Book excerpt: With a foreword by Miles Redd, this luxurious decorating resource trains the eye to recognize enduring, quality home goods and to use them to dazzling design effect. Quality matters. Just as a home’s foundation should be built to stand the test of time, so, too, should the furniture, objects, and elements of our rooms speak to an enduring sense of beauty and comfort. They should outlast trends and our loving day-to-day use. But how does one recognize quality and judge whether something is well made? Christiane Lemieux set out to answer this question by interviewing the world’s greatest experts. Weaving together the insights and guidance of dozens of wallpaper and paint specialists, textile fabricators, accessories artisans, and interior designers, Lemieux has curated an unparalleled education in recognizing the hallmarks of timeless, heirloom-quality pieces. Hundreds of elegant home interiors—both iconic examples from the past and stunning residences today--represent the range of luxurious and customized environments that can be created with fine décor.

Book excerpt: Home furnishings retailers who depend on personal selling by their employees for their operating revenue need to influence and control the point of contact with their customers, and the processes that get things sold in their stores. Joe Capillo has spent over 35 years studying the dynamics of retail selling in furniture stores as a sales manager, retail executive, business consultant, and developer of sales training programs. Many readers will know him as a contributing editor of Furniture World magazine where his articles have appeared for over a decade. In this book, retailers in the new competitive reality will learn the best ways to enhance their customers' experience with their stores. Joe Capillo reveals: - Why your entire customer engagement strategy has to be carefully planned and executed - How to control or influence the point of contact with your potential customers - Why retailers have to take a broad, strategic view of the entire selling process and become intimately familiar with all of the available consumer research - How to understand what consumers are thinking and saying about their experiences with our industry - What your customers really want from their store experiences. In this book, Joe takes you through the processes of interpreting research relevant to our industry. In this way, you will learn to develop strategic approaches to serving customers, and use what consumers have told researchers they want from their relationships with our stores. Joe Capillo reveals the view that retailers must have to truly engage consumers and retain them in today's rapidly changing retail world.

Book Sawdust in Your Pockets

Download or read book Sawdust in Your Pockets written by Eric Medlin and published by University of Georgia Press. This book was released on 2023-10-15 with total page 210 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the twentieth century, three industries—tobacco, textiles, and furniture—dominated the economy of North Carolina. The first two are well known and documented, being the subject of numerous books, movies, and articles. In contrast, the furniture industry has been mostly ignored by historians, although, at its height, it was nearly as large and influential as these other two concerns. Furniture companies employed thousands of workers and shaped towns, culture, and local life from Hickory to Goldsboro. Sawdust in Your Pockets: A History of the North Carolina Furniture Industry is the first survey of the state’s furniture industry from its cabinetmaking beginnings to its digital present. Historian Eric Medlin shows how the industry transitioned from high-quality, individual pieces to the affordable, mass-produced furniture of High Point and Thomasville factories in the late nineteenth century. He then traces the rise of the industry to its midcentury peak, when North Carolina became the largest furniture-producing state in the country. Medlin discusses how competition, consolidation, and globalization challenged the furniture industry in the late twentieth century and how its businesses, workers, and professionals have adapted and evolved to this day.
