Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Thematically focused analysis of modern architecture throughout Texas with gorgeous photographs illustrating works by famous and lesser-known architects. In the mid-twentieth century, dramatic social and political change coincided with the ascendance and evolution of architectural modernism in Texas. Between the 1930s and 1980s, a state known for cowboys and cotton fields rapidly urbanized and became a hub of global trade and a heavyweight in national politics. Relentless ambition and a strong sense of place combined to make Texans particularly receptive to modern architecture’s implication of newness, forward-looking attitude, and capacity to reinterpret historical forms in novel ways. As money and people poured in, architects and their clients used modern buildings to define themselves and the state. Illustrated with stunning photographs by architect Ben Koush, Home, Heat, Money, God analyzes buildings in big cities and small towns by world-famous architects, Texas titans, and lesser-known designers. Architectural historian Kathryn O’Rourke describes the forces that influenced architects as they addressed basic needs—such as staying cool in a warming climate and living in up-to-date housing—and responded to a culture driven by potent religiosity, by the countervailing pressures of pluralism and homogenization, and by the myth of Texan exceptionalism.

Book excerpt: "The idea for this book came about when architectural historian Kathryn O'Rourke and architect / photographer Ben Koush collaborated on a piece on postmodern architecture for Texas Architect. The two enjoyed working together--with O'Rourke writing and Koush providing visuals--and, together with UTP, developed the framework for a similarly rich, book-length treatment of modern architecture in Texas. Conceived to be accessible to a general readership, this project explores in photographs and words approximately fifty years of Texas modern architecture, from the 1930s to the 1980s. As O'Rourke writes, "In this period, modern architecture and Texas grew and changed at an astonishing pace. The state became a significant force in national and international affairs, chiefly as a consequence of the oil industry and the presence of politically powerful Texans in Washington, D.C. Major buildings, many designed by regionally and nationally-prominent architects, followed the money in the state as the influence and image of Texas grew. Relentless ambition, a forward-looking attitude, and a strong sense of place combined to make Texans particularly receptive to modern architecture's implication of newness, its future-oriented image, and its capacity to reinterpret historical forms in novel ways." While many books on Texas architecture focus on one building type (residential architecture, courthouses, and so on), this project adopts a broader lens. A dozen chapters presented under four thematic headings explore buildings through a variety of frameworks--there are the inescapable forces of heat and money, essential functions like caregiving and government, and groupings for leisure and multi-building sites such as museums and campuses. In each of these sections, the authors present a "constellation" of buildings, with one central example and several supporting ones. So, for instance, the "God" chapter presents O'Neil Ford's Little Chapel in the Woods in Denton as its main building, alongside the Antioch Baptist Church in San Antonio and the Congregation Rodef Shalom in Waco. This sort of geographical diversity, with big cities sitting alongside smaller and lesser studied places, runs through the volume as a whole"--

Book God Is in Control of All Things at All Times

Download or read book God Is in Control of All Things at All Times written by Tina Tanner and published by Christian Faith Publishing, Inc.. This book was released on 2020-11-04 with total page 241 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is the story of one person's life; however, in the broader sense, it touches the lives of a multitude of people everywhere It is a story about faith, love, and hope. It's a story first of my faith in God, although a shallow faith at times, stemming from a lack of knowledge and understanding of His word and being raised in an environment that lacked the promotion of God's word as a way of life. Next, the love of God that is never ending, unfailing, consistent, loyal, faithful, and an unconditional love. Finally, hope-a four-letter word that has the supernatural power to transform that which was once dead into life, a beautiful life with a good future. In addition, hope is the push behind perseverance that helps a person achieve success in spite of challenges, great or small. Hope is the propeller that helps to lift a person out of the lowest times in their life and propels them to unimaginable heights. As you read this book, you will see how my life was catapulted into seasons of darkness, yet through that darkness, the light shown greater as it came bursting through the darkness from the power of who is on the inside. "Greater is He that is in you, than he that is in the world" (1 John 4:4, KJV). When you read this book, instead of focusing on the bad events or words of darkness by the evil one that were intended to destroy me, focus on the acts of the Heavenly Father and my beloved Savior Jesus, who lives in my heart, for all of the miraculous things they have done in my life. We may go through bad events in life, but we don't go through them alone, and Jesus won't allow them to destroy us. Scripture tells us in Revelation that we overcome (conquer, prevail, be victorious over), by the blood of Jesus and the word of our testimony (what you witnessed). "And they [God's people] overcame him [Satan] by the blood of the Lamb [Jesus] and by the word of their testimony" (Rev. 12:11, KJV). This book is a testimony that God is in total control of all things and that we are overcomers through Jesus the Christ (the Anointed One). In life, we may face situations that are unbearable, hurtful, sad, or challenging; but we can trust that God will never fail us.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Through the ages up to and including ours, Catholics have witnessed or heard about miraculous events that offer supernatural evidence of God's existence and involvement in our lives. Here is a selection of astonishing true stories that will leave you convinced of the reality of God like never before. This remarkable collation includes the accounts of: Angry 15-year-old Cynthia, who scorns her mother's belief that God will always provide—until she sees an incredible result. (“Thanksgiving Angel”) Dawn, who although not Catholic is asked by her dying son if she too can see “Mary” at his bedside. (“Pretty Lady”) Courtney, in tears and praying in the back seat of her mother's car after it had stalled, watches the impossible as the gas gauge needle suddenly begins moving above E. (“Fueled by Faith”) Terrie, a cash-strapped newlywed who skips a weekly milk purchase only to marvel at how long their one gallon lasts. (“The Milk Jug”) Martha, who after 50 years still feels the flood of God's love for her nine-year-old self, who had asked Him for healing and then looked in the mirror. (“Warts and All”) Romona, who felt a tapping on her shoulder—twice!—before turning and rescuing her brother. (“My Brother's Keeper”) James, a six-year-old whose confidence never wavers, even after losing his trusted knife when fishing. (“The Fish, the Knife, and Saint Jude”) Gene, who works three jobs to care for his family and prays for $311—exactly. (“Ask and You Shall Receive”) The Everyday Catholicism series from Chicken Soup for the Soul and Sophia Institute Press are books not only about “living the Faith,” but also about a Faith that is living. These powerful, uplifting stories show the love of God and His actual presence and engagement in our lives—if only we have the eyes to see! A great gift for Confirmation, RCIA, birthdays, weddings, and holidays.

