Book Home Arts for Old and Young Classic Reprint

Download or read book Home Arts for Old and Young Classic Reprint written by Mrs. Caroline L. Smith and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-29 with total page 202 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Home Arts for Old and Young The custom of giving presents at Christmas originated in Germany. It was derived from the ancient feast of Sol. The children of many Americans, who remember Christmas, hang up their stockings Christmas Eve, think ing Santa Claus will come in the night and fill them with gifts. Some, to avoid being roused at too early an hour, have taken a large bag, as a receptacle for pres ents, and the father or mother of the family in due time distribute the presents. Others have had a table spread with their gifts of love, or place their gifts carefully under the breakfast plates, or on the chairs at the table. But the German custom of Christmas trees is by far the most desirable. We wish it was universal here. The writer of this assisted in preparing almost the first tree in our portion of New England, but since then the Christ mas tree has spread far and wide a tree more productive of pleasure and fun was never before planted. Book Why We Make Things and Why it Matters

Download or read book Why We Make Things and Why it Matters written by Peter Korn and published by Random House. This book was released on 2015-02-05 with total page 192 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Why do we make things? Why do we choose the emotionally and physically demanding work of bringing new objects into the world with creativity and skill? Why does it matter that we make things well? What is the nature of work? And what is the nature of a good life? This January, whether you're honing your craft or turning your hand to a new skill, discover the true value in what it means to be a craftsman in a mass-produced world. Part memoir, part polemic, part philosophical reflection, this is a book about the process of creation. For woodworker Peter Korn, the challenging work of bringing something new and meaningful into the world through one's own efforts is exactly what generates authenticity, meaning, and fulfilment, for which many of us yearn. This is not a 'how-to' book in any sense, Korn wants to get at the 'why' of craft in particular, and the satisfaction of creative work in general, to understand its essential nature. How does the making of objects shape our identities? How do the products of creative work inform society? In short, what does the process of making things reveal to us about ourselves? Korn draws on four decades of hands-on experience to answer these questions eloquently in this heartfelt, personal and revealing book. 'If you are in the building trade or just love creating things as a hobby, you will find this book fascinating' The Sun

Book Chapters in the History of the Arts and Crafts Movement Classic Reprint

Download or read book Chapters in the History of the Arts and Crafts Movement Classic Reprint written by Oscar Lovell Triggs and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-23 with total page 216 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Chapters in the History of the Arts and Crafts Movement The primary motive of the arts and crafts movement is, as the name implies, the association of art and labor. Initially an English movement, it has been slowly emerging from the general in dustrial field for about forty years, though its difi'erentiation into a distinct phase of industrialism belongs to the last ten years. I count 1860 as the approximate year of its beginning, vvhen William Morris built his famous Red House on the out skirts Of London, and served his apprenticeship to the industrial arts by designing and executing the decoration and furniture of his home. On its theoretical side the movement is, of course, much older than forty years, its development as an idea being measured by the lives of Carlyle, Ruskin, and Morris. Book Handicraft for Handy Girls

Download or read book Handicraft for Handy Girls written by Albert Neely Hall and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-09-13 with total page 494 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Handicraft for Handy Girls: Practical Plans for Work and Play IT is a mistaken idea that girls cannot drive a nail straight. I have seen a girl drive home a nail as expertly as any mechanic can, and the success with which girls are competing with boys in some of our manual-training schools is proof enough that with practical application and proper guidance any girl can become efficient in wood-working. The main reason for a girl's not succeeding in driving nails straight is lack of confidence, the result of having failed in her first attempts and, possibly, having pounded her fingers. Just as long as this distrust of one's self exists will the nails drive crooked, bend over, and fingers be mashed. The difficulty will be entirely eliminated if these simple directions are followed. Book Toy Making in School and Home Classic Reprint

Download or read book Toy Making in School and Home Classic Reprint written by Ruby Kathleen Polkinghorne and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-12-21 with total page 299 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Toy-Making in School and Home The girl takes pains to carry out her work (neatness is often the sole aim put before her), the boy finds methods. The girl hovers round the well-known place, the boy makes a bee-line to fresh fields. See how this affects reading: the girl still hankers after What K aty Did, What Katy Did Newt, while the boy of her age is reading Jules Verne or Ballantyne or Henty, or if there is open access to shelves in the Free Library near him, you see him finding books on Airships, Submarines, Carpentry, or Engineering. We started our voluntary classes with these ideas in mind, and at first allowed girls to choose an indoor occupation in the two winter terms instead of outdoor games. Many girls preferred games, but others chose Art or First Aid or Cookery or Handwork or Needlework. They had to work at least a term at the chosen occupation. We felt that the girls gained great benefit from the hobbies, not only in the additional happiness of working at what they enjoyed, but in an increase of freshness of mind for other work. This year we have gone still farther and have given each girl one period of voluntary work in addition to a whole afternoon for games or gardening; moreover, the four lowest forms have each one period of class work in toy-making yet even now the children say that the time is too Short. It is really amusing to see a change of classes in the woodwork-room the first class dare not and cannot stay a minute after the bell has rung, for the second class is in and already at work.
