The old-fashioned town square with the aged brick buildings, locally owned shops and gracious people take you back to a more relaxed, welcoming time in history. Whether you grew up in the Low Country, or recently moved to the area or are just passing through, you'll find the town of Summerville charming. Many interesting people have made Summerville home. Home Sweet Home looks back into the history of people and places that laid the foundation for this great Southern town. You'll find out about Guerin's Pharmacy, the oldest Pharmacy in South Carolina, Alexander's Dry Goods Store, and the history of various homes and churches. Summerville has a rich history that explains why so many people are proud to call it home, even today. The book is divided into chapters you can read at leisure. The town was founded in 1696 in Old Dorchester and moves through the years to 1847 when Summerville became a town; the great earthquake of 1886 with the epicenter right here in Summerville became known as the Charleston Earthquake. This book is a must read for anyone with an interest in the history of quaint, southern towns, such as Summerville.

Book Confederate Sheet Music

    Book Details:
  • Author : E. Lawrence Abel
  • Publisher : McFarland
  • Release : 2015-06-14
  • ISBN : 1476606382

Download or read book Confederate Sheet Music written by E. Lawrence Abel and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2015-06-14 with total page 265 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the American Civil War, songs united and inspired people on both sides. The North had a well-established music publishing industry when the war broke out, but the South had no such industry. The importance of music as an expression of the South's beliefs was obvious; as one music publisher said, "The South must not only fight her own battles but sing her own songs and dance to music composed by her own children." Southern entrepreneurs quickly rose to the challenge. This reference book is distinguished by three major differences from previously published works. First, it lists sheet music that is no longer extant (and listed nowhere else). Second, it gives complete lyrics for all extant songs, a rich source for researchers. And third, a brief historical background has been provided for many of the songs. Each entry provides as much of the following as possible (staying faithful to the typography of each title page): the title as published, names of all lyricists, composers and publishers; dates of publication; cities of publication; and if applicable, the names of catalogs or magazines in which the song appeared. Music published in Southern cities under Federal occupation is excluded.

Book excerpt: From the 2-time Tony Award-winner and the star of TV’s Younger, funny and intimate stories and reflections about how crafting has kept her sane while navigating the highs and lows of family, love, and show business (and how it can help you, too). Whether she’s playing an “age-defying” book editor on television or dazzling audiences on the Broadway stage, Sutton Foster manages to make it all look easy. How? Crafting. From the moment she picked up a cross stitch needle to escape the bullying chorus girls in her early performing days, she was hooked. Cross stitching led to crocheting, crocheting led to collages, which led to drawing, and so much more. Channeling her emotions into her creations centered Sutton as she navigated the significant moments in her life and gave her tangible reminders of her experiences. Now, in this charming and poignant collection, Sutton shares those moments, including her fraught relationship with her agoraphobic mother; a painful divorce splashed on the pages of the tabloids; her struggles with fertility; the thrills she found on the stage during hit plays like Thoroughly Modern Millie, Anything Goes, and Violet; her breakout TV role in Younger; and the joy of adopting her daughter, Emily. Accompanying the stories, Sutton has included crochet patterns, recipes, and so much more! Witty and poignant, Hooked will leave readers entertained as well as inspire them to pick up their own cross stitch needles and paintbrushes.