Book God s Mimic

Download or read book God s Mimic written by Carol Ferguson and published by Trafford Publishing. This book was released on 2005-01-18 with total page 217 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Mommy, the angels are coming for me," toddler Hazel Page cried out as she drifted between life and death, the result of a ruptured appendix. Her parents prayed fervently. "Lord, if you have a plan for Hazel's life, please spare her." "Mommy, the angels have gone away to heaven again." God did have a plan for her life and this was only the first of several encounters Hazel would have with angels throughout her life. Born and raised in Saskatchewan, Hazel attended Saskatoon Bible College and trained as a midwife at Bethany Hospital in Saskatoon. While attending the Summer Institute of Linguistics sponsored by Wycliffe Bible Translators it was revealed to Hazel that she could mimic anything she heard and write it down phonetically. She was God's Mimic. Yes, she did translation work but she also pulled teeth, delivered babies, set broken legs and dug graves. Hazel's missionary career took her to Mexico with Wycliffe, then China and the Philippines with China Inland Mission/Overseas Missionary Fellowship. For many years her home was a thatched hut in a jungle village. Her goal in life was to introduce people to Christ and then put God's Word in their hands so they would know His will. This is the story of a unique woman, sold out to God.

Book excerpt: Join pastor and bestselling author Kyle Idleman as he illustrates a clear path away from the heartache of our twenty-first-century idolatry and back to the heart of God--enabling us to be completely committed followers of Jesus. What do Netflix, our desire for the corner office, and that perfect picture we just posted on Instagram have to do with each other? None of these things are wrong in and of themselves. But when we begin to allow entertainment, success, or social media to control us, we miss out on the joy of God's rule in our hearts. In Gods at War, Idleman helps every believer recognize that there are false gods at war within each of us, and they battle for the place of glory and control in our lives. According to Idleman, idolatry isn't an issue; it is the issue. And he reveals which false gods we are allowing on the throne of our lives by asking insightful questions, including: What do you sacrifice for? What makes you mad? What do you worry about? Whose applause do you long for? We're all wired for worship, but we often end up valuing and honoring the idols of money, sex, food, romance, success, and many others that keep us from the intimate relationship with God that we desire. In this updated and expanded edition of Gods at War, Idleman adds a new introduction as well as new content about the battle many of us face with technology, whether we are tempted to send just one more text, stay online when our bodies need rest, or put email before in-person relationships, teaching us how to seek God with our whole heart instead. Praise for Gods at War: "Today's false gods are more tempting than ever as they promise comfort, wealth, and happiness. Kyle Idleman equips us to kill the deceitful pests that harass our hearts. Get ready for battle." --Mark Batterson, pastor, National Community Church, and bestselling author of The Circle Maker "Don't just read this book--read it now! Kyle's words will dig deep to expose the false gods that drive us away from the real One. In these pages, liberation awaits." --Lee Strobel, bestselling author of The Case for Christ and The Case for Faith
