Download or read book The Work of Art written by Gérard Genette and published by Cornell University Press. This book was released on 1997 with total page 292 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What art is--its very nature--is the subject of this book by one of the most distinguished continental theorists writing today. Informed by the aesthetics of Nelson Goodman and referring to a wide range of cultures, contexts, and media, The Work of Art seeks to discover, explain, and define how art exists and how it works. To this end, Gérard Genette explores the distinction between a work of art's immanence--its physical presence--and transcendence--the experience it induces. That experience may go far beyond the object itself.Genette situates art within the broad realm of human practices, extending from the fine arts of music, painting, sculpture, and literature to humbler but no less fertile fields such as haute couture and the culinary arts. His discussion touches on a rich array of examples and is bolstered by an extensive knowledge of the technology involved in producing and disseminating a work of art, regardless of whether that dissemination is by performance, reproduction, printing, or recording. Moving beyond examples, Genette proposes schemata for thinking about the different manifestations of a work of art. He also addresses the question of the artwork's duration and mutability.

Download or read book The Revolution of the Saints written by Michael Walzer and published by Harvard University Press. This book was released on 1982 with total page 358 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Revolution of the Saints is a study, both historical and sociological, of the radical political response of the Puritans to disorder. It interprets and analyzes Calvinism as the first modern expression of an unremitting determination to transform on the basis of an ideology the existing political and moral order. Michael Walzer examines in detail the circumstances and ideological options of the Puritan intelligentsia and gentry. He sees Puritanism, in sharp contrast to some generally accepted views, as the political theory of intellectuals and gentlemen attempting to create a new government and society.

Download or read book South Indian Horizons written by Collectif and published by Institut français de Pondichéry. This book was released on 2022-04-21 with total page 702 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume, a tribute to François Gros and a celebration of the field of Tamil studies, demonstrates the international nature of this area and its wide range of topics. The contributors stem from sixteen different countries. They are literary historians and critics, philologists, linguists, cultural anthropologists, political and social historians, archaeologists, epigraphists, numismatists, art and architecture historians, some of them assuming two of these guises, and some having an interest in related languages: Irula, Kannada, Malayalam and Telugu. However there is much linkage and this "connexité dans la diversité" binds the different contributions together. François Gros has been the principal standard-bearer for Tamil studies in France. He has also devoted himself to the re-establishment of the École Française d’Extrême-Orient in countries of Southeast Asia. Among his other responsibilities has been the directorship for Tamil studies at the Institut Français in Pondicherry.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: IL PRIMO VOLUME DELLA VERSIONE ILLUSTRATA DEL BESTSELLER INTERNAZIONALE SULLA STORIA DELL’UOMO.

Download or read book Homo Sapiens written by George Soli and published by . This book was released on 2002 with total page 142 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Through a concise and sequential analysis of both historical and scientific events, the author, a biological scientist, points out that the human species has not evolved ethically and intellectually as much as scientifically and technologically, since the time of ancient Greece. Man has now placed himself into a situation unlike any other in history. For the first time, with his actions, he is threatening the very existence of life on the planet. Especially now when weapons of mass destruction are increasingly available to anybody who wants them, a perilous predicament has been set. Homo sapiens may have reached a final stage that will lead to its disappearance. Soli proposes what could be an effective solution for that predicament: Man can free himself of conceptual boundaries and decide to evolve. He calls the process "forced evolution" and he suggests ways to achieve it. He believes that the process will be successful, because the motivating force behind the decision to evolve will be a rational fear of extinction.
