Book excerpt: If you are thinking about building a new home & think you may like living in the round, then this book is for you. Written from first hand experience, two of the authors each live in a dome home. The third author, in the business of remodeling conventional type homes, responded to the distress call during the building of a dome. The result: a very informative book, easy & delightful to read. Aside from a very brief history of domes as residences & a comparative description of the three primary modern dome types, the focus of the book is the Monolithic Dome: its characteristics, basic construction, choices in shapes, exterior design elements. The remaining chapters cover the equally practical considerations on architects, contractors & contracting, building in a rural area, financing & insurance. Tips & red alerts are sprinkled throughout the book. This book is a one-stop introduction to essential considerations to arm the reader before, not after the fact, with information & suggestions. The text is amply referenced & illustated.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The only comprehensive, illustrated, step-by-step guide to building with earthbags. Over seventy percent of Americans cannot afford to own a code-enforced, contractor-built home. This has led to widespread interest in using natural materials-straw, cob, and earth-for building homes and other buildings that are inexpensive, and that rely largely on labor rather than expensive and often environmentally-damaging outsourced materials. Earthbag Building is the first comprehensive guide to all the tools, tricks, and techniques for building with bags filled with earth-or earthbags. Having been introduced to sandbag construction by the renowned Nader Khalili in 1993, the authors developed this "Flexible Form Rammed Earth Technique" over the last decade. A reliable method for constructing homes, outbuildings, garden walls and much more, this enduring, tree-free architecture can also be used to create arched and domed structures of great beauty-in any region, and at home, in developing countries, or in emergency relief work. This profusely illustrated guide first discusses the many merits of earthbag construction, and then leads the reader through the key elements of an earthbag building: Special design considerations Foundations, walls, and floors Electrical, plumbing, and shelving Lintels, windows and door installations Roofs, arches and domes Exterior and interior plasters. With dedicated sections on costs, making your own specialized tools, and building code considerations, as well as a complete resources guide, Earthbag Building is the long-awaited, definitive guide to this uniquely pleasing construction style. Book The Dnr Trilogy

Download or read book The Dnr Trilogy written by Don W. Hill M.D. and published by Archway Publishing. This book was released on 2018-10-17 with total page 408 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: J. D. Brewster is a bright medical student whose promising career is teetering on the edge of disaster. After the head nurse on the medical/surgical unit dies from complications of injuries sustained in a vicious botched carjacking attempt, Brewster becomes demoralized. Sadly, the one person who tried to protect him from the dangerous pitfalls of the arduous clinical clerkship rotations was now gone. Forced to abandon his scientific research projects through no fault of his own, Brewster finds himself in a no-win situation as the pervasive culture of the Gulf Coast College of Medicine and University Hospital is brutal and unforgiving toward medical students. As a consequence to unrelenting and dehumanizing emotional abuse, Brewster and his colleagues become not only callous and largely indifferent to human suffering, but also cruel and fully capable of dispensing retribution when perceived appropriate. The occult “clinical justice” system hidden within the bowels of the university turned out to be much more than just an unsubstantiated rumor whispered amongst the naïve medical students and members of the medical staff. The system of vigilante law and order has become fully manifest, and it is indeed a frightening entity to behold. Brewster is now evolving into an avenger who willingly participates in what he believes to be righteously sanctioned punishment dispensed to those who violate the laws that constitute the very fabric of social order. In this continuing tale, a young student at the Texas Medical Center in Houston is confronted with the intertwining world of healthcare and the dark and evil forces lurking within the encroaching shadows of moral decay.

Book A Better Way to Build

Download or read book A Better Way to Build written by Michael R. Adamson and published by Purdue University Press. This book was released on 2013-01-15 with total page 399 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: While architects have been the subject of many scholarly studies, we know very little about the companies that built the structures they designed. This book is a study in business history as well as civil engineering and construction management. It details the contributions that Charles J. Pankow, a 1947 graduate of Purdue University, and his firm have made as builders of large, often concrete, commercial structures since the company's foundation in 1963. In particular, it uses selected projects as case studies to analyze and explain how the company innovated at the project level. The company has been recognized as a pioneer in "design-build," a methodology that involves the construction company in the development of structures and substitutes negotiated contracts for the bidding of architects' plans. The Pankow companies also developed automated construction technologies that helped keep projects on time and within budget. The book includes dozens of photographs of buildings under construction from the company's archive and other sources. At the same time, the author analyzes and evaluates the strategic decision making of the firm through 2004, the year in which the founder died. While Charles Pankow figures prominently in the narrative, the book also describes how others within the firm adapted the business so that the company could survive a commercial market that changed significantly as a result of the recession of the 1990s. Extending beyond the scope of most business biographies, this book is a study in industry innovation and the power of corporate culture, as well as the story of one particular company and the individuals who created it.
