Download or read book Home is Where the Mic Is written by Poefficient Vundla and published by African Books Collective. This book was released on 2017-12-29 with total page 190 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This anthology presents the work of twenty-four young Spoken Word poets from South Africa, with a sprinkling of guests from the United States, Britain and Australia. The experience of black youth in societies polarized by racism, inequality and gender violence whilst, at the same time, struggling to come to terms with love, sex and all the other basic needs of young people makes for fascinating reading. The inventive graphic layout is a fine addition to a stand out volume. Home is Where the Mic Is was conceived as a collaboration with Word n Sound, a popular Johannesburg Spoken Word platform. The intention was to give hitherto only stage poets an opportunity to test their work on the page and confound the Eurocentric critics of the new wave of performance poetry who decry its energy and breaking down of artificial definitions of poetry. This is South African poetry standing on it's own two feet!

Download or read book Hanguk Hip Hop written by Myoung-Sun Song and published by Springer. This book was released on 2019-04-25 with total page 202 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How has Hanguk (South Korean) hip hop developed over the last two decades as a musical, cultural, and artistic entity? How is hip hop understood within historical, sociocultural, and economic matrices of Korean society? How is hip hop represented in Korean media and popular culture? This book utilizes ethnographic methods, including fieldwork research and life timeline interviews with fifty-three influential hip hop artists, in order to answer these questions. It explores the nuanced meaning of hip hop in South Korea, outlining the local, global, and (trans)national flows of musical and cultural exchanges. Throughout the chapters, Korean hip hop is examined through the notion of buran—personal and societal anxiety or uncertainty—and how it manifests in the dimensions of space and place, economy, cultural production, and gender. Ultimately, buran serves as a metaphoric state for Hanguk hip hop in that it continuously evolves within the conditions of Korean society.

Download or read book Volunteer Tourism written by Mary Mostafanezhad and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-02-17 with total page 176 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Crossing disciplinary and chronological boundaries, Volunteer Tourism: Popular Humanitarianism in Neoliberal Times is the first full-length treatment of volunteer tourism from a longitudinal ethnographic perspective. Volunteer tourism, one of the fastest growing niche tourism markets in the world, is a type of tourism in which tourists pay to participate in conservation, humanitarian or development oriented projects. Volunteer Tourism is a comprehensive and comparative study of the perspectives of Thai host community members, NGO practitioners and international volunteer tourists. The book thus shines an ethnographic lens onto the complexities and contradictions of the volunteer tourism experience in northern Thailand. Drawing on cross-disciplinary perspectives in geography and anthropology as well as development, tourism and cultural studies, Volunteer Tourism illustrates how a focus on sentimentality in the volunteer tourism encounter obscures the structural inequalities on which the experience is based. Such a focus situates volunteer tourism within the commodification and sentimentalization of development and global justice agendas, which hail the new moral consumer and reframe questions of structural inequality as questions of individual morality. As a result, albeit inadvertently, the practice of volunteer tourism serves the continued expansion of the cultural logics and economic practices of neoliberalism.
