Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Building Sharjah reveals how modern architecture unfurled across the United Arab Emirates’ third-largest city. An oil discovery in 1972 positioned Sharjah as one of the world’s final cities shaped by transformative fortune. In the footsteps of Kuwait, Riyadh, and Dubai, Sharjah faced a metamorphosis: either one that repeated the past’s mistakes or one that reimagined how wealth can build a city. Sharjah’s potential enticed an international cast of experts to create a bold, new city. As their projects begin to vanish, this book preserves them through unseen photographs and recovered documents. New writing chronicles how local and arriving residents arranged the designed, concrete environment into a home. Beyond just a local artifact, this book examines the confident promises made by global practices of urbanization.

Abstract: Abstract This research study presents an analytical picture of the development of home-school partnership in a special secondary school. Some successful practices as well as conflicts are outlined to give the readers an understanding on how they can start or continue their journey to home-school partnership. Home-school partnership is one of the characteristics of quality home-school relationships. Research studies find that when parents take part in school activities, their children demonstrate more positive attitudes towards school and develop good habits in learning. While findings supporting parental involvement are demonstrated, barriers to home-school collaboration will be pinpointed in this report to show the difficulties encountered by most schools. Different theoretical frameworks of parental involvement, home-school relationships and parental roles are respectively described in this study. Another significant theme of this study is recognition and appreciation of the diversity in the schools and families in the community. The increasing diversity among families today puts further emphasis on the need for home-school communication to clarify possible differences of opinion about the values and practices that foster children's success in school. Example will be given to explain this point by describing how the writer's school worked together with the parents to go through the crisis of Severe Acute Respiratory 4Syndrome (SARS) in 2003. What we discover is that effective partnerships in diverse communities not only enhance children's achievement, but extend opportunities for the school to function as a site for learning and support for adults. This study presents a review of much that the writer has learned and experienced in working with his colleagues, students and their parents in a skills opportunity school. The nature of the barriers that stand in the way of home-school partnerships and the ways to diminish these barriers will be uncovered. The study also provides a vision of home-school relationships in which parents and educators forge an alliance to create better schools and to support the success of all children in school. It is hoped that the study will propose some thoughts to help more educators take steps along the path toward home-school collaboration. It is envisaged that this ethnographic study of home-school partnership will provide an inspirational mirror for those who are concerned about parental involvement. Book The Operation of Cooperative Education for Homeschooled Children

Download or read book The Operation of Cooperative Education for Homeschooled Children written by Hanna Maria Muldowney and published by . This book was released on 2011 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Homeschooling is a growing trend in America. Studies on homeschooling in the past three decades have focused on the reasons why parents choose to homeschool, the academic and social quality of homeschooling, and the perceptions of public and private school officials towards homeschooling, as well as homeschooling parents' perceptions of public and private schools. The literature on homeschool cooperatives is scarce. A homeschool cooperative (co-op) is a group of homeschooling parents who have gathered to collectively teach their children. Co-ops might teach core subjects, electives, athletics, or just serve as an opportunity for homeschooling families to gather for fellowship and social time. This dissertation is a study of a homeschool co-op in San Antonio, Texas. The researcher for this study attempted to answer two questions: 1) What is a history of the co-op, and 2) What are the daily operations of the co-op? This researcher observed the selected co-op in action, reviewed documents supplied by co-op members, and interviewed four members of the co-op who have varying degrees of participation in the co-op. Through triangulation of interviews, observations, and documents, this researcher has described a history of the selected co-op, including its founding and daily operations. The co-op, formed in 2005, is a large, Catholic-affiliated co-op that meets weekly for twelve weeks each semester. The teachers, all paid, are either parents of co-op students or individuals hired from outside the co-op. Students in the co-op have twenty to twenty-five courses from which to choose each semester. The participants in the study are satisfied with their experiences in the Quality Homeschool Co-op. The participants state that the co-op is providing quality academic classes that supplement the curricula used at home. The participants are also pleased with the positive socialization that their children receive while attending the co-op. This study adds to the literature on homeschooling cooperatives. Although further research on this study is possible based on different research questions, this researcher has presented a history of Quality Homeschool Co-op and has documented the co-op's daily operations.
