Book Honey and pollen flora of South Eastern Australia

Download or read book Honey and pollen flora of South Eastern Australia written by Dr. Douglas Somerville and published by NSW Agriculture. This book was released on 2020-01-14 with total page 676 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This PDF book is best viewed on a desktop or tablet. Understanding the biology of flora and its value to honey bees is the core foundation for successful beekeeping. Bees feed on nectar and pollen. No food equals no bees! The flowers on which bees forage have a major impact on stocking rates and the level of nutrition available to the colony, two subjects that need to be understood for a beekeeper to be successful. Whether a beekeeper owns one hive or a thousand, the principle is the same. Floral resources within Australia underpin so many systems and animal species. Building knowledge and understanding of what they are, and how they are adapting to a changing climate, is a critical field of scientific endeavour. This publication is part of the journey to focus on the value of plants to nectarivores and honey bees in particular. The result of over 30 years of research, it distils both scientific knowledge and the opinions of hundreds of beekeepers into a reference work that will be the cornerstone of floral understanding in apiculture for years to come. Supported by over 350 photographs and drawings, each action to be performed is explained in detail with photographs showing the steps as well as the final result. Many potential beekeepers are unclear about the equipment they need to buy and how to obtain their first colony of bees. The first chapters in the book explain in detail the equipment needed as well as equipment that may be useful later on as their confidence and experience grows. The chapter ‘Your First Bees’ explains how to obtain bees, where to locate them in the garden, and the basics of colony management. In addition to chapters on keeping bees, there are detailed chapters on the life cycle of the honey bee, extracting honey, the bee-friendly garden, entering honey in competitions, native bees and rearing queens. The result is a comprehensive manual that includes material not available in other Australian, North American or European books and is the ultimate Australian reference source.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from American Honey Plants: Together With Those Which Are of Special Value to the Beekeeper as Sources of Pollen In the first volume of American Bee Journal, published in 1861, appears a plea for the publication of a volume devoted to the honey flora of America. In numerous instances since that time, writers have mentioned the great need of a work of this kind. In common with other students of beekeeping, the author came to feel this lack in our beekeeping literature. This book is an attempt to fill that need. It is to be expected that the first work on this great subject will overlook many things which should have been included and that numerous errors should creep in. In an attempt to gather the desired material, the author has visited the important beekeeping regions from the Atlantic Coast to California and from Canada to Florida and Texas. Careful notes have been made of the honey plants of each section as indicated by the many beekeepers with whom the author has come in contact. To this multitude of beekeepers who have thus assisted by furnishing notes of this kind the author is greatly indebted. The literature of beekeeping has been carefully examined for references to honey plants, and hundreds of quotations appear in the text. The illustrations are for the most part from the author's original photographs, although a number have been borrowed from the American Bee Journal, which appeared in that publication, from John H. Lovell, Homer Mathewson, J. M. Buchanan, M. C. Richter, C. D. Stuart, Florida Photographic Concern, Wesley Foster, W. A. Pryal, and some others, the identity of the originator of which are lost. Since most of the readers of this book will be men who are not accusnomed to botanical classification, it has been thought best to treat each plant under the name by which it is most widely known, giving other names as cross references, and to treat all in alphabetical order. Numerous related subjects which seemed to have a place in a book of this kind, such as nectar and nectar secretion, poisonous honey, propolis, pollination, weather and honey production, etc., have been likewise included in proper alphabetical order. No one is likely to be more conscious of the shortcomings of the volume than is the author. As it is his hope to expand the scope of the work in a later edition, he will be grateful for notes on additions and corrections from all parts of America. Download or read book Pollen Grains Honeydew written by Margaret Anne Adams and published by . This book was released on 2021-12-07 with total page 350 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book describes, in detail, a simple approach for beekeepers, to identify the plant sources of their own honey. They will occasionally find they have a special honey, and then the jars can be labelled accordingly. From 2019 to 2021, beekeepers from The UK and Continental Europe sent me samples of their honey, and the collection of digital photos from my own pollen slides, helped me to identify most of the pollens in their honey. These pollens and the honeydews found in most summer honey, feature in this book. Christine Coulsting has contributed a section, describing how she deals with identifying pollens, found in her honey, but not in her pollen slide collection. Alan Riach's section details the calculations needed to proportion the pollens found in a sample of honey, to the flowers' nectar contributions.
