen.) They were crammed full of bees and honey. Thousands of bees, idle for want of room, and around me such a mass of floral wealth as I think I have never seen equalled. Those only who have seen the heather in full bloom, in all its lory, can appreciate the reasons for t e annual migrations of bees and hives that take place in France and Germany. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Honey Bee The honey bee may well be counted as a friend of the human race, since besides furnishing large quantities of the most health ful sweet known, the commercial importance of which at this day is by no means insignificant, it is also of great value as a fertil izing agent to many of the crops produced by the farmer and horticulturist, obtaining results which could not otherwise be secured. Beekeeping on a commercial scale is far from being a royal road to wealth as pictured by some, but requires as much labor, diligence and attention to details as many other lines of business. However, the thorough going apiarist, well adapted and educated to the business, given a good location and a favorable season, usually has no complaint to offer. As along other agricultural lines, weather conditions often exert an adverse in uence and poor seasons intervene, which necessitate extra care, fortitude and enthusiasm on the part of the beekeeper, to safely bridge them over. Book Beekeeping in the South

Download or read book Beekeeping in the South written by Kennith Hawkins and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-12-07 with total page 130 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Beekeeping in the South: A Handbook on Seasons, Methods and Honey Flora of the Fifteen Southern States An impression gained is that beekeeping operations differ but little in the South from those in vogue elsewhere, except mainly in the time of their application. We have little criticism of methods in vogue in the South, except the lack of winter protection of any sort in too much of this region. Box hives are too prevalent in many areas of the South, but so they are in the North. An impression of southern beekeepers is their eagerness to learn modern methods, where they happen to be unknown, and to put them into practice.
