She is taken in by her aunt, and soon finds out who is really riding for her and who is just around because they fear the wrath of Aunt Ruby. Making a deal with the devil doesn't seem all that bad when you're sitting on top of the world, with endless amounts of money and designer everything, but it's not long before her beloved Aunt Ruby is snatched away from her. Mecca is forced to fend for herself. She learns to play with the hand she was dealt, but who will be left standing in the end? In Mecca's world, everyone is suspect, and no one can be trusted, not even family. When the truth is revealed to her, it is up to Mecca to decide if she'll do the right thing and lead a life of righteousness, or continue to walk down the same dark path as her aunt.

Download or read book Homeless written by Joshua D. Phillips and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2016-10-03 with total page 207 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A half-century after the "War on Poverty" of Lyndon Johnson, poverty rates remain unchanged. Scholars have advanced polarized theories about the causes of poverty, as politicians have debated how (or if) to fund welfare programs. Yet little research has been conducted where the poor are provided a platform to speak on their own behalf. While it is important to understand how economic systems affect the homeless, it is equally important to learn about the day-to-day realities faced by those who rely on public policies for survival. Drawing on the author's experience working in the homeless community, this book presents some of their stories of loss, abuse, addiction, and marginalization through interviews, observations, and ethnographic research.

Book Homelessness in the Classroom

Download or read book Homelessness in the Classroom written by Kerri Tobin and published by Dio Press Incorporated. This book was released on 2024-01-30 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There are over 1.5 million homeless students in U.S. schools, a number expected to rise as a result of Covid-19. Research on this population has existed since the 1980s, but most teachers are unaware of the unique needs of these highly vulnerable students or the laws that exist to protect them. Although they primarily need housing, students experiencing homelessness also need responsive school environments. In language accessible to busy practitioners, this book presents research on homelessness as it impacts children in school and lays out for teachers what is known, and as yet unknown, about how best to serve these students in K-12 and as they prepare for what comes next. Perfect for courses that aim to provide pre-service teachers with proven strategies for reaching underserved student populations.

Book The Eternal State of Homelessness

Download or read book The Eternal State of Homelessness written by Vinoo Jain and published by Anti-Chri$. This book was released on 2020-12-31 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Eternal State of Homelessness parallels the plight and suffering of the homeless individuals we see around us with what eternal homelessness must be like. Their plight and suffering serve a purpose; they paint a vivid picture of what our eternal existence might be like if we do not stop, take notice, and prepare accordingly. This book describes the consequences of not playing by ironic rules associated with a level playing field. These upside down rules bring ultimate balance and justice to the Universe. On this level playing field, amongst mortals Death is batting a thousand. As such, a day is coming where role reversal will occur where their suffering now, though temporary, may provide them with an eternal home, and our comfort now, though temporary, may reward us with eternal homelessness. To be fair, the homeless should hold up cardboard signs that say, "Behold, I am a picture of what you may one day become. My suffering is but for a moment; yours is for eternity."

Book Homeless Hero

  • ISBN : 1458210642
  • Pages : 285 pages

Download or read book Homeless Hero written by Mike Tapscott and published by Abbott Press. This book was released on 2013-07 with total page 285 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Homeless Hero: Understanding the Soul of Home considers the human mission to know the soul and navigate life experiences. When pain and emptiness show up in life, only those who undertake the hero's journey grow into a place of understanding where they can then flourish. Mike Tapscott was watching a movie at a resource center for homeless people when he developed the idea for this book. The movie workshop at Lodestar Day Resource Center in Phoenix, Arizona, teaches life's lessons through the magic of cinema. The lessons manifest through a series of dramatic events: hearing a call to adventure; refusing the call; crossing a threshold; encountering tests, allies and enemies; being unable to turn back; soul searching; finding reward; returning with the story; and experiencing resurrection. These events are what life is all about. The hero's journey through homelessness--just one symptom of the challenge of overcoming emotional pain--is one way to help change individuals and then change tracks, patterns, and less-than-constructive behaviors. Here is a compilation of experiences from Tapscott's 36-hour experimental journey into life on the streets, his own volunteer work and through interviews with employees in the social service system, other volunteers and homeless individuals. Homeless Hero is a case study, an experiment, an adventure, and a multi-layered examination of American society that seeks to help you understand the moving picture of your own hero's journey.

Book Homeless

    Book Details:
  • Author : Ella Howard
  • Publisher : University of Pennsylvania Press
  • Release : 2013-01-09
  • ISBN : 0812208269
  • Pages : 289 pages

Download or read book Homeless written by Ella Howard and published by University of Pennsylvania Press. This book was released on 2013-01-09 with total page 289 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The homeless have the legal right to exist in modern American cities, yet antihomeless ordinances deny them access to many public spaces. How did previous generations of urban dwellers deal with the tensions between the rights of the homeless and those of other city residents? Ella Howard answers this question by tracing the history of skid rows from their rise in the late nineteenth century to their eradication in the mid-twentieth century. Focusing on New York's infamous Bowery, Homeless analyzes the efforts of politicians, charity administrators, social workers, urban planners, and social scientists as they grappled with the problem of homelessness. The development of the Bowery from a respectable entertainment district to the nation's most infamous skid row offers a lens through which to understand national trends of homelessness and the complex relationship between poverty and place. Maintained by cities across the country as a type of informal urban welfare, skid rows anchored the homeless to a specific neighborhood, offering inhabitants places to eat, drink, sleep, and find work while keeping them comfortably removed from the urban middle classes. This separation of the homeless from the core of city life fostered simplistic and often inaccurate understandings of their plight. Most efforts to assist them centered on reforming their behavior rather than addressing structural economic concerns. By midcentury, as city centers became more valuable, urban renewal projects and waves of gentrification destroyed skid rows and with them the public housing and social services they offered. With nowhere to go, the poor scattered across the urban landscape into public spaces, only to confront laws that effectively criminalized behavior associated with abject poverty. Richly detailed, Homeless lends insight into the meaning of homelessness and poverty in twentieth-century America and offers us a new perspective on the modern welfare system.

Download or read book Hostel Hell written by Robert Leslie and published by . This book was released on 2019-09-02 with total page 282 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Suddenly you're homeless - what's the worst that can happen? Here's my year of No Fixed Address spent with crazies, druggies, con men, prostitutes and a surprising number of really decent people. Be prepared - I wasn't. An unwanted divorce led to the loss of my house and business, bringing on stress, depression, low self-esteem and, I'm ashamed to say, heavy drinking. In that state finding a solution to the multiple problems in my life was more than I could handle. When you are down, your focus is just getting through each day. I had naively believed that the welfare society would offer broad help; what I painfully discovered was that there is a multi-stage filtering with hurdles through which you have to navigate blindfold - there is no guide which tells you what to expect. I hope that in some measure my book offers that. But for all the feelings of fear, inadequacy and hopelessness there were some compensations. I met a rich array of people, out-and-out crazies, druggies, smart crooks, devious prostitutes and heard some amazing stories. And to my great surprise a number of these individuals were kind, friendly and helpful. The whole experience changed my politics and view of the world. Don't think homelessness could not happen to you, it can to anybody.
